Angry Am I ignorant or unlucky?

I have been through these forums tryinfig to find a fix for limewire but I still keep getting "LimeWire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire.". I have done the enabling of Gnutella ports on the control panel. And I have disabled Windows firewall, I have Norton internetworm protection on and I checked to make sure that javaw was on the "Permit All" list and it was. I have no Idea of what other direction to work in. Everytime I try to load LimeWire a prompt comes up from Norton Internet Worm Protection stating the it has detected a remote system trying to access my computer. It asks me if I want to permit it to allow access to the internet even though I click ok to permit I still get the same messege.

I have:
LIMEWIRE BASIC v 4.9.30
Microsoft Windows XP Home 2002sp2 (came with the system hate it)
Intel P4 1.8ghz
256RAM
Motorola Cable modem Comcast Broadband
Norton Anti Virus w/ InternetWorm Protection
I have disabled Windows Firewall
I share no connections
My test did work
I can't do the true false test LimeWire won't open
I also have good speed on my tests
I have also deleted my preferences.

Thanks,
~j

Default Looked through and tried suggestions

I've been working at fixing Limewire all day. My problem seems a little different than some others. I was downloading just fine. I had downloaded at least 6 music files. I can open the program just fine and even execute searches. The problem is when I click download (with 100+ sources) it never downloads...just sits down in the download area "connecting" never getting past 0% then finally times out saying "need more sources".

i answered these questions...

My Norton Fire wall is set up to allow LW full acess. My XP firewall is disabled. I even had both disabled for a short time but nothing changed

I did the test and got the message " Your Test Worked"

Downloaded event patch 4226

Speed test - download: 37kbps / upload: 114kbps

I deleted the preferences file too...no help.

The Bug Report (Received Incoming this session) says TRUE.

Please give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? win xp 2002 w/sp2
2. What firewalls you have? Windows (disabled) Norton (made sure it allows limewire)
3. How much ram? - 2.69 GHz, 504 MB of RAM
4. Hard Disk space available? 13GB
5. Connection type? Dial up
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Lucent Win Modem, 3/31/2003, vers: 8.28.0.0
7. Where are you trying to connect from? home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire:4.12.6, Java: 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your isp provider? highland communications, small, local telephone provider in KY/TN...part of the larger InfoAve.net

Sounds like yours isn't a connection problem, rather a fake file problem
There are fakes throughout the network now which will be stuck connecting for ages & go straight to 'need more sources'...these things won't ever download!!
Search again, vary your search terms (for music files, look for artist or album rather than song title). Also try the All Types search. Stay away from files with a huge number of sources. Go for a file with 10 sources or less & those with a modem source. If you're searching for new releases/really popular files, you're more likely to see fakes than if you're looking for older or rarer stuff.

Look through these couple of threads for more info
Info about fake files
How to find music

The same thing can happen when downloading video files. Always look up a file with Bitzi before download. A file with heaps of sources but no Bitzi rating is often a fake
How to use Bitzi

Hey There,

I've got an almost identical setup to you, Johnny Sixpack (except I have PC-cillin, not Norton). Like everyone else I've been labouring through all the posts trying pretty much everything on this thread without much luck until I tried something someone mentioned somewhere back there (sorry, I can't credit whoever it was!)!!!

I changed the port # in Tools - Options - Advanced - Firewall to 44093 (seemed like a nice enough number), hit connect, and lo & behold, I've been connected for at least 10 minutes now (I think this may be a record!!!).

I don't know if this post is a little premature but hey, it seems to be worth a try.

Good Luck everyone.

-Erica

DOH!!!!

Yep, you guessed it! Disconnected again. I don't know how long it stayed on for this time.
I'm getting pretty tired of having to click on connect again all the time. Doesn't it auto-connect when it gets disconnected? Mine doesn't seem to. It just sits there not connected until I tell it to!

Just a quick question... when setting up your firewall in whatever third party firewall you happen to use (I use PC-cillin) which of the 3 instances of javaw.exe are you supposed to be telling it to exclude. I've got one in c:windows/system32, one in c:windows/system and another one (I can't remember where). Do I need to put in a path to the file or is it enough to just put in the exe file name?

Has ANYONE managed to set up PC-cillin firewall to allow the use of Limewire?

As it is I've turned it off and turned on the Windows XP firewall and set up the exception in that. Although Limewire isn't detecting a firewall like it was with PC-cillin, connecting for more than a few minutes still seems to be a real problem.

Oh, and has ANYONE actually claimed their money-back guarantee? How do I do it if I can't get this fixed?

-Erica

P.S. Here's my system setup:
Intel P4 2Ghz
512Mb RAM
Windows XP (probably with SP2 but haven't kept track)
56k modem connection (yeah I know that's lame!)
My internet server is iinet (in Australia)

Hello

I'm having problems with connecting to lw. it did this kinda thing a while back but I sorted it out (no idea how). this is a new version i'm using.
When i connect it says after a while "your machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a irewall is blocjiking lw from accessing the internet.

i answered these questions...

My Fire wall is set up to allow LW full acess.

I did the test and got the message " Your Test Worked"

Please give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? winxp

2. What firewalls you have? zonealarm

3. How much ram? - 256... maybe or 512..

4. Hard Disk space available? – 11.5GB out of 120gb

5. Connection type? its broadband but it has a router and other people share the internet. Its a 256 connection i think

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? uh..

7. Where are you trying to connect from? home

8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version -LW 4.9.23pro, JAVA 1.5.0.04

9. Who is your isp provider? slingshot i think

anyway, any help will be greatly appreciated. it's getting quite annoying. I tried doing all the other things mentioned in the other posts, such as deleting the preferences.

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure if this is the same problem everybody else is reporting, but like most others, for me this problem has only started occurring since I upgraded to 4.9.30 and 4.9.33. I have:

LimeWire Pro 4.9.33
Microsoft Windows 98 (yeah, I know, I know ...)
A truly ancient Pentium II 350MHz CPU (yeah, I know, I know ...)
128MB RAM
Two hard drives, 6.4GB and 120GB (free space 450MB and 102GB respectively); music is saved to the second drive
Terayon cable modem
Broadband connection via Shaw Cable
No firewall
No shared connections (connecting from home)
My test worked, but was very slow, over a minute
Got true for the true/false test
Have not yet tried deleting my preferences
I am a moderately experienced LimeWire user.

The problem I am experiencing is that LimeWire starts, and once the screen appears, the connection quality logo goes all the way up to "Turbo Charged Connection". However, my searches return few or no results, my monitor shows no uploads at all, and when I look at the "Connections" tab, I find that all five of my connections have only been active for five to twenty seconds, and they are being dropped constantly. It is very rare for any one connection to stay up for more than a minute, and LimeWire is CONSTANTLY trying to make new connections.

Now, I know my computer is very old, but it still WORKS, and I don't have a couple of thousand spare dollars to buy a new one (although I'm working on that!). However, before upgrading to 4.9.30/33, I had LimeWire Pro 4.8.1, and it never had a problem like this. Indeed, the only reason I upgraded was to get rid of that annoying "There's a newer version" message.

1. Is it my computer? Is LimeWire 4.9.x incompatible with Pentium II's or Windows 98?
2. Is it something I've done or failed to do?
3. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem - it starts, but the connection is tenuous at best? What did you do?

Thanks to all.
