I'VE TRIED SOME OF THE SUGGESTIONS BUT I AM SOMEWHAT OF A NOVICE SO IM NOT SURE IM DOING IT RIGHT. IM ALSO GETTING AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT STATESLimeWire version 4.8.1 Pro Java version 1.5.0_02 from Sun Microsystems Inc. Windows XP v. 5.1 on x86 Free/total memory: 3253440/4128768 java.lang.RuntimeException: could not create preferences directory: C:\Documents and Settings\TRICIA\.limewire at com.limegroup.gnutella.util.CommonUtils.getUserSet tingsDir(CommonUtils.java:766) at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Initializer.initialize( Initializer.java:90) at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.GUILoader.load(GUILoade r.java:44) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Nativ e Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknow n Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Un known Source) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Unknown Source) at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.main(Main.java:31) STARTUP ERROR! AS FAR AS I KNOW WINDOWS FIREWALL IS DISABLED AND MY NORTON FIREWALL IS CONFIGURED TO ALLOW LIMEWIRE. CAN ANYONE HELP ME? THANKS |
Wise to only run Norton firewall. XP & Norton have been known to interfere with each other. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire If that doesn't fix things then try uninstalling Java & reinstalling it (but downld Java installer & save to computer, don't install over the net.) |
STILL CANNOT CONNECT THANKS FOR REPLYING, BUT I'VE TRIED BOTH OF THOSE THINGS AND STILL CANNOT CONNECT. ANY OTHER IDEAS? THANKS AGAIN |
Try starting from scratch then. 1. Double-check your Norton firewall. See Configuring Norton Internet Security 2. After opening LW wait 10 to 20 mins before using. Let it settle down 1st. 3. Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! * Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. Do you run on a network & if yes are there any other p2p programs used there on yours or other computers? (Even if you're not on a network.) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. Who is your isp provider? 10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. Quote:
(b) If Java was unable to access your preferences location, then perhaps it might be related to admin priviledges issue. The admin of the comp should install LW for you into your home account & give you permissions for use. If you are the admin of your computer, then perhaps you should uninstall LW & re-install it. To uninstall it, go to Start menu>Programs>Limewire>Uninstall. When you re-install LW, save the LW installer to your computer before installing it (also make a backup of the installer to an external device like CD-R/RW for ease of access later if needed.) |
