AOL upgrade causing connection problems? Of the people having connection problems, how many have recently upgraded to AOL 9.0? There is a McAfee firewall or something in there that might be blocking incoming and outgoing connections. Many other connection problems have been traced to other firewalls. Thanks -greg |
You may want to "stick" this. I know that there are a lot of AOL users (I feel sorry for them all) that use LW. Keep up the good work! deepblue |
AOL 9.0 offers you the option using the firewall in 9.0 You can view your settings by clicking "view safety status" from the sign on screen. I do not use their optional firewall and Limewire is running fine alongside of AOL 9.0. I think I have had every beta version of AOL 9.0 installed over the past few months without any issues. I do use a router and Norton Internet Security without a hitch. I don't recommend you go without any firewall but I do think AOL's firewall (powered by McAfee) is better left off. AOL 9.0 is trying to do too many things without doing much of it well and often without the user having the option of choosing. |
Connection Problem No Longer for Me I appear to have solved my problem of discontinued connection by placing a short cut on the desk top to link with the ISP without using Internet Explorer. I open the connection to the ISP then open LimeWire having little else in the way of programs open. It works for me simple yes/dangerous l hope not but l do hope this simple solution works for you and others. Barynz |
What do you mean by link to the ISP? This could be useful for others. Thanks -greg |
Barynz, I don't understand what you mean. If you are using AOL you are not using Internet Explorer. If IE is causing your problem it is probably Java related not AOL related. Norm |
Perhaps l have misunderstood the discussion? I found l could after installing the programs necessary connect to LimeWire. The next time l started the computer it was dead. No amount of patients and clicking 'Connect' achieved anything. I altered firewall settings and went through all the suggested technicalities to no avail. If l uninstalled LimeWire and all associated programmes - repaired registries and loaded old settings (WinXP), l could re-install and gain access but again next time there was no connecting to LimeWire. I did this four times. I then went to "Network Connections" in the Control Panel Copied a ShortCut of the "Dial Up Connection" to the Desktop I now connect to the Internet through this Shortcut and once connected l open LimeWire.= Connection. If l have anyother internet programs open or, open any other programs ie Outlook then, l again have problems. I also 'Sign Out' and close down 'Windows Messenger'. Please accept my apologies should l have missed the point, l tried just about everything to make it work and thought l would share a find that somehow or other has helped me. I trust l have not interupted a "flow" here...................Regards Barynz |
Barynz, I was not trying to be critical. You solved your problem and I wanted to be sure we understood what you did for the benefit of all. I better understand now how you are operating. I am glad your system is working. Norm |
No offence Meant - no offence taken I wish you all the best of luck in solving your problems Barynz |
Thats so funny, It's funny you say that. I upgraded to AOL 9.0 not long ago and suddenly I can not connect or have a very week connection to Limewire Pro 3.8.9. If you figure out the problem I would love to here it. |
Spring I found that when I installed AOL 9.0s "port magic" it absolutely destroyed my internet speed. It dropped by over 30%. AOL includes a lot of "options" like "connectivity service", spyware protection", etc, etc. I would recommend you avoid them. I think they are well intentioned additions that do not fit todays needs for any one person. They try to be all things to all people and they fill the needs of no one. I hesitate to tell you to use the add/remove option to take the extras away bacause that may cause problems. If you have XP use system restore to roll back to a point before you installed 9.0. Then reinstall 9.0 and say "no" to the extras. Norm |
Your right Norm. 9.0 has all kinds of crap om it. I too now have a very slow connecton. Thanks for the tips. I'll try that. |
AOL9.0 TO AOL 8.0 Is it possible when upgrading to AOL 9.0 to reject some of the options, mentioned earlier, in an attempt to resolve a few problems? When i have updated in the past i do not recall there being any options and the installation of AOL 9.0 was completely automated. Maybe i missed something please let me know. |
TS950SDX, No, AOL doesn't give you many options on installation so the extra junk will wind up on your system but I uninstalled Port Magic, AOL Coach, AOL Connectivity Services, AOL Spyware Protection, AOL Toolbar and AOL Dialer after I loaded 9.0 If you are running Windows you can also run MSCONFIG, go to the "Start Up" tab and stop a lot of AOL extras from running when you start your computer. Norm |
I can't connect I downloaded Limewire yesterday-and was connected initially & now I cannot connect. I am running AOL 9.0. Please help. I am not really technically savvy & don't know how to diable the AOL firewall-I wasn't even aware I was running one. |
