can't connect (like everyone else) i've been reading and following the connections posts for about 2 weeks, and while many people seem to have similar problems, none of the solutions suggested have worked so far for me. here's what i've got: i tried the test ( http://www3.limewire.com:6346/) and i always get a message saying "operation timed out when attempting to connect." it's never actually worked. 1. i'm running Windows XP2 2. i don't have windows firewall activated, but i do have ZoneAlarm, but I have allowed Limewire on it 3. 256mb ram 4. 11 GB available 5. wireless connection (cable modem) 6. Motorola WU830G 7. connecting from home 8. LW 4.9.23, java 1.5.0_03 9. time warner cable 10. there are 2 computers on our wireless network: my desktop and my roommate's laptop 11. i'm pretty experienced with limewire, i've used it for about 4 or 5 years with absolutely no connection problems, until i moved into my house and got the wireless connection. now it will say "connecting" forever, and then i get a message saying i have no active internet connection, although i'm online. i have also followed the instructions for firewall configuration to allow LW full access, but at the botton of the LW screen it says it detects a firewall. if someone could help me out i would really really appreciate it. i've been going crazy hearing new songs on the radio nd not being able to get them at home! thanks so much! :) |
Gnutella or port 6346 is blocked by your ISP. You could try setting the port to 10000 in options - advanced - firewall. If it doesn't work, the probably the only solution is using proxy... might aswell change ISP to another in your area. :( |
thanks for your reply. i changed the port to 10000 and that still didn't do anything. also, i've been with this ISP for over a year and never had a problem until i moved and got wireless instead of a regular cable connection. does this have something to do with a wireless connection instead of regular? i know it shouldn't, but i don't know what else to think. any other suggestions? |
This is no good. I can't find anything about your router and if it has a firewall on google... To do more troubleshooting, you'd have to connect direclty from the cable modem (via ethernet cable) and see how LW behaves. You could also see if the prob is specific to your machine by installing LW on your roomate to test. I don't believe anybody can help you more right now... The LW port test failure indicates 95% of the time that the ISP is the one responsible... |
Hi Guys Don't Know If This helps But for the modem http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...064&pfp=BROWSE Sgt |
Hi ajmugrl What zone alarm free or any of the others If You have the paid versions you could try going to firewall-custom-internet zone select high security zone Tick allow incoming UDP ports then type in 6346 in the bottom where it says enter port numbers and click apply Then do the same for allow outgoing UDP Ports Allow Incoming TCPorts Allow Outgoing TCP Ports Click apply, you should see 6346 beside all four click ok to close the custom screen Open limewire change the port backto 6346 Check the option to manual port forward instead of use pnp. And see if that works I Had To Manually Open The Ports In ZA Security Suite, before Limewire would work properly Hope This Helps Sgt |
When I try to connect ... I get a message saying it is either my firewall or loopback connections on the local machine is causing the problem. It also says- please allow limewire internet access and restart limewire. I can't connect - i tred setting the zone alarm witht he ports just like the above post - i can't open it. ii also set the limewire to question marks, but nothing helps. downloaded it last night and opened it up when i shut down the zona alarm. it won't even do that tonight. help?? |
thanks for your reply sgt. i actually uninstalled zone alarm yesterday after i posted, just out of curiousity to see if that would do anything, in case i didn't have the settings correct to allow LW. when i turned on my computer this morning, i even got a message saying my computer has no firewalls. however, LW still somehow detects one when i tried to start it a few minutes ago. i also don't understand how the ISP could be the one responsible if i've been with them for over a year and just in the past month have not been able to connect to LW. if no one thinks that this can be fixed, can someone please recommend another file sharing program? i really don't want to give up LW, but it's starting to look like i might have to. i've already tried winmx, kazaa lite, and ares, but have had the same problem with all of them as well... |
Hi ajmugrl I'm so sorry I could not get in touch before But I've had troubles with my own computer which I'm getting sorted (by myself) If you still want help keep posting where you are now and look out for Sgt which is my handle Sgt |
thanks for your reply sgt - sorry to hear about your computer troubles, i know what a pain that is... hope you get everything straightened out. everything's pretty much the same since my last post. i still have ZoneAlarm uninstalled, so that's not an issue anymore, and i don't have windows firewall on either. when i turn my computer on it warns me that i have no active firewall; yet, when i start limewire it says it detects a firewall and won't connect. i was thinking about calling my isp this week and asking if they are blocking limewire. other than that, i don't know what else to do... |
ajmugrl The Motorola WU830G is a wireless adapter where are you getting you wireless signal from. Do you have a wireless router or is your ISP providing a wireless signal. |
Hi ajmugrl Yes getting the computer problems sorted, seems it's not just the computer, but all electrical equipment, so talked to the neighbours, their having the same problem, so seems something is interfering with the signals in the area I agree with what Grandpa said about your wireless connection also check with the ISP and see if their now blocking Limewire Sgt |
One other thing re-install ZA, then update it and set the ports like I said, do not go onto the Internet without protection, Also make sure your virus protection is upto date and do a virus scan after you have Re-installed ZA Also check for spyware Sgt |
my wireless router is a motorola SBG900. i also reinstalled ZoneAlarm today, but i get the free version, and there's no place to set the ports. i can select the high security zone, but other than that, the only thing i can do is "allow outgoing DNS/CHSP in Trusted and Internet Zones on High Setting" - i don't know if that's the same thing or something completely different. i allowed limwire to access the internet and act as a server for zonealarm, so there's all green checks by it now. i did a virus scan and checked for spyware after i reinstalled ZA, and had no viruses and got rid of the spyware that was on my computer. somehow, limewire is still detecting that pesky firewall that just doesn't exist... i plan on calling my ISP tomorrow to ask if they are blocking it (i couldn't call today because of the holiday). i'll let you know what they say... thanks for sticking with me, i know this is a pain!! |
ajmugrl Follow the instructions in the link below for port fowarding your router. Make sure you do step 1 and set up a static IP adress first http://portforward.com/motorola/sbg9...forwarding.htm |
Hi ajmugrl Grandpa is right, just going to suggest that myself. And No It is not a pain trying to help you, Some People have Knowledge Of Computers, Some Don't. The People that do try to help The free version Of Za is good, but If you can try and get the paid it's a lot better. Sgt |
i followed the directions to port forward the router after i set up a static IP address, but once i did that, my internet stopped working completely. my AOL instant messaging cut off and i couldn't get on internet explorer or e-mail. i'm pretty sure i did it right, because i called and asked my brother about it while i was setting it up (his profession is computers, but he doesn't know anything about LW which is why i have to bother you guys instead of him - sorry!) is this a huge problem? i haven't been able to call my isp yet, i've just got a million things to do lately for work and school. usually by the time i get home, they're closed for the day. but it's on my list and i'll do it as soon as i possibly can. i'll let you know as soon as i find out from them... |
I see you use AOL. I do not know about you Motorola but I use to have AOL and AOL is PPoE I remember on my Linksys there were extra steps I had to take to set it up for AOL. You can call AOL and they can tell you if you need to take any extra steps with your Router. |
sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys. i finally called my ISP and they claimed to not be blocking Limewire, or any other file sharing program for that matter. they started to suggest firewall issues, but you guys already suggested just about everything i think. i don't actually use AOL, i just have AIM downloaded. i use roadrunner, from time warner cable. i changed all the settings back to what they originally were before i port forwarded my router, since doing that stopped my internet from working. is there anything else i can try that you can think of? |
Check out the link below it is a link to a forum on routers it might help and they may be able to help with your problem there but you will have to register to be able to post in it. http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cg...num=1113510772 |
