Please help,
I had no problems with LimeWire on my computer running
WinXP SP1, but now I have installed SP2, LimeWire connection
quality will not go beyound FAIR.
I have tried all suggests on your forums about SP2 but with no luck.
Has anyone got any more ideas?
Regards,
MDS.

Try updating your Java to the most recent: Java 1.5 (take the JRE)

Leave LW running for about an hour. If no improvement then do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image & post back whether it's true/false. Also tell us your modem & router brand name & model numbers. Lot's of people have been using NAT modems/routers for years without realising that their setup was not allowing LW full access.

I presume you applied the SP2 patch. And double-checked your firewall settings? SP2 will change your Firewall settings. To be sure check here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Hello. I have just downloaded limewire. I have Windows XP with the firewall OFF. I have a router it is DI-604. I dont know how to do the port forwarding on this one since we just got in yesterday. I havent played with it yet. But my connection some times will say FAIR but then other times i get the error saying that it is behind a firewall. I have DSL and my connection is very good. I will post a bug report after this to let u look at it. Thanks.

Hello Meeksy2001: That's an unhappy looking Bug Report you have there. lol I see you're feeding LW with Java 1.3. Did you install with the international installer or the english one? The international one is a much larger installer. If you used the enlish installer, then you can update your Java. And that's exactly what I would recommend to do: Java 1.5 (take the JRE)

2ndly. Your router will need to be port forwarded to allow LW full access. At present it's only getting partial access. Port Forwarding instructions for the Dlink DI-604 You must read the instructions very carefully & make sure you create a static ip. Save & reboot yur modem after completion. You need to use Port number 6346.

You will also need to make some adjustements within LW. You will need to force ip: LW Force IP instructions & sample image

Tell us how you get on. This should fix your problem. It's a fact of life nowadays for high speed modems to require forwarding a port for p2p, video conferencing & game use.

Hi Lord Of The Rings,
Well I have taken your advice, I am fully update with SP2 and
Patch. I downloaded Java 5 as you suggested but my computer would not except it as Java 5 is for 64 bit computers, mine is still 32. Firewall as been configered as suggested by LimeWire.
So I am still in the dark what to do.
I ran up LimeWire and it took 20mins. to get from Fair to Good an then other 10 mins. to get to Excellent, then I waited other 1 hour to see if it would get to Turbo. which it did not, so I gave up.
Shut down my computer waited 5mins. and fired up, this time I could not get LimeWire passed Fair.
I am at a loss.
MDS.

Lord of the Rings November 23rd, 2004 12:26 PM

Sorry about the JAva I didn't realise it was limited (I don't think it is but anyway.) YOu can also update to Java 1.4.x here: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Can you also tell me your modem devices. Plese have a look at the questions I asked meeksy2001 & give me all the details.

In the meantime go to this site & tell me what it says if anything: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ This is a 'quick' test to see if there's anything blocking LW's direct path. It should have a message saying your test was a success.

I do all of that. But it still doesnt work. But now the error doesnt pop up with the Firewall or bad connection thing. Now it just says connecting. Any more suggestions? I will post my Bug Report after i did all of the ideas. Thanks

Change LW to manually connect not auto connect (LW's menu Tools>Options>Connection & untick option box & press both Apply & OK buttons.) Then go to File menu & choose connect. Wait up to an hour for LW to settle down. Don't do anything with LW over that time. Any difference?

If not, tell me how many incomplete files you have.

Lord of the rings. I still cant get connected and i now know its not my routers problem. As when i shutdown my router i still cant connect. Theirfore its the program itself and plus i called my routers company and asked them what i could do within the router. The said once i set the DMZ to my computer its not the routers fault. So something else is stopping it. If u could email me ur phone number maybe i could try to get ahold of u and talk and u can help me out? my email is ***
Thanks meeksy2001

Salut Meeksy, there are two possibilities:
1) SP2 is the problem
2) The router config is the problem

To test wether it is 1) or 2)
To test if 1) is the problem:
Connect to the internet directly from the modem (unplug the router). If you can't connect and you think everything in Sp2 should be rightly configured, I suggest you to uninstall Sp2 in add/remove programs. Sp2 is a bitch.

If it is not windows XP or firewall, the router is not well configured. I would reread that thread LOTR posted http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...291#post106291 Port forwarding is much more secure and better then DMZ, also, it works better at *really* opening ports.

Bonne chance! ;)

Sorry to hear you're still having problems. This may or may not make a difference but try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed. But before you do, make a note of your LW settings b/c you'll need to reset your LW option settings including Force IP (instructions in my earlier 2nd post.)

LW Preferences folder is called .limewire & found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
