4.8.0 version - can no longer turbo We just upgraded to 4.6 this weekend and have always been turbo charged. This evening, we can't get past the first stack for connection. I've checked our firewall settings, I updated our java, I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Any info would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks! |
The turbo engine ran out of blue ink! lol :D No, seriously, try deleting your LW preferences folder; instructions are here: Fixes for Limewire |
Did that first and still no response. |
Hmmm just a thought. Tools>Options>Speed>Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities--- check the box --- click apply then okay Then File>Disconnect Then File>Connect Don't forget also it takes LimeWire some time to stabilize, especially if you have d/l and u/l going on while you try and connect to the network. It may take as long as 30 - 45 minutes sometimes. |
still nothing. same problem. Is there a way to go back to the other version? This problem did not show up until we upgraded to 4.6/4.8. Thanks for your help. |
Are you using LimeWire PRO? |
yes. the version we are having all the problems with is the LimeWire Pro. |
Try this: 1. before you open LW, go to the incomplete folder & list it in file size. Now delete all files that are zero in size. Then open LW, go to downlds window & click on top of Progress bar column. That will arrange them all by size. Now select all those that are 0% (ie: select the 1st one then holding SHIFT key scroll down until the last one & select it.) Then press Stop button. This will clear a lot of unnecessary loading of incomplete files that may be making LW struggle to get started quickly. 2. Do not use the Resume button to get all your downlds to continue after opening LW. This will make LW struggle & can affect LW's connection quality. Even for LW Pro. Some hints that will help generally for using LW & obtaining good results: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...028#post116028 |
Did everything stated and still cannot get past first stack on bottom. The quality is stated as 'connecting'. We have windows xp and updated to the 4.6.0 (which I think is now 4.8.0) this past weekend. We've used limewire for awhile and just ran out of our six month subscription so paid the additional 14.50 to upgrade. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, followed all directions and now am not getting anywhere. The feedback and help is greatly appreciated - unfortunately, it's not moving us past that first stack. |
Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. What firewalls you have? 2. ram? 3. HDD space available? 4. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 6. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 7. What version of Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) 8. Who is your ISP provider? Very mysterious that it's suddenly stopped like this. I wonder if your ISP has coincidently applied a filter of some sort. I'm just wondering if it might be worth changing your Java. This is purely a stab in the dark but it might trigger something. If you have Java 1.5 then go back to 1.4.2 or vice-versa. Sun 1.4.2: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (Choose the JRE) OR Java 1.5 (take the JRE) Are there any other programs you've installed lately or updates? Another thought is to do a system maintenance & check your system over & defragment your HDD. |
i'm having a slightly similar issue i have recently downloaded the new version of limewire (not pro) and when i click on the shortcut or try to open it from the start menu nothing happens. so not only am i having that problem connecting hah i'm having a problem opening the program all together. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times and i tried the firewall fix but that didn't do anything, nor did i think it would because it's the program itself i'm having trouble with. any advice? |
I'll try to answer questions as best I can but I'm somewhat of a computer retard. I don't know what firewalls we have. We use Norton Anti-virus if that helps at all. I did all the firewall checks, etc. that it suggested in the help section and we are up to speed with those things. We have 512 mb ram, I don't know what hdd space is or how to check how much we have available. We connect with a cable modem (motorola sb5100 surfboard cable modem), connecting from home, I uninstalled Jave 1.5 to go back to what we had and we use charter communications. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by our ISP provider but I took a stab. I did a system restore back to Friday night after I again uninstalled limewire and when I rebooted my computer, I had to reinstall limewire and am having the same problem. I know how to get to the defragmentation part but am not sure exactly what to do and don't want to make the problem worse. Sorry, sorry, sorry for not having all the info you need but if you can guide me in the right direction, I'll help any way I can. |
I also wanted to add that we have no trouble connecting to the internet, accessing our email, etc. Outside of limewire 4.8.0, nothing else has been downloaded to our computer. We use limewire on a weekly basis, easily 2-4 times a week and have never once had an issue until now. That's the reason we paid to upgrade to 4.6 - we've had such amazing success and limewire is where we refer our friends. Very frustrated. |
BabyJ: Try opening the program directly from the program folder. ie: probably in C:/Program Files/Limewire Also delete your LW preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire rhschumaker: You've done well with your answers thank you. See how you go with the earlier version of Java (1.4.2) |
Still am not getting anywhere even with the older version of java. |
Are you using manual connect or auto connect as soon as you open LW? As Fabion suggested, it may be an idea to set it for manual connect. Then after opening leave it for 15 mins, then go to menu File>Connect. Don't do anything such as searching or anything else. The priority is for it to connect so let it settle for some time. You cannot rush LW. Let it settle, then try connecting & leave it for a time. By the way, go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & make sure it's set to UPnP & is listening thru port 6346. Do you have any other computers connected to the net or in a network lan? Try the manual connect several times. If still doesn't improve, then try deleting the LW preferences again. |
Interesting thing - I checked the limewire firewall as you suggested and the port is 6348 - won't allow me to change it to 6346. Am trying the manual connect and this is the only computer we have connected. When you say delete the lw preferences again, are you talking about the limewire folder? |
