I can't connect please help Hey Guys, I have tried everything, I think. I have tried deleting the .limewire thing.I have tried to configure the firewall from service pack 2 with the help on the limewire web page. I don't think I would have to do the port forwarding thing because I have a speedstream 2500 modem and it has a Usb port, ethernet port power cord port and the port where you put the DSL line in.The USB line goes to my computer that does not connect and the ethernet cord goes to my router. So this computer is not really connected to the router but it is connected to the modem directly. So i would not have to open a port. I also updated the Java thing. Please help me I have been trying to get it connected for like 3 weeks. |
Go to this site & tell us what you see: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ It should say test page was a success. |
YO I HAVE A FIREWALL WHICH I FIX TO MAKE IT WORK, BUT IT STILL SAY THAT IT WAS UNABLE TO SETUP A PORT TO LISTEN FOR OTHER CONNECTIONS, WHAT DO I DO, EVERYTIME I DELETE THE DIRECTORY, SOON I START LIMEWIRE BACK UP, THE DIRECTORY FOLDER COMES BACK..........WHAT DO I DO????????????? HELP PLEASE |
After you delete the LW prefs folder, the next time you open LW it will create a new prefs folder. That's fine. BYRDIE can you tell us the brand name & model number(s) of your modem & router? This could be blocking much of your access if it's a NAT modem. |
ALL I KNOW IS THAT I HAVE COMCAST(BROADBAND) WHICH IS DSL, IONO ALL THESE TECHINCAL TERMS, SO EXCUSE ME IF I SAY SOMETHING STUPID, IT WORKED FOR LIKE 3 DAYS AGO, NOW ITS SAYIN THAT IT CANT FIND THE PORT TO CONNECT, AND I TURNED MY FIREWALL COMPLETELY OFF, IT STILL WOULDN`T WORK, WHAT DO I DO????????? |
HOW DO I FIND THE MODEL NUMBER, SO U CAN GIVE ME INSTRUCTIONS TO FOWARD THIS THING, CUZ FROM WHAT I HEARD BROADBAND(COMCAST) USES NAT, SO WHERE DO I FIND THE MODEL NUMBER |
The model number should be on the top side or bottom of the modem/router. eg: rannorton specified that his modem brand is Speedstream & its model no. is 2500 If you can find the brand name, chances are the model number will be close by. To test if you have a NAT modem visit this site & read what it says in the grey box: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~trw/games/nat_or_not.php It will say whether you have a NAT modem or not. Easy eh! ;) |
Hey lord of the rings I went to http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ and it said this page can not be displayed. What should i try next?? |
Lord of the rings I did the test at http://www.u.arizona.edu/~trw/games/nat_or_not.php and apparently i use nat, what ever that is. |
NAT refers to network address translation, a system which lets you share an Internet connection among many computers while allowing for unique IP addresses for each computer. Many DSL and Cable modem switches use NAT. In ordere to combat its blocking of ports you need to do what's known as port forwarding. But you'll eneed to give us the specific details of modem brand name & model no. for us to give you instructions for how to do. The fact you failed both tests is not good, so you must pay a lot of attention to all instructions given to you to make sure you get them right. Any small mistake & you could be back where you started or worse. 1. Configure ALL of your firewalls: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml 2. Supply all details requested! 3. Update your Java: Java 1.4.x Or else Java 1.5 (take the JRE) |
The modem is a speed stream 5200, but I already have the directions about how to set a static IP adress and how forward the ports for the modem. I just did not know if that is what i needed to do. Thanks for Your help rannorton |
It is listed at PortForward.com as a modem type that uses nat & requires port forwarding. So yes you should do it. 1. See Port Forwarding instructions for the Efficient Speedstream 5200 Router 2. See Force IP instructions & sample image Use Port 6346 for all port settings. |
YO I`M READIN EVERYTHING OFF THE SIDE, IT SAYS DPC2100, SO I HOPE THIS WHAT U LOOKIN FOR, THE BRAND IS SCIENTIFIC ATLANTA |
I have tried everything, and i also can't connect. I'm using a Toshiba pcx2200 modem, no router. The test page says my test was successful, I am not using NAT. I followed the steps to set up Windows Firewall to allow Limewire to connect, but that doesn't work either. Limewired doesn't connect even when the firewall is turned off. I'm at my wits end. Any help would be appreciated. It used to work, even after SP2 update. Oh, and I ran that patch to change the number of connections also. |
masterchief: Leave LW running for up to an hour & see if it improves & then do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image & report back whether it says true or false. Update your Java: Java 1.4.2 If no improvement then do this: Also make a note of all your LW settings & then quit LW & delete LW's Preferences folder called .limewire & found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire Next time you open LW, it will create a new Prefs folder. |
I ran the bug report and it said false. I have deleted the .limewire folder several times, and I'm not sure which Java version I had, so I updated anyways. Still no dice. I guess I will leave it on for an hour or so like you suggested. |
The problem with SP2 is that there's no simple one answer to solve the issues. One solution fixes it for some but not for all & likewise for other solutions posted. That's why there's been more than one solution posted. As for your firewall, perhaps you should double-check your settings. Something is blocking LW's access. Exactly what is a mystery at the moment. Go here & what does it say?: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ It should say your test page was a success. If not, tell us what happened. SP2 is totally unnecessary for the individual user. It was designed for major company's with big networks but it's even caused many of them problems. Search around the net & you'll find plenty of commentary from experts who have said SP2 is not necessary for individual users & should even be avoided. |
That page says its successful. Limewire actually worked after SP2 installation, this is a recent development. Thanks for your help, though. |
Finally connected after 40 minutes or so. Am I going to have to do that every time? Thanks for the help, Lord of the Rings. |
masterchief: See how it goes. Do you have many incomplete files? Were you in the habit of using the Resume button function? Resume is fine for the odd file. But if you do it to too many, it results in the files queuing for much, much longer & can play havoc with LW's connection quality. Some hints for optimising LW: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. |