lk204, It may not be AOL causing your problem. I assume you have tried to connect to Limewire with AOL shut down. What operating system are you running. Do you have a firewall? When you open the AOL sign on screen does it say "Firewall Detected" and does it say "AOL Spyware Protection Running"? Norm |
hi i was just wondering if you could help me with my limewire connection.I have aol 9.0.Evertime i go to connect to limewire my aol connection dissconects and then limewire comes up error there may be a firewall or you do not have a internet connection.I have checked my firewall and limewire is enabled to have full access to the internet.Could u possibly tell me what is going wrong.Email me on [EDIT] or reply if you can answer my qeury. thankyou |
hi i have tried to connect to limewire but evertime time i go to connect my aol 9.0 dissconnects.Could u possibly tell me what is wrong.I have mcafee firewall but limewire is enable and java is to.Email me back on [EDIT] thank you |
Ok here's my problem... I use AOL 9.0 Optimized SE, it says no firewall detected on the start up screen. I connect to LimeWire, but can't keep a connection? What is goin on, it might stay at TurboCharged for a min, or two before it goes to "connecting" causing a HUGE PITA to me when trying to download files. Anyone know what to do? Feel free to email me at **** , or IM me on that name or AIM at MxRacer476. Hopefully someone can help me out!!! email addresses, names, etc are not to be posted on this forum |
I'm still a bit lost... As I understand, the most reccomended way to get around AoL's useless-ness is to uninstall v9.0 and reinstal v8.0 or re-install v9.0 and make sure you don't agree to the little extras, or something like that? Is there not a way to disable them without unistalling and reinstalling AoL - it seems like a hell of a palava! |
connection problems I to have aol 9 and canot connect to lime wire why is this ? |
my limewire shuts down completely.. my computer restarts every time i connect to limewire. can someone help me with this? i hate it when im downloading a song at 4kbs and my comp shutz down//// (it takes 30 minz for me to get a track anyway) |
Error Msg - Port 6346 Blocked by Firewall/Filtering Software I have continued to receive the following msg: "LimeWire is unable to connect to hosts on the Gnutella network. This is mostly due to firewalls where content/filtering software blocking access to Gnutella (port 6346). Please review your firewall's options to allow LimeWire to access the Gnutella network, or speak to your system administrator or ISP to determine if Gnutella traffic is being filtered." All I could think is that it was due to AOL, because we didn't begin to have the problem until installing the 9.0 version with security features. Is there a way to disable this firewall or fix the settings to enable this port? I spoke to an AOL rep. today, and he said I had two versions on the system: 9.0a and 9.0b He told me to get rid of 9.0a, and that I would not have any more problems supposedly. I'm thinking this is the problem, but there could be another solution. If you have received this msg and happen to know, pls contact me at customdesignland@aol.com. Also, is there a way to set up LimeWire to use another port that may also fix this problem? In addition, I have a Windows XP firewall, and there's no disconnecting that, because, for some reason, I cannot get it to activate anyway. Plus, the only other firewall I have is through Norton, and we right-click and disable Norton when we are on LimeWire -- which, although not the safest bet, is the best way to fix the problem for that area. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. |
Firewall! All i can say to you people is check for firewalls. Now days computers are so hopped up with protection they're full of troublesome features and programs you probably dont know are running. As Norm mentioned earlier check out if it's AOL's firewall, it its not check for any programs you may be running. Norton internet security should definitely be checked. Its a program that kind of flies under the radar, its rather low key and almost hides and does its job. If that firewall is off, check windows. Click on Start --> Control Pannel --> Network Connections, then look along the sidebar for "Change Windows Firewall settings" Thats all i've got, I'm no expert but I had the same problem. I know how frustrating it is. Now i also have a bit of a problem. Anyone who has aol can relate to the frustration of downloading at 5 kbps (on a good day). I like to leave my internet on overnight to download while I sleep but occasionaly when i wake up i find my downloads have stopped and im not connected. The little box pops up that says LW does not detect a connection yet AOL is still up and running fine. If anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it Timmy |
I am currently running AOL 9.0 dial-up on Windows 2000 professional. The problem I have is that when I connect to lime wire it will connect and download somewhere around 2kbs (which I credit to dial-up) but then the connection will deteriate until it completely disconnects and I have to restart to get it connected again. I do not have a firewall and the only virus program I am running it AVG free version. I am at wits end. It has probably been discussed several times but I haven't found anything that has helped yet. |

