what ever happened to the good old days when i could connect...

i cant connect to limewire, i read and did all the things it says to do with firewalls on the help page but it doesnt work. i read some guys message about deleting the directory but i am pretty computer illiterate so could some one walk me through it? thanks

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2004 05:14 PM

OK LW oprefs for Windows: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
If LW won't connect after that view the 1st few pages & last 2 pages of http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1 & check your results to the incoming test.

By the way keep your questions to one thread only or we'll ignore your threads! See: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/announ...?s=&forumid=29

italionstallion77 November 8th, 2004 05:45 PM

hey sorry, this isprobably a stupid question but what does that mean? the c:..... what do i do with that?

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2004 06:23 PM

If you're a windows user it means your c drive. Which is where most of your goodies are stored. Use your search engine to find .limewire to make it easier for you. Press the Start button at bottom left corner & select Search>Files/Folders & type in .Limewire

italionstallion77 November 8th, 2004 06:57 PM

once i have found the file what do i do?

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 01:42 PM

Delete the .limewire folder. Then open the LW app up again & things should be ok. You will need to reset your options within LW (Tools-Options, etc.)

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 02:46 PM

hey i deleted the folder and restarted my comp, and opened up limewire, but it still wont connect. did i do something wrong?

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 03:02 PM

Leave LW on for several minutes (say about 15-25), then see what it's doing. Go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Bug Report & press the View example button. Follow the instructions on the following link & report back whether your result is True or False. Click this link for sample of what you need to do

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 03:43 PM

its false

OK that's why you can't connect. You will need to do some investigation for me & provide me all the specific details of my questions.
1. What type of modem & router & what's the brand & model no. of them?
2. What Operating System (OS) version do you use?
3. Do you have XP with the Security Patch 2 (SP2)?
4. What firewalls do you have? XP? Norton, McAfee, etc.?

This info is very important for fixing your problem so you must provide me the particular details!

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 05:46 PM

i dont know where to find that stuff, i know i have xp firewall and i have mcafee antivirus but i dont have the mcafee firewall enabled. do you have an AIM screenname?

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 06:08 PM

I don't know what AIM is, lol.
Set your XP firewall up according to this link: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml (McAfee is at the bottom of that page.)
What type of connection do you have & where are you connecting from (home, school, work, etc.)? Your modem is the device that your computer internet connection connects to.

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 06:13 PM

i have already done everything on that page by making my ports right and making gnutella be in my firewall exceptions, and i am connecting from school, auburn alabama, i think it is a dsl connection. thanks for sticking with me cause i want to figure this out.

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 06:20 PM

Whoah! That could be the problem, connecting from school! Many schools block access for p2p use. If you were using your own modem it would be different. One thing you can try is to forward a port. For instructions see: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...233#post106233

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 06:29 PM

i have done what you said to do with the advanced firewall screen, but it still doesnt work. any suggestions?

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 06:33 PM

Do you know any fellow students who it works for. If they also use LW, ask if you can have a copy of their LW Prefs (ie: .limewire folder) & replace yours with theirs. But connecting at a school nowadays, it's a stumbling block for many people! It's only been in recently that schools have been trying to block p2p use.

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 06:42 PM

my room mate has it and he cant connect either, i dont know anyone else who has it. is there any way to get around the school crap? i am trying to connect now and it is just quitting trying and saying disconnected after like 5 secs instead of like 20. i dont know if that means anything but i want my frickin limewire to work you know.

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 06:51 PM

The best I can suggest is to try to get to know the one of the school's computer network people & ask if there's any solution. There might be another port you can try. I can give you a list of ports to try. But you'd need to change the port no.'s in LW's Port & Firewall settings, & also your XP firewall. Alternate Port selection

italionstallion77 November 9th, 2004 07:01 PM

yea could you send me a list of ports to try? and just kind of tell me what to do. you seem to know alot about computers, could you tell me how to keep my computer running fast? i have a dell with 1 gig memory and 2.8ghz. so it is pretty fast i just dont want it to get slow. and you prob know how to do this, i have a wav file of an internet sound i would like to play whenever i get mail, do you know how to set it so when i open msn if i have mail it will play that sound? i have been trying to figure it out for weeks, but i dont know alot about comps.

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 07:30 PM

I use a mac not windows. Although I can run win 2k on my comp, it's very, very slow. So sorry I can't help with the sound. I think somewhere in control panels you can utilise sounds for certain purposes. I did pull apart & rebuild a pc as a part of my studies but can't remember that detail.
The ports are in the link I gave you (just click on the Alternate Port selection link.)

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 07:49 PM

I found this page for XP. Scroll down to Step 7 - Tweaks which can help to speed up your computer: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 06:57 AM

I am having the same problem but i am not at a school i am using my personal computer at my house

Lord of the Rings November 11th, 2004 07:05 AM

Hi interstate102688: Open LW & leave on for several minutes, then see what it's doing. Go to LW's menu Tools-Options & Bug Report & press the View example button. Follow the instructions on the following link & report back whether your result is True or False. Click this link for sample of what you need to do

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 07:12 AM

I've had LW on for about 30Min and It says it's False

Lord of the Rings November 11th, 2004 07:15 AM

My apologies but the answer to this issue is a little technical. You said you are connecting from home. Can you tell me what Firewalls, modem brand & model, & Operating System (OS) version you have.

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 07:19 AM

i have Norton Personal firewall on a windows XP.
Which modem do you need?

Lord of the Rings November 11th, 2004 07:28 AM

lol how many do you have connected to your system? Give us the brand name & model of each device that's connected between your computer & the net.
For your Firewall(s) you'll need to allow LW access thru it so for instructions go to: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml & you'll see a link for Norton at the bottom of the page. Windows XP you'll also need to set it up as the guidelines suggest in order to allow both Java & Limewire (LW) access.

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 07:37 AM

I have a Westell model 327W
I followed all the instructions and both LW and Java are unblocked

Lord of the Rings November 11th, 2004 07:51 AM

Do the sample Bug Report thingy again & tell me if it still says false? Is this the only net device connected?

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 07:51 AM

hey,

interstate102688 November 11th, 2004 07:52 AM

hey,
thanks it works now. quality = exellent
