Connecting...?! when?
 

I am going crazy. I can search when I connect from dial-up ( I have a sierra air card PCMCIA with CDMA wireless connection for dial up to browse etc.) but I've tried everything, to search when I'm connected to internet from LAN in my work place. WHAT's the ISSUE????????

The issue could be with your work's set up. Some system admins will block p2p either blocking certain ports or disallowing uncertified softw's or using a p2p blocker. On another note, last I heard there was a bug with UPnP for use on a lan. I'm not sure whether it's been fixed yet. you can test to see whether the port LW uses has been blocked by doing this simple test. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say ‘Test Page was a Success’. What happens when you go there?

I guess, the test is to be made for my LAN connection; I'll come back after I try it at work in the day, later.

Ye, the page displays "Your test page was a success!". I may also tell as well, following my reading of messages posted by others regarding connection problems, I've done whatever.. Firewall settings, advanced, for LAN..adding ports for TCP, UDP, Exceptions to LW, Proxy settings for browser> Firefox, & on Firefox, Options>Tools>Web Features>Allowed Sites..www.limewire.com..what else?

Have you successfully used LW at work at all? Is this the 1st time you've tried?

Is it possible to forward ports with the equipment at work? Wireless tend to use internal NAT firewalls. I presume these are ethernet.

Which version of OS & Java are you using at work?

I'm not sure about the reasons for your proxy settings for firefox. But if you're using proxy settings for LW then I think you need to have Socks v5 ticked & access port 6346 (LW's menu Tools>Options>Advanced>Proxy) Might also need to Force IP: Force IP instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

I've never been able to use LW at work, ever since I downloaded it, from www.limewire.com. Now, I think I need a techie, for the rest of the things, I can hardly make out! I use my lap top both at home & work: at home, I connect using Sierra card; at work-the ethernet lan cable or whatever. I know both WIndows & Java exist on my m/c, but versions? how does one find out? Without eanbling Proxy settings over my LAN, Firefox won't connect! To be clear, I don't want to use Sierra at work.. so, I connect via LAN i.e, Network Connection Settings, yeah?!And My LW Tools>Options> Firewall Config> doesn't have Force IP. I've got a Listening Port Box & a Router Config box, both should be 6346? threadid=32282 didn't make out anything I could follow, you mean, I do steps 1to 9?!

Do you mean thread 32882? The author's way of expressing themselves leaves one having to concentrate very hard. lol :D

I'd have thought if you're using a proxy, then LW should be set up the same way. ie: Force IP & Sock v.5 But I don't know much about proxies. Since everything else has failed, it could be worth a try. I don't know how that'd affect/meet with the lan configuration. I'm not sure about the suggestion to switch back after connection as in the last couple of steps listed. If you can try it, then try the initial steps & if it works stick to it. If it has problems then next time use all 9 steps. (You can apparently get a program which will help set things up for you.)

I'll try setting up proxy for Socks v5, alon with having manual port forwarding in Firewall configuration for LW, but any suggestion on proxy/port to use? Something more simple than the No1 to 11 above on Socks? I, a lay, not make out from too much funda!? just give me some links to click on, some steps to execute please...

Follow the force ip instructions & proxy directions given earlier. Port 6346 would be best but not necessary. You can try other port no.'s like 6344 or 6342 or even ... scroll to the 1st post on the above link for force ip instructions & you'll find a link to alternative ports you can safely use. I don't know enough about proxy to give further advice. Follow NeOteric's links for findings a proxy no. & his instructions about what to type into the proxy box. I think you use the same port no. as the one that LW listens to under firewall settings.

I can't implement NeOteric's plan because my administartor tells me they won't open Socks port on Local Area Network connections. So, I go nowhere. I'm damned to use LW only on my dial up, I figure.
