Sudden Connecting Problems

Hello all i'm new to the boards. Anyways i've had Limewire for a little of a year. When the update first came around i decided to wait awhile before i upgraded it. I decided to tpdate this yesterday. Up until then Limewire was working fine. Now whenever i open the program up and select to connect it won't get past "connecting". This is the first problem i've ever had with limewire that i couldn't fix myself. I've seen that many others have had this problem and there are many solutions posted and i think i've tried them all, but none of them have seemed to work.If someone could help me i'd greatly appreciate it.

My operating system is Windows Xp and connect to the internet thourgh a dsl connection. I can't clairfy how fast it is. I am also connected through a hub if that makes any difference

Sirwaffle January 18th, 2005 07:09 PM

Can anybody help me? Am i missing any information? Anyone?

Sirwaffle January 20th, 2005 12:14 PM

Perhaps that's why! What do we know you perhaps don't already know. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/announ...?s=&forumid=29 It's not easy if we don't know anything about your problem. We don't even know which operating system you use! Getting the gist of what I'm saying? We need as many details as possible. We don't know what you've tried. If you'd read so many posts you'd also be aware what we need to know to help.

I think i got the gist of what you were saying. I have Windows Xp home edition, version 5.1, and i only have the first service pack. I have Verison dsl that runs at 645.5 kilobits per second. On the modem itself it says, Fujitsu speedport and I didn't see the model number. I have a hub if that makes a difference. I'm doing this from my home. I don't get an error message, and the only thing that limewire seems to do is stay in the connecting phase.I don't have a firewall, and i made sure that the one that comes with xp is turned off. I have 512 MB of RAM. I have 68 GB of memory free.

Thank you for atleast posting something. I know you must get a lot of people like me everyday and i'd like to say i appreciate you trying to help me. I hope i gave the information you needed.

Port forwarding (opening port 6346 for LW) might help. I have instructions here but don't know if they are exact for your model. The principle will be the same. So if you choose to do this the instructions are below.

1. You will need to set up a static ip 1st for this to work! 2. Instructions: http://www.portforward.com/fujitsu/ap-600rp-usb.htm & use Port 6346.

3. Force ip within LW using Port 6346: Force IP instructions & sample image

4. Try the Beta 4.3.3 which overcomes some major bugs in 4.2.x: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml or if you're a Pro user you'll find a link at the bottom of your personal downld page.

Sirwaffle January 25th, 2005 09:06 PM

When i used the instructions for setting up a static ip address i got another problem. when i typed command in the run window i got an error message that read "The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications." I currently trying to find a solution to this problem. If you have any ideas, they would be most aprreciated

*I am currently*

Lord of the Rings January 25th, 2005 09:30 PM

There's two steps to setting up a static ip for your brand of modem. You'll find the last part at the bottom of that page in a brown link; ie: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip-dhcp.htm

Sirwaffle January 26th, 2005 02:06 PM

I finally fixed my problem with the command promt. The only step i haven't done is #2. I don't have a firewall or router and thats what these directions seem to need you to have in order to follow them correctly.

Sirwaffle January 27th, 2005 04:31 PM

When i typed my ip address in the navigation bar i got a message that said the connection was refused. Again when i tried in internet explorer, it said that it couldn't find the address.

Perhaps your Speedport doesn't have a nat firewall after all. But some do. That's why it's listed at portforward.com

Set your LW to manual connect. If you're sharing over 1,000 files then for the time being reduce this down to say 1/10th of the number. Open LW & let it load the incompletes & shared files. Give it at least 20 mins. Then go to File>Connect. Wait up to an hour to see if it will connect. Do do anything with LW over this time.

It might also be wise for the time being to Disable Ultrapeer capabilities if you are running as a UP. This can be found under Tools>Options>Speed. Don't forget to press Apply after any changes to option settings. Good luck! :)

Nope stilll nothing. I've double and even tripple checked all the tasks you've told me to do

Sirwaffle January 31st, 2005 11:01 AM

Well today i tried to "Direct Connect" with a friend and it said i couldn't because i was behind a firewall or router. Since the second option doesn't apply to me, i think one of my programs on my computer must have a firewall that comes with it. I think this might be the problem.

On a side note. I do have a router, but it's not attached to anything at the moment. Do you think that if i used the router instead of the hub, that it would make a difference?

fabion January 31st, 2005 11:17 AM

Just a thought are you able to do a bug report. LimeWire tools options view sample. I f you are It might help the experts some to see it. You should be able to copy it then paste it back here.

Lord of the Rings January 31st, 2005 11:21 AM

Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is it True/False? If it's false then you have a firewall somewhere! Either hardware or firewall softw.

Which version of LW are you using? It might be wise to move up to LW 4.4 which has better firewall detection & control.

Sirwaffle January 31st, 2005 06:37 PM

 It said false:eek: Oh man i'm looking for anything that may closely be related to a firewall. Is there a page anywhere with a list of programs that have firewalls.

Thank you again for all your help.

fabion January 31st, 2005 06:42 PM

If you are using windowsXP sp2 go to start then control panel then security center. This will show your firewall. I just re-read this thread and you said you only had sp1. sorry I missed that, but just to make sure you can go to start control panel add or remove programs and make sure the show updates is checked. Then you can scroll down and see.

Sirwaffle January 31st, 2005 06:52 PM

I don't have sp2, i only have the first one. When i downloaded the 2nd one it destroyed my computer. I had to get someone to reformat the hard drive for me. Btw They were a professional.

fabion January 31st, 2005 07:06 PM

BTW I was editing my previous post while you were posting. But if your auto update had been enabled. It may have installed the update without your knowledge. I have seen more than 1 profesional make an honest mistake.

Sirwaffle January 31st, 2005 08:27 PM

Oh my God. I just found the problem. Although i've never used it, there was a zonealarm program on my computer. I feel very stupid for not seeing it. As oh now my Limewire is going at the speed of excellent.

I'd personally like to thank fabion and Lord of The Ring for their constant help and fast information. I'm so happy that it's up again. The only thing that i can give is my gratitude and this thing ----> O. It looks like a plain cookie, but you both deserve it. Be careful because they are hot.