I cant connect to lime wire science I got it and I didnt know aol had to do anything about it can you guys tell me what I could do to connect thanks |
um...i have AOL 8.0 (i'm kinda "old fashioned" like that) and i can't connect at all. the thing always says "quality: connecting" HELP!! |
AOL9.0 WORKS WID ME Sup ppl im a newbie here. im using AOL 9.0 BROADBAND running on Windows XP and my limewire is working perfectly no connection problems wot so eva n if it helps im usin NORTON FIREWALL not McaFee i permitted my firewall to access Limewire so yeh i think its sum thing to do wid dat |
So what now? Okay, so none of these threads are really making sense to me.... So we have established that there is a problem with AOL 9.0 but what steps must be taken from here on out for 9.0 users? I am an AOL 9.0 user and cannot get passed the "Enabling" step and be connected. It sucks and Im completely frustrated. Please, if anyone has any solutions... Im not an internet wiz, so please be clear on instructions. Itd be greatly appreciated. My personal email and the quickest way to reach me is bellamisah@aol.com Thanks! Amy |
ok so why does it work for me strange heres what i did: i permitted my Norton Firewall to let limewire connect. disabled my windows firewall. upgraded my java software (www.java.com). it could be the Mcaffe firewall that u get with AOL 9.0 maybe its blocking it. AOL spyware blocks Limewire so dont block it. Or in the end of the day im just lucky lol |
Hi there. So, I feel dorky saying this but you really need to walk me through this. How do you permit Norton to let LW connect? What special steps do you take there? How do you disable firewall? Can you enable it again later? If its disabled, are you gonna get popups and spyware and viruses and all that crap? You said AOL Spyware blocks LW so dont block it. But how do you UNblock it?? Sorry for all the questions but Im trying so hard to make this work! Thanks for your reply and help! Amy |
For Norton see * Configuring Norton Internet Security To disable Windows XP firewall, go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box. Yes Norton & XP firewall "will" conflict with each other. So it's best to only use one & Norton is a much better firewall. *** I'll leave the AOL questions up to others such as Killa-Mas *627* BTW other tools you should have around other than your firewall are a good antivirus with up to date definitions. And also these utilities: 1. ad-ware (FREE), & also 2. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE). You might also consider 3. Peerguardian (FREE) which helps block out known organisations from checking your computer. Another tip, stay away from files less than 1 MB or 1,000 KB if possible. See WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! |
Hmmm... Okay so I went to the control panel.... no link that says Windows Firewall. Maybe I have to navigate?? Which I did.... Still cant find a way to disable it.... But I did go to control panel-- network and internet connections -- network connections -- and then looked at the connection i run off of and noticed how it said next to it (not in hyperlink though) that it was firewalled. Thats all I know.... Amy |
Hi all i been with AOL 4 years with no probs , even had aol 9 for ages and i been downloading all my lost,dh, smallville, prison break, and loads more, no hassel i was watchin a season a night of these episodes. UNTILL. I WENT FROM AOL GOLD TO PLATNUIM WITH A SPEEDTOUCH ROUTER. then i started gettin the same as most peeps on here . aol conects says its strong. then the speed drops to 0kbs and im all of a sudden conecting again as soon as the d/load gets going same thing happens over and over again. then L/wire started opening by it self EVEN WITH ALL OPS TURNED OFF THEN I NOTICED THAT INSTEAD OF SHARING THE 359 FILES I SHARE IM NOW SHARING 77789 MY WHOLE FOLDER WITH COMPLETE AT THE END. i removed it and next time i signed on im L/wire starts up and again is sharing my all even my firewall was showing as not their. If I may put my 2 cents in... I have used AOL for many years and yes I have had many problems with them from time to time. The current connection problems described here can be traced to the latest ACS update which everyone probably allowed to be installed simply because there was no option to NOT install it. I did it and should have known better lol The AOL dialler allows access to your DSL connection without starting your AOL software and is a major pain when not working as happened to me. After much complaining to the techies without any useful help ( I am certain that they are aware that their update is causing absolute mayhem with their customers) I had to come up with my own non-techie way to deal with it. 1. Uninstall everything including coach and ACS (sorry about this but do not keep your settings etc) no need to do anything to your modem / router 2. Install Aol 9 and connect in usual way and allow to update (think its 5 or 6 times before all updates done) 3 DO NOT ALLOW aol to update the Dialler, as there is no option to cancel installation you will have to press ctrl+alt+del and select processes tab and stop AOLacsd.exe I know that sounds crazy but bear with me 4. Reboot and this time open the dialler setup screen save login and PW and set to run on startup, I know it works because i am using it right now..... and so-far even when exiting aol it doesn't try and install the update again. I really hope this helps with your connection probs guys!!! |
