search does not work anymore

Hi there
sorry I can't help as I experience the same/similar problem.

I am running Limewire on a Mac G4 notebook, with OSX 10.2.8 and connected to the internet through a wireless Airmac/Airport system.
I bought Limewire about 5 days ago, run the system alright for 3 days and since yesterday (without having changed any set up) I could not execute any AUDIO searches anymore. I click the search button and nothing moves. I then changed the search to a "Any Type" search and got at least the Limewire button to turn again (although without any search results coming through).

I must be connected alright as I can see under "Connections" about constantly 6 hosts (although I don't really know what they/these are).

I also deleted the preference directory as was suggested on other problems but this did not help.
I finally deleted Limewire software off my system and reloaded the software from scratch - no change.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

stief March 26th, 2004 03:02 PM

this is a long shot-- search your hard drive for any file called "xerces"

If so, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24655

if not, see if this thread applies http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24539

thomas-- the thorough info is a great help. Apple posted about an airport problem with AOL yesterday: even though it's about Panther, the tips about resetting an airport modem might be useful http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107797

Hi Stief
thanks for the suggestions so far - I followed the entire exchange of comments with Ebene1073 – but it seems it does not resolve my own problem.
I also managed to download the picture MagBay.jpg as suggested and this worked alright.

I forget to mention that I am usin LimeWire Pro 3.8.7

I actually did not mention that I had some problems with the Airport system last week as it suddenly cut me out and I could not access the internet anymore– I had to reinstall the Airport software and had to fiddle around until it worked again. I am not sure on the timing but it could be that LIMEWIRE did not work anymore after I reinstalled the Airport software once more.

Further Information
- When I perform a search, the LIMEWIRE icon on the right hand top corner starts to turn on all searches except for AUDIO and VIDEO
- The searches are running through (the search colum in the header starts to fill with blue colour until the end) but no results appear at all

Furthermore, changes which I observed, between BEFORE (search was working ok) and AFTER (does not work anymore) are as follow:
- the Monitor page shows no incoming searches at all anymore (although I ticked the enable button) - before this worked alright and showed a lot of searches going on
- the upload section (of Monitor) did not show any uploads before nor does it now (i.e. I assume that either nobody likes my songs – I offer about 2062 songs – or that they are not able to access my database somehow)

I also ensured that I ticked the Gnutella/Limwire (6346) button on the Firewall page (Sharing).

I fear I am running out of options here.

I try to attach some files showing the status ot LimeWire and the Terminal command which I executed.

Hope this helps.

Hi Thomas--sorry for the delay in responding. Don't worry about the lack of incoming searches: the warning message would have probably said something like "You are a shielded leaf and will not see many replies." This is normal at first, but none for a long time is not.

What we were trying to do with ebene last week was to see if anything could show on his Search Pane. Were you able to use "Browse Host" when clicking on the MagBay as it was downloading? That should have caused your LW to list the files on your Search Pane.

Could you email me a screen shot of your Search Pane? (it's much easier than pasting screen shots here, and keeps this thread shorter).

You know that as a Pro Supporter you are entitled to free Pro Support from LW, right? I'm just another user like yourself, but there are other who are experts who are reading this too, so if you want to keep on trying here, that's fine by me.

cheers

thomasthebeliever March 26th, 2004 07:37 PM

I tried to click on the Browse Host button but couldn't actually access it - all buttons remained blacked out - i.e. not accessible

I will forward the search screen shortly by email.

No, I was not aware that I could get any support outside this forum. Not so easy to get around the LimeWire homepage - or at least I am not that experienced...

the sreenshots are therefore complete (all taken at the same time)

stief March 26th, 2004 07:47 PM

OK--everything looks normal there. Would yo click on the "Any Type" button, then type "Limewire" into the search box and hit return? That should give you 1000's of hits very quickly.

stief March 26th, 2004 07:52 PM

here's the Pro support link http://www.limewire.com/english/content/proform.shtml

thomasthebeliever March 26th, 2004 07:53 PM

did so, entered Limewire but nothing happend at all - apart from the folder name which shows in the header (X Limewire) which turns slowly slowly blue...
but no search result as such

stief March 26th, 2004 08:07 PM

Bizarre! Some part of java just won't display the screen results.

Hmmm--try changing the theme: Go to View->Apply Themes and choose, say, the LimeWire Pro theme. Repeat the search and see if a new theme will allow results to show.

thomasthebeliever March 26th, 2004 08:19 PM

tried this before and just did it again - no change at all
again, any search carried out on Video and AUDIO do not even start (Limewire button does not start to turn nor does the search name appear in the header) while all other searches start - without finding any documents

I passed this problem as you suggested to the Limewire support - lets see if they can help me in anyway.

