I've got a powermac 8600 running OS9.1. Installed LW pro 4.0.2. Can't connect. I've tried everything mentioned on the forum. File sharing is on. updated to MRJ 2.2.4. Tips is off. Autostart is off. LW prefs was deleted. typed in Gnutella/limewire w/ port 6346 in the Socks firewall box. Hope that is correct. I have a cable hook-up through a router (both modem and router are Linksys products). Haven't called the cable company yet. Can anyone help?

Java is very important for LW. You should be able to at least update to MRJ 2.2.5 for OS 8.1-9.2

High speed modems & many routers use internal NAT firewalls. Can you tell us the model numbers of both your modem & router? These may rewquire port forwarding to allow LW full access thru port 6346.

Ok, I updated to mrj2.2.6 and the model numbers are...
Linksys Etherfast cable/modem BEFCMU10
Linksys Etherfast Router BEFSR41
Should file sharing be on or off?

I'm sorry somehow I missed your post.

So you will need to forward a port.

1. 1st you'll need to set up a static ip: How to set up a static IP address with the Linksys Router

2. Port Forwarding instructions for the Linksys BEFSR41 versions 3, 4, 5 and CA & use Port 6346 You may need to reboot your router to accept these changes (i'm not totally sure about that.)

3. Within LW you'll need to force ip: Force IP instructions & sample image

I called my cable company and they said that there is no static ip address that they can give me. It's not necessary, for their setup. So, I proceeded to go through the above instructions. I went to the "static Ip address guide" at the Portforward website and they did not offer an address for any macs only pc operating systems. Anyway, I preceeded with the port forwarding and typed in "Gnutella/Limewire" under customized applications, then "6346 to 6346, I checked both tcp and udp, left the ip address as 192.168.1, and checked enable. I then went into LW advanced firewall settings and did as you instructed. Still no connection. My apologies in advance for needing so much assistance.

I don't think You went to the right link for setting up a static ip. The link from step 2 that give a guide for setting up a static ip is for windows. But The link I gave you in step 1 is from the Linksys support site. The instructions look fairly clear. Click on the link from Step 1 above. Without a Static IP, port forwarding will not be successful.

In fact I'll copy it here:

In order to configure the router with a static IP address, you will need the following information from your ISP:

IP address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Domain Name Server (DNS) addresses

Access the Router's web based utility by typing http://192.168.1.1/into your web browser.

A password window will appear.

Leave username blank and enter the password as admin (all lowercase).

Click OK.

Once on the Setup page, go directly to the WAN IP Address or WAN Connection Type, and change the option from Obtain an IP address Automatically to Specify an IP Address.

Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS you retrieved from your ISP.

Scroll down and click Apply.

If settings are successful, click Continue.

The Router is now set up for use with your provider and a static IP address.

(By the way ... Some of this information needed you will find in your control panel. I can't remember which one it is, either Configuration Manager or TCP/IP or Internet.)

Setting static IP in os 9


1. Click on the Apple menu and select Control Panels
2. Click TCP/IP
3. In the Connect via field, select the adapter you want to manually assign.
4. Select Manually from the Configure drop down list.
5. In the IP Address section, type a unique IP address for each client computer using the range between 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.55
6. In the Subnet Mask section, type 255.255.255.0
7. In the Router section, type 192.168.1.1
8. In the Name Server box, type 192.168.1.1
9. Click Apply Now

Go in the router config at port forwarding and open the port 6346 on TCP and UDP at the IP you gave to your computer.