PS..... was reading my own post....... as you do lol and just wondered if there is a tech guy out there that could maybe have a less "bull in china shop" fix for this issue :) personally i am very happy with my fix |
Request for Joe3211979 about the SpeedTouch 585v6 Quote:
Sorry I could not answer you request before but I have not been feeling too well over the past couple of days. Anyway, I must first say that I am not an AOL user but have a friend who is, and he uses a BT Voyager 190 ADSL Modem which was supplied to him by AOL. Secondly, have you initiated UPnP on in Limewire and on your modem? Next, have you initiated UPnP and IDCG in your WinXP? If the above doesn't help then try this solution put forward by sr1darkstar http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post291372 Hope this helps. UK Bob |
WARNING AOL USERS The ACS Update is flawed DO NOT LET IT INSTALL....... Hi Guys I have an update on my fix for you. It appears that every so often the ACS will try to upgrade. I cannot believe AOL still pushing this out .... however because the dialler is automatically connecting at start up (see previous post) and you DO NOT want to press that yes button :) the solution is simplicity itself. Shutdown or restart whichever suits your purpose in quitting Aol Dialler. My connection is very stable........ and yes........ the fix is a tiny bit of a pain...... but hey at least you can get a stable connection without having to use the AOL software. Happy connecting guys. |
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE **************** The fix i posted here for AOL users is no longer required .... Why u ask? Aol seem to have come up with a fix of their own LOL ( about time too ) Here is the process needed. 1 allow the update 2 start and close your aol software a couple of times and a new update will appear 3 set up your dialler as normal ( login and password and set to auto sign in option ) I have used AOL for years and this is a fine example of ........ getting there in the end. Good luck to all |
Connection problems continue Up until about 1 week ago I had no problem connecting to Limewire...now it just won't. I took the 'test' you suggest and it worked. I've made sure ZoneAlarm firewall (which I've had for ages) allows LM. I'm on AOL 9.0 but have been for ages and it always worked. I have the latest Java. I don't have 'bricks' around the globe and I have the LM in the system tray at bottom. What now? I use Windows XP and don't share my computer. I have Broadband, not WiFi. Nothing has changed since the last time LM worked. (any help would be great) |
Hello Rose You don't say whether you can connect to the internet or just that limewire will not connect. If it is the the internet then use the AOl dialler "one click fixes" I would suggest you repair your ACS ( it's on the list ) if that doesn't work then use the RE-BUILD ADAPTER/ACS I note your using Zone Alarm.... whilst this is a excellent product , it has been known to cause issues with connectivity and AOL 9.0. If you are an AOL consumer you can get a free copy of mcafee's firewall which to date i have had no issues with. The other possibility is that anti-P2P companies are flooding your computer with connection attempts. The only defense I have used and know of is PEERGUARDIAN which you run and update before using LW. I will let you do your own research on that one.... there are others more knowledgable than me about such things. Best of luck to you..... hope i have at least put you in the right direction. |
Connection Problems Thanks for your quick reply. I have no problems connecting to the internet and am always connected before trying to connect LM. Don't know what P2-Ps are but have downloaded and installed PeerGuardian as you suggested - I hope it runs itself as I have no idea if I am meant to do anything with it. After 30 mins LM still not connected. Connection Status = Leaf When I put in a search message reads: LM trying to connect. It recognises that I am looking for something as it registers the request at top of page - it just won't connect to network. Has anyone any advice please? (and also if I close the PeerGuardian programme will it run in the background?) Thanks |
Hi Rose peerguardian prevents snooping on your PC by blocking known hackers and anti p2p companies. read the instructions with peerguardian, let it update, especially the P2P list once the program is running it will only block "bad" IP's known to cause problems for music/ file sharing programs. The default for the program is that when you close the main screen of peerguardian it will minimise to your system tray..... you should be able to see it there (running in background) you may also want to consider re-installing LW as that process may fix your connection issue if your problem is related to open ports etc. |