Thanks a lot for your help - it is very much appreciated.

stief March 26th, 2004 08:25 PM

Good luck. Do post back with what you find. A friend looked this over who knows java and told me he had never heard of a connected client not able to display results.

btw--someone downloaded the magbay link again, and I showed an uploader who is still firewalled (browse button greyed out).

Cheers.

thomasthebeliever March 26th, 2004 08:30 PM

will do so as suggested - by the way, how can I ensure that I am not firewalled?
I went into sharing and it says "Firewall off" (it shows a Start button which I understand woudl start the firewall).
Anywhere else I need to look?

Cheers and then goodbye for now - my family is calling...

stief March 26th, 2004 08:45 PM

The airport base station settings would probably have something to open and block ports, but I've never configured one. Port 6346 should be "forwarded" i.e., to allow messages from outside to pass through the station to your computer. They are probably being blocked. You could scroll through the LimeWire Preferences->Bug Reports->View Example to find the line that says "Received incoming this session: true" (yours will show "false" if incoming connections are blocked).

Well late here too. Cheers

thomasthebeliever March 27th, 2004 05:08 AM

here the full text found in the bug report:
as you mentioned, the "received incoming this session was false" - whatever this means - you mentioned it should be "true", hence would you know what I need to change?

Received incoming this session: false
means that other computers have not been able to connect to you on port 6346. You can call out (you are connected)--they can't call in.

The fix is to open the firewall (done) AND set up the Airport base station which routes all calls to the appropriate machine (it's like a second firewall).

I'd guess you need to Configure the AirPort Admin Utility (found in the Utilities folder, right?)

jum March 27th, 2004 07:00 AM

I have found the Apple Airport base station to be unstable under high load. See my comment at the following thread:

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=23445

Check if power cycling your airport makes a difference.

Hi there

the problem persists.
I now disconnected the AIRMAC and went straight into the internet (conntected by cable)– no change at all. The search
still does not get me anywhere.
What I don't understand is on how the firewall could be turned off.

I ticked the firewall button off (system preferences - sharing - firewall), hence it is off – but I was told there is a 2nd firewall installed but I have no idea on how to get rid of this barrier.

I am starting to think that I have ticked somewhere some button which I should not have... and that it can be resolved easily.

Wow, I thought this whole file sharing was a rather straightforward thing - anyone some experiences with other/better providers than Limewire?

here also the network setup

stief March 27th, 2004 08:16 PM

thomas--plugging the cablemodem directly into the ethernet port was a good way to isolate the search problems from airport problems. jum's experience with network problems is extensive--he was the one who solved a problem I'd had for months (turned out to be my ISP). FWIW, I tried every p2p app I could until jum figured out what was going on, but experience proved LW, its developers and users were the best for the Mac, especially when there were problems. YMMV. If you were able to connect directly with the firewall turned off and still showed no incoming connections after 15 minutes, there really is something wrong.

Did you see the note about the other program that was disrupting java? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24778 You already tested for the xerces file, I recall, but the link might give you more hints. Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

thomasthebeliever March 27th, 2004 10:27 PM

I actually found a file called xerceslmpl.jar in a java directory - so I thought that was what you refered to.

Power cycling - what is this and how do I do this - no idea, sorry, I am not a technical guy.

cheers to all of you who tried to help - I think I will wait now for the reply from LW - thanks a lot for your valuable time.

that's the cause of the search problem. see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24778

Morning Stief

I saw that that recommendations was from 2002, hence I thought they have in the meantime corrected the problem.

Do you know what uninstalling the XSLTFOEngine will actually do? I.e. will I affect other programs, such as iPhoto?

Thanks

stief March 28th, 2004 04:38 PM

evening thomas (GMT-6 here).
Maybe Jens or Sam or Roger could tell you. I've never tried scruffyware. You could just move it to the trash and try, and move it back if you didn't like what you found, no?

btw--sounds like some interesting products (despite this conflict). Once they fix the problem I'll be interested in adding the extra iPhoto capabilities, or do you think messing with iPhoto too big a risk?

thomasthebeliever March 31st, 2004 05:24 AM

Just to report that I got the feedback from LimeWire support - the suggested to do the following which WORKED !!!
-Delete all versions of LimeWire.
-Delete all LimeWire aliases and installers from your desktop and Dock.
-Reboot your computer.
-Download the OS X installer, using the download link that was emailed
to you on the date of your purchase.
-Reinstall LimeWire Pro.

So, after trying it the hard way, I simply got rid of all related files and downloaded the LW software once more and it works again - this time I can even see that other users have access to my database and download files.

Many thanks again for your help and time. Cheers and goodbye (for now) - hope it will work longer than 3 days this time around.

Tom

jum March 31st, 2004 05:43 AM

This is due to the newer builds containing a hack to ignore the additionally installed xerces parsers and use just the one included in the LimeWire package. It may need to be revised if Apple updates its Java package, but by then the third party application installer probably has fixed his package so the duplicate xerces libraries do not happen any more.
