After troubleshooting- glitches exist Greeting and thanks in advance for your assistance. Starting roughly two weeks ago I have been experiencing connection problems. Like LimeWire suddenly developed a mind of it's own. If it wouldn't connect when I requested, an hour or two it would on it's own (if I left the application open). I am operating Windows XP, using 4.0.5 Pro, DSL connection, and had one error message pop up a few days ago reading "Gnutella network blocked - port 6346 or some similar number combo. I went to the Connection Problem area in the LM site and followed the directions on how to open the port. It worked and the port is open. I can go into the firewall section and see that the port is enabled. However, I still cannot connect. But the is a 50/50 chance it will connect if the application is left open. So here I am at the forum and tried in vain to find and delete the C:/document and settings/your_username/.limewire and I can't find it..... And I just checked the LM connection and it's up, running, and turbocharged. I guess the bottom line is LM will connect when it wants to. Connectint to and surfing the internet is no problem. It is also likely that the problem could be on my end, I have a learing disability when it comes to doing things in order. |
The location of the preferences folder is depends greatly on the OS you are using. Why don't you update your version? Version 4.2.2 is out already (damn they are going fast!). Try it. EDIT: Try it because the newest versions connect to the network much faster than the previous ones. |
OK, took your advice to download newer "pro" version. Still not connecting. Go figure. (Edited a few minutes after posting) I am now on. There seems to be a lag- if I leave the application on it turns on when it wants to. |
You're connected but are you getting incoming? After LW has been on for about half an hour, do this check for us: Bug Report instructions & sample image If it's false then you probably have a modem blocking incoming, in which case: What brand name & model number of modem do you use? Update your Java: Java 1.4.x OR Java 1.5 (take the JRE) A well set-up LW can start to continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. |
I am a simpleton when it comes to computer stuff. Yes, downloads are happening as of my last post- of the Sou' Pa'k kind. But hte connection has stopped. |
Here's a quick test: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ What happens when you go to that site? It should be: 'Your test page was a success!' Please tell us your modem brand name & its model number. This could be important if it uses NAT (which can block many incoming ports) |
Speedstream 5100 |
Test was a success- use 5100 "spead stream" with five lights |
Ah you posted this post in your other thread re: avi. It gave me a head-ache trying to move it here lol. OK thankyou for providing your modem. This IS the issue. You will need to forward a port & give it the port no. that LW uses which is port 6346. See Speedstream 5100 port forward instructions After doing that you will need to force ip within LW. For instrucitons see: LW Force IP settings & instructions & sample image |
Your modem does still need to be configured b/c it uses NAT which will reduce your connectability with LW. It will particularly make it incredibly difficult for anybody to upld from you. I had this same problem myself just a month ago. Once it's done, you'll notice LW's efficiency & connectivity will increase dramatically. |
Hi, Thanks for your assistance so far. I went to the site for opening a port and the IP address provided did not work. That is the first hurdle. The next is, when it does work, trying to remember the password... |
lol Yeah you need to keep a close record of your password just in case. For me, I have the page bookmarked & auto-login. I'm almost the only person who uses my comp. Try the ip thing again. Read these 2 links very carefully! And think about the choice of no.'s. And make notes about the no.'s when they tell you to (write them down.) http://www.portforward.com/efficient/5100-dhcp.htm http://www.portforward.com/networkin...ic-xp-dhcp.htm After you have set up a static address you are ready for port forwarding. |
Question- The numbers you mention- do they have anything to do with the troubleshooting guide found on the main menu of the LM site? |
LW is by default meant to run thru port 6346. It can be run on other ports. Re: port no.'s the answer is yes. As for the other address I don't know. I haven't had experience with a firewall. If necesary I'd call on someone else to answer that question. |
Thanks... will update. Also posted in the other world. BTW- prefered browser is Neoplanet. |
Ok. On LM main page when you get to step 17, do you go to step 12 or 14? I know it sounds basic, please excuse my ignorance. |
No xcuse my ignorance but I've never configured a xp firewall. I use mac. I did see a user post a slight alternative to those instructions. But finding it could take an eternity. I searched it once before without success. |
Hi, thanks for your reply. The 5100 Speedstrem Modem was supplied by SBC/Yahoo. I attempted to connect using the SBC/Tahoo supplied browser but when I went to http://www.portforward.com/efficient/5100-dhcp.htm and put in the appropriate #'s (copy & paste) it was a blank. So I opened Windows Explorer... I never used it but signed up all and ditto ... went to portforward and used the same address but still came up blank. As I check connections on my LM connections info is going out. On a personal note, I learned how to "drive" on a Mac many years ago and loved it! Well, like standard vs. automatic, auto was cheaper in the long run and most feasible in the big world of business. Just bought a Sony laptop, *but* it sure ain't as fun. I salute you. |
I'm relatively new at the connections wection so I'll get somebody with a lot more experience. Their native language is not english (hope you speak French lol.) And they are very good at solving these issues. You may need to be patient because they're busy at present to my knowledge. It would help for us all if you registered as a member of the forum. It's easier to contact you then. And vice versa. |
Before we take more time to think about what goes wrong, do you happen to have win XP SP2 installed by any chance? SP2 limits the outgoing connections and is a bitch. You might want to look at this thread if you want. (if you a new to computers, it might be easier to uninstall SP2 in add/remove programs) http://gnutellaforums.com/showthread...ax+windows+sp2 If no SP2, and no worky: configure the modem as bridged mode (making the modem only act as a modem, no router) look there to do so: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101306.asp *WARNING* You'll have to configure the PPoE connnection on your computer now to connect so have in hand the connection settings first!!!! To configure PPoE in XP, go http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpadcon.htm Bonne chance! |
Three weeks ago or more a helpful minded folk did "download the most recent of everything". " It appears that the problems began around that time frame (with the exception of viewing avi files which has always been the case.). This is a simple computer... like a 3 cylinder as opposed to a turbo. Speak french but not spell. Plenty left available. |
To "et voilą", Your message must mean something but makes no sense to me. |

Please help me understand what the origional message was. Thanks for your reply. |
1) Hmmm do you have winxp service pack 2 installed? 2)right now your modem is NOT a simple modem: it is a modem + router. The bridged link makes the modem do only it's modem job, no more. This means your computer has to tell your modem to whom it has to connect. Hence the PPoe config on your computer. Est-ce plus clair maintenant? Ciao |
Thanks for your reply. After an intense search of my library- all french books are missing except " Barron's Educaitonal Series tape series circa 1985.". This is an unexpected blow. Don't take your library for granted- especially when you move. Best. D. |
What is it you don't understand? If it's in reference to win XP's SP2 update, it can cause problems with connections & you'd need to re-check all your firewall configurations & possibly do more such as apply special patches to repair the damage SP2 has done. There's no need for anybody to update to SP2!!! It's intended for big companies with major networks, but even then its caused major problems b/c like most things MS does, it contains bugs & behaves in ways it shouldn't. MS never tell you about these things. It has cost big business many millions of dollars in lost revenue & all due to MS's lack of competence. |

Greetings, I did not contact the internet provider as LOR suggested as it appears the issue resolved itself. Recap: Connection issues so went through the RX main page of LM. Udated to newest version of LM re: advice. Still had problems... but the situation appears to have resolved itself. Was going to call internet provider (sbc- dsl)) for a walk-thu on opening the port but there is no need at the present time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is the motto for now. Everything is and has been bright green on my end for th past five days. LM signal being received is a from a sub-station of a sub-station from the CO. Comments welcome. D. |
