Just downloaded Lime Wire basic, but can't search/connect. Did I miss a step?

Are you firewalled or within a LAN?

I have a an ethernet connection, windows xp, I believe it is a LAN

Your LAN server/ISP (whatever you want ot call it) might block Gnutella or fileshareing.
