New user...can't connect

I am running XP on my home computer. I am connecting to the internet with a cable modem, my ISP is Cox Comunications. I read all the FAQ's, I have done everything I was supposed to do to ensure Limewire had access through my firewall and when that didn't work I got frustrated and just turned it off. I still can't connect. I even shutdown Limewire, deleted my preferences (.limewire) folder and started Limewire back up again. Nothing has worked.

Any other suggestions?

Can you tell us your Modem & router brand name & model numbers.

Try these things:

1. Repair LimeWire using the Add/Remove Programs utility. Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs & click on Limewire on the Change/Remove button & it comes up with options and one of them is Repair. Try this.

2. Right-clicking the Limewire icon and going to properties and changed compatability setting to Windows 2000.

3. Update your Java version 1.4.x OR version 1.5 (take the JRE)

4. Delete the LW Preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed!) found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire Make a note of your option settings b/c you'll need t reset them.

5. Right-click on the Limewire icon on the desktop and click on Run as. Then it should up showing the current user and then switch it over to Administrator.

Did you configure your firewalls to allow both LW & Java full access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Do you have XP SP2?

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version,
2. What firewalls you have,
3. ram, 4. HDD space available,
5. Connection type,
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers,
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?

http://portforward.com/
Click on the "Routers" button and go to Thompson. There are two 501 so try them both (unless you know precisely wich one is yours).
Make sure you also have properly configured your firewall according to the official LW site.

You will need to set up a static ip for port forwarding to work! See the link at port forward.com about how to do that (on 1st line of forwarding instructions.) Also see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...163#post113163 for other things you should do such as configure your sygate firewall & force ip. Also make sure your Java is up to date: http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...radejava.shtml

i have tried all the above and downloads have sped up and i am now getting some uploads but when i do the port test it still shows that i am behind a firewall/router. i suppose as long as i am downloading and uploading there is nothing else to do, thanks for all your help.
