could not connect router modem etc 2 NAT devices may be complex but I have no idea how to achieve simple. (What does "NAT" mean?) I just follow orders (mfg install guide) and keep my head down and hope. If I can connect with only a router and no modem, umm, doesn;t sound likely but maybe routers do ALL the work. I dunno. If going Modem without router, umm, sure, but then I can't build a network here. Which are you pointing to as simply better? I already did the PORT 6346 and force IP thing. The only magic found has been the member suggestion to edit registry. Can you comment on that while I follow your other lead to static ip methods?:) |
I think et voilą would be best to explain your questions. I'm relatively new at connection issues. I use a mac so registry issues is something I haven't explored. NAT stands for network address translation, a system which lets you share an Internet connection among many computers while allowing for unique IP addresses for each computer. |
cannot connect - a fix! Here is my opinion. You are a closet genius. But that is only my humble opinion. Thank you for your post of 10-19-04 "A FIX". (see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=2) This worked for me using WINXPsp2, Limewire 4.2.3, router, modem, DSL, and the configurations recommended at various Limewire User postings, especially from membername: "Ursula The Cleaning Lady": 3 other most Helpful Links for me in getting connected: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...0&pagenumber=1 http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The most helpful fix-it comes from you: [QUOTE]Originally posted by wired@liquidskies.net After not being able to connect for weeks I began searching my registry for LimeWire. After several mins. of searching I came across this registry key. My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wind ows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache C:\Progra~1\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe Now if you don't know how to edit the registry you SHOULD NOT attempt this as this is the brain of windows and you could destroy your installation. But INSTANTLY after I removed this KEY I was able to Connect at Turbo Charged Status again. Does removing this key have any adverse affects? Or is this the ban by windows mentioned in my last post? Opinions please. =========== So now you have one opinion yes? Any others out there? |
With SP2 there is never one single answer! Different solutions have solved the issue for different people but not for all people. That's why this thread is here & as an open thread for people to add their experiences. There's been a multiple of suggested solutions but whichever you find helps you is the best one for you. lol Different systems & setups vary quite dramatically in quite a surprising way. By the way if you were refering to me, I use mac. I only use windows in a closed environm't. Glad to hear your problems are solved! :) |
Followed instructions as in step 2. When i go back again to check the port, the IP address/name has been changed from 127.0.0.1 to 'dimension'. Is this normal? Still having connectivity problems. |
What a Legend!: It sounds like you have a dynamic ip so your settings may may not stay the same same each time you log on. If you need to foreward a port you need a static ip. Please answer the following details as detailed as you possibly can. Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version, 2. What firewalls you have, 3. ram, 4. HDD space available, 5. Connection type, 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers, 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is. |
Alrite, erm 256 RAM, 576Kbps DSL Broadband, Windows Xp Home (accessing from home), No firewalls, Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed (j'ai think). About 75% of Hard Disk vailible. Yeah.. |

256 MB RAM is not a lot but probably sufficient if you're not running too many apps. |
Where do i find this info? Sorry you're talking to an idiot here. Any help?: Device Name: Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP Device Type: isdn Server Type: PPP Transports: TCP/IP Authentication: MD5 CHAP Compression: none PPP multilink framing: Off |
I am running a laptop with XP Pro SP2, 1G ram, the Windows Firewall, about 20G free space, and an ethernet cable connection at the college apartment complex I am staying at. I have gotten Limewire to work from home, with a DSL connection, but it is no go here. I have completed all the suggestions in the forum, minus the regestry one since I am a noob there. I am guessing that the complex has a firewall set up on their ethernet link, since my friend in another building is having the same problem. I have Azureus running through an obsure nonexistant port (32400) which seems to be working... Any suggestiong on forcing the Limewire port through? |
No connection to any P2P software Hello, I have Windows XP SP2 Symantec Antivirus (work pc), and it's been a while now... i was using Winmx for more than 2 years and all of a sudden i couldn't make a connection. I tried to use other P2P software and i can't connect to any one of them. To be honest i've really done a lot of reading, tried to fix it with port forwarding etc. and still can't connect. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me. Thanks |
Hi, Well, you're using a work computer. At my work, we manage the PCs by restricting what sites they can go to, what files IE can process, and restrict P2P applications because they put your corporate data at risk. It's possible your work has begun doing the same. You could ask your IT department why Limewire no longer works, but this might highlight you using P2P apps on your work computer--a no-no. I could be wrong, but it would explain it stopped wqorking "all of a sudden". Did you change / install anything else in the same time frame? Hope this helps, ZAP |
So far no success with connecting 1 Attachment(s) Hello all. I have attempted all tips and tricks in the thread so far. I installed Zap's recommended patch, deleted the specified registry entries for LimeWire and everything else I've come across. I am using Windows XP SP2, ZoneAlarm's firewall, and LimeWire PRO 4.8.1. I am on a personal computer (not at work) that connects via a switch to a satellite dish (deployed soldier in Iraq). LimeWire at one time functioned properly. I've asked our "network administrator" and he says no changes have been made to our network. There weren't any major installations or updates that I remember around the time LimeWire stopped working other than possibly windowsupdate. As stupid as this makes me sound, it just stopped working. I have tried connecting with LimeWire with ZA turned off. I have added ports in Zone Alarm and XP's fire wall (not being used) for LimeWire and made sure LimeWire was directed through those ports. I have uninstalled and reinstalled LimeWire. I still cannot connect. I am also attaching a screen shot of LimeWire so you can see what the problem looks like. I'm assuming it's what everyone else has been suffering with: LimeWire starts up and attempts to connect to ten servers unsuccessfully over and over again. If you have any more tricks up your sleeve please advise. Thanks for your time. Shaun |
Hello, Thanks for your reply. I have to agree with you. I think they have purposely blocked all connections to P2P software. I'm just wondering :) if there is a way to 'fix' the problem. Agkinara |
I think the latter 2 posters (shaun.warren & Agkinara_13) should maybe look at the Connection Problems section of the forum. Start off with some simple tests: Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? If you can't reach that page then it means your port 6346 is being blocked. This could be due to a firewall, a connection device like a modem/router, or your isp or line managers somewhere along the line. You could try a different port no. & enter it in the Listening port section of the Firewall section of: LW's menu Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls. Mac users will find this under your Preferences tab. Some other ports to try are: 3500, 1203, 20282, 80 (latter as a last resort!) Don't forget to press apply button after making any changes. Go to menu, File>Connect. Another thing you can try is delete your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire (make a note of your settings under Tools>Options before you do this b/c you'll need to reset them next time you open LW!) Let's hope your isp's are not using programs to filter or block p2p sharing or specifically LW. |
