I'm in for a long night, is there not a quick way of finding out which port will work for me?

Most firewalls will only affect uploading not downlding. So it's not so xtra important that you change it with every single port no. you try.

LW certainly can be. It's not so much LW as Java being not very memory efficient.

Some hints to reduce memory: Set your downlds for auto-clear. Get rid of search results that are a few hours old. Don't resume many files using the resume button (at least not many simultaneously.) Close any window you'e not using at that time (eg: Connections, Monitor, & Library windows) by using the View>Show/Hide. Reduce uploads to about 70 or 80%. Disabling Ultrapeer capabilities under Options>Speed will help. Keep LW hidden/minimised when you're not in front of computer. Let LW settle before using after opening. Don't use LW's media player whilst it's very busy. Perhaps use your default player instead.

* By the way, which port did you use to get LW to successfully to connect? This might help other people. It sounds like your isp has started to block ports generally used for p2p. They might have only applied it after they detected you were using p2p. ISP's can be very sneaky b/c they'll never tell you they've done this.

5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...)
9. Have you used LW successfully before or is this the 1st time?
10. Who is your ISP provider?

These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.
I'm having some fun with this....
1. OSX 10.3.9
2. Std OSX firewall + that on NetComm NB5 ADSL-2 modem router
3. 512Mb
4. 25Gb
5. broadband
6. refer 2
7. home
8. LW 4.8.1, Java 1.4.2_09
9. No I haven't used it succesfully before
10. www.iprimus.com.au

The error I get is that limewire tells me that either I'm not connected to the internet or behind a firewall.

Additional - I have tried www3.limewire.com:6346 - get a timeout error - If I try without the port number the page works fine. Another machine sitting on the network can access this page fine.

Have tried http://www.grc.com/port_6346.htm and it tells me that the port is open.

I have checked all the firewall options between the OSX firewall and the firewall on the modem and have them open on port 6346.

I am in the process of downloading to re-apply Security Update 2005-002 and LimeWire 4.9. I am also going to try sometime soon to put limewire on another machine on the network to try.

Is the updates likely to fix the problem for me, or is there something else that I have overlooked?

Thanks

pjay

Ok I don't know much if anything about the brand but if it has a switch to allow UPnP (universal plug & Play) then use it. Otherwise you'll need to forward a port. Most important point here is to set up a Static ip properly. This is where most people make errors. So make sure you get it right.

Steps:
1. Set up a static ip; http://www.sonic.net/support/ss/mac/osx_staticip/ use this purely as guide & dont follow all the suggestions as far as connect to sonic goes. Else look at pages 2/3 of the link in step 3.

2. Forward (open) port 6346: http://www.portforward.com/netcomm/nb5.htm

3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

BTW the recent security update also includes a java update which should be good!

Just something worth pointing out for Plusnet account holders. They dont specifically block ports to curtail the use of p2p.
They do use Ellacoyas which would not be fooled by a simple port change as per the experience above.

Therefore something worth checking is that you dont have the "Safe Surf" option set in your account preferences.
This is intended as a parental type control which can be configured by the main account holder at https://portal.plus.net/surf/

Port 6346 is one of the many ports that can be blocked using this setting.
