LimeWire is choking out my connection

I have followed your recommendations regarding the past problems that have been offered to remedy the problem. Yet, I'm still losing my LimeWire Connection, my Internet connection, and I can't "repair" my connection without rebooting my computer. I've had LimeWire for less than 48 hrs. and have been far from impressed.

Please help...

Still to no avail...

I have read through multiple threads, and have followed to a "T", but I'm still having dropped/lost connections. I still need some guidance or should I try to deinstall LW and try again from the very start?

Thanks again...

What type of connection do you have? If it's dial-up you better tell us.

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire

Make sure you know your connection speed. See here: http://www.broadbandreports.com/tools OR http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/ if you're not sure.

Try:
1. Set your speed appropriately (Tools>Options>Speed) & select which one applies to you. Tick Disable Ultrapeer Cap. & press Apply.
In LimeWire the speeds assigned as follows:

Modem/ISDN = 56 to 128 kbit/s (7-16 KB/s)
Cable/DSL = 350 to 999 kbit/s (44-125 KB/s)
T1 = 1 Mbit/s to 2.9 Mbit/s (125-360 KB/s)
T3 = 3 Mbit/s or more (350 KB/s up)

2. Reduce your uploads to 50-80% of your known & tested Upld speed (Tools>Options>Upld>Basic) & also set uplds for Autoclear & press Apply.

3. Reduce downlds to 75-90% of known & tested Downld speed (Tools>Options>Downlds) & also set dwnlds for Autoclear & press Apply.

4. Disable LW's media player (Tools>Options>Player) & untick & press Apply button.

5. (a) After opening LW let it settle for 10-20 mins before using. (b) Do not use the Resume/Find Sources on all your files to continue them (this has side-fx) (c) Don't select too many files to downld at one time.

Other info.

OK, you had asked if I was on a dial-up. I am not. My ISP is Chrater High speed connection with a 3meg speed.

I can't find my preferences folder through windows navigation, and the link that you offered:

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=32552

does not work. It asked me to notify Webmaster if the link failed, so that is what I am doing.

I have done the rest that you have recommended as far as the adjusting the upload and download speeds, disable Ultrapeer, and have disabled the media player.

I have also let it settle for 15-20 min and withhin 5-10 mins after the settling peiod, my connection gets choked out again.

Limewire Disconnections

When I started useing Limewire had no problems. Lately though as followed the information to wired router and Windows XP firewall.. Norton's Firewall and windows to execption of the ports for Limewire cause was getting dropped of the net.. with my hi-speed cable at near or over T1 bandwidth, so staying on would think to be fine.

Everything else works for staying connected as far programs just that Limewire drops after some minutes.. like 15-20 minutes.. so well aware of the choking and going from excellent and see as program winds down and disconnects me from online.. downloads halted and such with Limewire program..
I have had to disconnect from router and then connect.. and even have powered up the cable modem.. as using Roadrunner. Wondering as weather Service Pack 2 has been malfunctioning for Limewire also..
Meanwhile does spyware come about? Yes there is where Spybouncer picks up couple of infected it says of P2P networking things.. seems to be the magnets..
Hope to see that staying as on as much as I can happens and I get all the many more mp3's to enjoy as I have..
Thanks..

Limewire Disconnections 2

Even after a couple of minutes at times too. Is it the ultrapeers or what might send one off?

Lord of the Rings April 19th, 2005 05:03 AM

By the way as reported on a spyware forum, most don't work properly & some even have spyware themselves. Yes it most likely is the magnets causing the warnings. We'd recommend ad-ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ (FREE)

Spybot - Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html (FREE)

Peerguardian: http://peerguardian.methlabs.org/pg2.html (FREE)

I believe that Norton recommends against running 2 firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. I'd suggest you disable Win XP's firewall.

Some other things you can try (other than above hints) are:
1. Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue!
2. Share less files.
3. Leave LW to settle for 10-20 mins before using.
4. Don't use the Resume button on all incomplete files. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time.
5. When not actively using LW or not in front of computer then hide it in the background or in the task bar. Hiding in the background will result in LW using less resources.

6. Downld hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

Limewire Disconnections 3

As to the spyware magnets while Spybouncer catches them.. well I do run Spybot as well... Meanwhile been trying out varied peer to peer sharing programs.. and believe to feel to see as to stay with Limewire for the search results.. otherwise if disconnections keep happening with even the thread suggestions.. then I don't know.. Microsoft been resolving another issue with Windows Installer starting when moving a a simple pic or file.. anyway.. hope enough on the forum can share their advice and we all can benefit from that.

Disconnections

I don't know what gives with these disconnections using Limewire.. Seems to be the connections of the Ultrapeers and what to do about it.. When someone loses bandwidth or changes with new person that comes on it seems to think it disconnects me.. just when I am getting songs or going about searches.. It is frustrating.. The uploader-downloader slots by the way are at 6 although had it down as low as 2 also.. I have broadband cable with bandwidth just past T1 so don't know how come it gets this way with Limewire and what to do? Have tried anything I can think of to stay connected..

I have been having the same problems and am using Road runner. I ran for about 5 days with no problems and know it lets me download for about an hour and disconnects my whole internet. I believe this is being caused by Road Runner but not sure. Any suggestions.
