LW should connect automatically at startup, or you can choose "Connect" from the File Menu.

Do you usually connect to the internet with a router? cable? modem?

Maybe.
Sometimes it is easy--just be patient, turn everything off for 10 minutes (including the cable), try again and share more files. Look at Connections Pane to see what is happening.

If there is a problem, can you give more details like:

LW Pro 3.5.1 Beta (English installer)
iBook G3 384MB ram OS 10.2.6 (updates installed System Preferences->Software Update)
sharing 866 files from home
firewall allows Gnutella/LW (6346) in System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall->New
LinkSys router (firmware updated, port forwarding enabled)
ISP allows gnutella on port 6346.
Other internet apps like Safari and Mail connect fine.

Cheers