Uninstalled once again and now the firewall setting is reading 6346. I left it disconnected for 20 minutes and then manually connected and left it and still no response. Did it again and nothing. Is there anyway I can download an earlier version? I just want to go back to the way things were! :o Again, thank you for all your assistance. I apologize for being a pain. |
Hmmm not sure why you can't change your listen on port. But here is an idea can you configure your firewall to allow access to port 6348. Also is LW set to UPnP |
I reinstalled and initially read 6346 but I just checked and now it reads 6348. I changed my firewall ports to 6348 and no change. In my windows firewall settings is the upnp supposed to be checked? currently it isn't - I did a test run where I did have it checked and still nothing. |
Salut rhschumaker, now you'll test switching another port like 1234 (my favorite ;) ) to see if your ISP (internet service provider, yours is Charter) block Gnutella ports (6346-6348). If that doesn't work, we'll see if LW is the problem by downloading another Gnutella app free of spywares: www.bearshare.com/lite/ If bearshare doesn't work, the problem is probably your ISP blocking the Gnutella traffic, call them! Bonne chance :p |
I was able to download and run bearshare. Again, I am a computer retard and don't understand what this means, why I can't use limewire. I put '1234' into the port and it accepted that. I don't want bearshare, if possible. We've been happy with limewire, just paid to upgrade again...any suggestions? If nothing else, is there a way for me to get an earlier version and just contact limewire for my $14.50 back? Please help:confused: |
You aren't clear... IS bearshare able to connect?? Now please list the processes that show up with ctrl-alt-delete. There ia probably an installed app such as Norton or McAffee that stops you from connecting. Ciao |
sorry for being unclear - yes, bearshare is able to connect. When you say ctrl-alt-delete, I'm confused. If I were to do it now, 'lock computer', 'shut down', 'task manager', 'cancel', 'log off', 'change password' all show up in the dialog box. I'm probably way off with what you want me to do - sorry. Please explain and I'll execute immediately. Thank you!! |
task manager. There should be a lot of processes, so if you can post a screenshot, it would be great (when you reply there is the option to attach file below the reply text box). Ciao |
I'm sorry for even having to ask you this...I can get there - I just don't know how to attach a screen shot. sorry, sorry, sorry |
let me clarify - I don's know how to copy it so that I can add it as an attachment. |
You have to take a screenshot first with a screenshot program (Fabion might help you there as I'm on a mac, I hate windows ;) ) Could you also tell us if there is any text showing in the connection tab (enable it in display-> show/hide->connections) -sorry if in english it is different than my frenchto english translation, I prefer LW in french ;) Ciao :p |
Well not that I have been ignoring this, but I was looking to see if I had any programs to do this, and I don't. I've been wanting to make some up myself. Guess it's time to do a google. I'll be back when I find something, hopefully free. Here is a link to a free program that will take screen snapshots. http://www.irfanview.com/ I just d/l it and it works okay. You will just have to follow the instructions. You can save the snapshop, and then attach the snapshot here as an attachment. |

I actually figured out how to do the screen shot. Quick question, under task manager, there are several different folders. which one did you want a screen shot of? applications, processes, performance, networking, or users? Where you ask me to go to the connection tab, I don't know what that is or where that is. |
I believe et voila wanted a snapshop of -- processes In LW 1) view 2)show/hide ---- highlight connections --- click There should be a connection tab showing now. |
1 Attachment(s) it says connections:leaf |
humm. You are probaly aware that you are NOT showing all the 53 processes in that screenshot, so it doesn't help... BUT, you have two simultaneous instances of limewire.exe, which isn't normal. Close ALL the processes of limewire.exe by selecting those progresses and click "end process". Then start LW, go in connection tab, and if it doesn't connect, post here a screenshot of the connection tab. Ciao |
It might be worth doing a computer search to see if there is more than one version/copy of LW on your compuer. Or if it's just one version of LW running twice. |
1 Attachment(s) Only one version on my computer - again, I uninstalled everything and reinstalled and deleted the processes (yes, was aware that I wasn't showing everything but I had to keep shrinking so that it met the size requirements). Here's my screeenshot. |
Well that is totally unconnected. lol :D Any chance of showing the 2nd half of your activity processes from the 1st image earlier. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's the other half |
1 Attachment(s) Here's the first half. |
I see you have norton antivirus in the processes. It might be the problem, look there to configure it for LW (in short you'll have to allow access to limewire.exe to the internet) http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl= Are you also positive you configured LW to connect on start? Go in options -> Connections-> the option there sould be checked and apply. You have a lot of processes running I would recommend some things to you: 1)get rid of popupbegone and explorer and get a real web browser like firefox (google it, free) 2)get an anti-spyware program such as adaware or spybot (google them, they are free as well) Bonne chance |
nobody has answered my question in a helpful manner. deleting .limewire didn't work |
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That worked!!! Et voila - can I ask you a couple of quick questions? I got rid of explorer and popupbegone like you suggested and now use firefox. Already had adaware. What do all the processes that are showing mean and should I do something else to get rid of some of them? Also, our subscription for Norton is coming due next week - is there a different antivirus software that you would suggest in lieu of Norton? Again, thank you everyone for your help!:) |
I recommend avast in lieu of Norton http://www.avast.com/ It is free, and uses less ram than Norton. You only have to register then they send you the product key via email. I install on windows computers and it works great. For the processes, you should look for your own processes (Rob and hallie or whatever I can't remember ;) ) Type the name of the processes in Goolge ie: Limewire.exe and see what program responsible of the process, you should be able to cut the crap by desinstalling the programs that you don't use. Bonne chance |
A million thanks! I did all as you suggested and am happy with the results. Again, thank you for your time and patience! Hallie |
