Losing connection after time

I never had a problem until I upgraded to the current version of Limewire. I have a cable connection. After like 5-10 minutes I lose my internet connection and I have to powercycle my modem. If I restart my computer it doesn't always fix it. I have gone back with an older version and the same problem.

Cable modem
Service Pack 1

Try this: Fixes for Limewire

Or/& this: Limewire beta 4.3.2

Still the same problem. I have used bearshare to see if it was my comp and I have no problems with it, only Limewire. I rather use Limewire.

Go to LW's menu Tools>Options>Speed & tick Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities & press the Apply button. Go to Tools>Options>Uploads>Basic & reduce uploads to about 80%.

When you open LW, let it settle for up to 30 mins or more. Don't jump in & try to search before hand. Don't use the Resume/Find Sources button on many (if any files)! Otherwise this will give our LW connection quality problems.

Is that a USB modem you're using? If yes, & you have the option of ethernet & you have an ethernet card on your comp., use that. It's far more reliable than USB. USB modems get their power from the comp & utilise the cpu for operation. Whereas ethernet modems are independent (& faster.)

So what brand & model number of modem/router do you use?

Have you configured your firewalls to allow LW full access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

I have already done that, 10 minutes after I start up limewire I lose my internet completely no matter what. I turned off my firewalls to see if it worked and nothing. I never had a problem until I updated Limewire, using older versions after didn't help either.

I am using an ethernet connection to a Motorola SBG900 modem

One firewall you didn't turn off is the NAT firewall within your modem. It will at least partially block port 6346 which is what LW uses.

1. It's up to you but may I suggest you forward a port on your modem. 1st you will need to set up a static ip but instructions are included on the 1st line (Step 1) of the following link: Port Forwarding for the Motorola SBG900 Wireless Router & use Port 6346

2. You'll also need to Force IP within LW using port 6346: Force IP instructions & sample image

3. Rather than switch off your firewalls (you need protection), why not configure them so LW has access thru them: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

I hope this helps! ;)

Try all the stuff listed by all the others but a simple fix for me was that i found that my speed had changed from Cable/DSL back to just plain modem. When i changed it back to Cable/DSL it works even better than before.

Same problem but different router

I am having the same problem but with a different router. I have a Linksys Etherfast cable/dsl router Model number BEFSR41 V.2. Now I have just gotten the pro version of this and have also gotten service pack 2. Now I know of others running pro version but with no problems. I have firewalls dissabled and have gone thru and lowered my uploads and did the speed thing and still it disconnects me after about 10 mins. Now I can run other programs that require the internet for days and not have a connection problem. Please help and please be as clear as possible as to I am not the most technically inclined person thanks
