...the document could not be opened because the program which created it could not be found....

I know you're about ready to give up, but I would try re-downloading the installation file (to a new directory) and running the installation again (that is, if it even starts).
If you become (or already are) sick of this, check out something like beashare or xolox, or even the LimeWire 1.7 beta.
