Can't get connected

I am new to file sharing. Saturday I took out a lifetime membership in MyMusicInc.com - cheap enough, but I haven't been able to use it yet. I am having trouble with Limewire and connecting.

First, I do have both my firewalls disconnected.

Limewire 4.4, which I downloaded from several different sites, will not even open. It tries to. So I have installed Limewire version 4.0.7. It opens with no problem, but no matter what I do, it will not connect. Incidentally, I have not been able - so far - to get any help from MyMusicInc.com, beyond a computerized acknowledgment of my e-mail request.

Please can some of you experienced people help me? I will be so thankful. :)

The basic version of LimeWire is free you may have been scammed. Check out this link. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28751

You can download the free basic version from the offical LimeWire site here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

Following a suggestion from one of the "Stickies" from this board, I have Limewire version 4.07 working now - after a fashion. However, now my trouble is freezing - Limewire comes to a freeze after downloading a few songs. I have to shut it down and restart.

I have a Gateway computer running WinsXP. It has been an excellent computer and operating system. My Internet connection is Roadrunner, which is also great here in Central Florida.

I did not pay for the Limewire. It was to join a music sharing website - mymusicinc.com. I hope I did not get taken. I do not know very much about file sharing.

Any suggestions on the freezing up, I will appreciate it. Gary P.

As you can see from this page: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=5 that site you mentioned is a scam site so if you didn't pay for it then you're lucky! (are you sure they didn't charge your debit/credit account?)

If you're running XP then why did you downld LW 4.0.7? That version went out of date 7 months ago. Or there-abouts: http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml

Of course the basic version of LW which connects to 3 peers is free! The pro version which connects to 5 peers is $18.88

To reduce chances of freezing:
* Update your Java: Java 1.5 (take the JRE)
* Reduce uploads to about 70-80%.
* Close all windows you're not using at that time (eg: Monitor, library & connections windows; ie: go to LW menu>View>Show/Hide.)
* Go to Speed & disable Ultrappeer capabilities & press the Apply button.
* Go to Tools>Options>Downloads & tick Auto-clear of completed downlds. And press apply.

*** Don't use the Resume button to continue your incomplete files!!!! Seriously!!! There's better means of continuing your downlds such as a manual search for the topic.

* Wait until LW has completely loaded & accounted for all incomplete & shared files which might take 10 to 20 or so mins before doing anything with LW!!!

First, I thank both of you - Fusion, and Lord of the Rings - for your help and suggestions.

I am using Limewire 4.07 because the newest, 4.4, will not work for me. I have tried downloading from several sites. It begins to initiate but then fails and fades away to nothing. Limewire 4.07 works fine except for its freezing. I will try the suggestions on the freezing issue. I am able to download with no problem, until the freezing hits.

Re my membership into MyMysicInc.com - I was directed by a newsletter to this following website - http://www.webreviews.org/ - which website sings mymusicinc's praises so well that I joined. I paid $34.95 for a lifetime membership. Now I am wondering what I received for that!! I wll let you and readers know what I find out and resolve concerning mymusicinc.com.

Thank you, G. Polson
:)

If you read the earlier pages of the link I left you'll see that lifetime membership means paying to show you to the LW site for the free version of LW. Do a search on the forum for mymusic*

Freezing will most likely be caused by either Java or ram. Earlier versions of Java were & in fact still are not that efficient, but have improved. And Java is not ram efficient also which doesn't help but the later versions are a little better in that regard also.

Thanks, Lord of the Rings. Your suggestions helped me solve the freezing problem. Everything is downloading fine now using Limewire.4.07. I will try again to install the 4.4 version and get it to work. I think one thing that helped me was reinstalling the latest version of Java. I have plenty of extra RAM, and a meter - Memory King - that allows me to keep track. Also, I have a RAM defrag I use. Thanks again. By the way, do you have any idea why I can't get the lastest version of Limewire to work? G. Polson:)

At this point no. It might have been the Java. It might be an erratically arranged Registry (might be time for a cleanup) Free & trial links to Registry Cleaners HERE Worth having around anyway so long as it does a trustful job. Updating Softw's can cause a bit of untidiness there.

Good to hear 4.0.7 works. If you're happy with it then stick to it. On windows sometimes odd versions can undo the magic. hahaha lol :D
