connection on and off

I am running xp and have dsl. My firewall is off. My connection work sometimes and not others. It will just go away. I never had probs. before.

cooterfire February 24th, 2005 11:35 AM

Also I am running limewire 4.6.0
Java 1.4.2_05
connect from home
have my windows firewall off
I have a zoom dsl motem
Limewire used to work great, now it will not connect most of the time, when it does it will only go to fair and then will go to connecting. I want to get pro, but if I cant connect I dont think it will help. I am a real laymen when it comes to computers.

updated my java to 1.4.2_04 deleted my pref. folder and redone, and right clicked and run with, set to win 2000. So far no better. If it does connect it will go to fair for a few min then back to connecting.

cooterfire February 24th, 2005 01:45 PM

sorry updated java to 1.4.2_07

IS that a USB modem or ethernet?

cooterfire February 24th, 2005 02:00 PM

not real sure(dont think I am stupid) but I think it is ethernet, It is hooked to my pc with a phone wire looking thing and not not a usb cable.

Lord of the Rings February 24th, 2005 02:44 PM

That's ethernet then! Got me bamboozled. I'm not sure what your problem is. May I ask who your isp is & I'll see if I can find any history of them blocking or filtering p2p speeds?

By the way LW Pro is not dramatically better. Most of the improvements are subtle. OK you connect to 5 peers instead of 3 with basic. But some people don't notice any difference. But then some do. I guess some peope move to pro expecting big things when there are no big things. Just little improvements that you'd notice if you still thought you were using basic. Get familiar with & confident with basic & then consider pro as a thank you to the developers who have developed & even helped out people on occasions on the forum with the basic version. That's one of the main reasons I help out on the forum (even though the forum is independent of LW site itself.)

Then it looks like something has happened that has changed things.

Get rid of the 'old' incomplete files you have that are 0% & also from the downld list window. Leave LW for some time before working with it. Give it time to settle. And when possible where you are slaving over it, apply some of those suggetions I made in those above links. Yes there's days when LW does need baby-sitting but I tend to have a reasonable no. of incompletes & can open it & just more or less forget about it & it looks after itself. The longer it's open the more stable & effective it is to searching & ...

I'm a little confused:confused:
Why did you set the run with win 2000.

Both LW and Java should run okay with WindowsXP.

Try updating to JRE 1.5.0_01 if you can.

Lord of the Rings February 24th, 2005 08:03 PM

These are just very minor twitches that can sometimes get LW doing what it's supposed to do. These techniques more-so apply to LW 4.2 & earlier but some of these points can still apply. See: Fixes for Limewire

My isp is BPS telephone, and I have no incomplete files (deleted them when I started reading this board).

cooterfire February 25th, 2005 10:06 AM

windows 2000 is the newest setting, and that was one of the tips. Also if I just leave Limewire alone, it will put a msg that it was not able to connect, about a hundred times.

fabion February 25th, 2005 02:21 PM

This doesn't look good. Just searched BPS. http://www.bpsnetworks.com/aup.html

Servers
Users are not permitted to establish servers on any BPS Networks connection without prior, written consent from BPS Networks. Types of servers specifically banned include, but are not limited to:

Sharing of files (ftp servers and peer-to-peer sharing software, such as Napster® or Gnutella® are examples)
Mail servers (SMTP or POP3/IMAP servers)
Web Servers

It looks as though you have to get special permission, otherwise they block p2p programs.

Lord of the Rings February 25th, 2005 06:04 PM

It does look that way doesn't it! I'd suggest you contact the isp & find out whether they have applied a filter or port block or other blocking method on your use of LW.

As simple test for port block of 6346 is to use your browser & visit this page: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say ‘Test Page was a Success’. What happens when you go there?

I remember reading another member's comment about their isp on the forum before that if you share/upload more than a certain amount of files then it's seen as a server.

I came across this comment, quote: "I also believe they are hindering P2P uploads on residential accounts because they consider any running and connected P2P application a server no matter what is being shared, legal and illegal." http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...xhsi;mode=nest

cooterfire February 28th, 2005 05:47 AM

Did the test and it was fine. Even deleted a few files(only had 40 to start with) thought that might help. no good.
