new user can't connect - HELP

Hi,
I just downloaded the free version of LW however it won't connect. I disabled the firewall in My Computer/Control Panel however that didn't work. I clicked on the link in ursula's signature about testing Port 6346 and it said that the test page was a success. I'm using windows xp with a modem connection. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!!!!

As and update to my ever-continuing quest to get LW 3.8.10 to work I've tried 2 ideas in other posts. I attempted to delete my user pref folder and restart LW, no luck there. I alsot tried to disable the "Tips" dialog box and disable the auto-connect feature and restart LW, no luck once again. I'm running out of ideas!

It's 56k, in a dorm room. My roommate has LW and he said it just took a day or two for it to start to connect for him. Where is this connections page located?

Ok, I'm watching the connections page while clicking "connect" and nothing is happening at all. That can't be good!

Yep, I click 'connect' and nothing happens on the connections page. Do you think uninstalling and then re-installing might work? I've tried about 4 options from other threads.

Ok, I just found out my roommate has verson 3.8.4 and I've got 3.8.10 so that might also be the problem. I have tried rebooting (no luck there). The firewall is the one that's in the control panel (I'm assuming the one that came with xp because I tried to find any others and that was the only one I found).

He might but how would I get that on my comp (excuse me for the computer ignorance)?

sling April 20th, 2004 09:00 PM

That could work, I'll have to try it if re-installing doesn't work out.

Forgot about that, we've both got msn so I could transfer it that way. Have any other ideas for why it might not connect other than firewalls? Thanks for the tips so far by the way :)

One more thing (another example of computer ignorance coming up), to find the program to have him send over, would I just head to his C:/downloads file and find the limewire installer in there?

sling April 20th, 2004 09:20 PM

Alright, I couldn't remember the file's name. I'll give that a shot as soon as he gets done with his nightly Stronghold 2 playing. But we both use xp and I see no reason why if it's working for him it wouldn't work for me.

sling April 20th, 2004 09:26 PM

Do you do that just to keep things organized?

sling April 20th, 2004 09:36 PM

KaZaa is the reason I switched to LW. Started to seem like popular songs were always messed up. Have you tried both? If so would you say LW is an improvement?

I certainly hope your right. However I'm going to call it a night, hopefully the version my roommate has will work, I think it has a good chance. Thanks again for your help! (of course I'll be posting again tomorrow if it doesn't :) ) good bye
