Major help needed with 4.9

I recently upgraded Limewire from 4.8 to 4.9. Limwire is the only p2p that I use and I love it. However, after I upgraded I noticed that I would occassionally be unable to connect to the internet. Neither one of my browsers would connect to any site, but Limwire 4.9 would continue to run. I also do not lost my internet connection, it is just fine. The new version of Limewire is java based, so I reinstalled java and firefox but the problem persisted. I began to cruise Limwire's support forums to find that dozens of others were having the same problem but there are no answers as of yet. I uninstalled Limewire, but if my computer sits for a period of time w/o use, the browsers will not connect again. However, if i restart they work just fine again. I am completely at a loss as to what happened. It doesn't seem to be a big problem as much as a minor annoyance I'd like to remedy.Limewire has offered no solution, and none of the few suggestions others have made in the forums have made any difference. I have all updates and patches for my system. I run Norton Av 2004, Zone Alarm pro version 6,firefox, IE6, and xp sp2. If anyone can offer up any answers or suggestions I would be incredibely grateful.

i don't know whether i'm having the same probs but it sounds rather similar...
After upgrading my java programme (as prompted), my limewire, which is of the latest version, 4.9.28, won't seem to run properly. The icon is still present in the system tray and i'll see the icon as well in my taskbar but when i click on it, nothing pops up; ie: no screen showing my downloads, etc. Why is this so?
i tried emailing the above paragraph to them under bug reports, but my mail just kept on returning, much to my annoyance... anyway... argh... i'd like my limewire running again.
someone help pls

Had The same problem till I personally opened up the ports in the firewall section myself

i actually found ot what the problem is. the new version is opening up mukltiple tcp/ip connections. windows xp has set a limit on the amount that can be opened for security purposes so your firewall shuts down your access once the limit is reached. its a major glitch that they should have caught and offered a fix for by now.

Hi jrme15

I Know about the limit for windows Xp which limits you to 10 consecutive connections, but I have opened these to 50

Hi oblivionrokz

uninstall your old java

Then goto www.java.com and install the new version
choose manual download and install yourself

Then re-boot the computer

hey sgt.... how did you go about doing that. i have yet to look into it. i run xp sp 2 by the way. is there any danger in doing this? i dont think there would be.

oblivionrokz September 6th, 2005 01:45 AM

i re installed the java application... but limewire still won't run properly

Sgt September 6th, 2005 03:23 AM

Hi jrme15

Goto

http://mitglied.lycos.de/lvllord/download-mirror.htm

download the zip file
exctract to where you want
double click on the exe
A dos box will pop up asking are you sure Press Y
it will now replace the file in question
re-boot for it to take effect
You will then have 50 connections instead of 10

there is no security risk I've found so far, as long as you have a good Firewall.

I have also found no probs with the computer or the Internet
It's Upto You

oh yeah, i reinstalled limewire as well.
help pls

Sgt September 7th, 2005 06:44 AM

Hi oblivionrokz

Do you still have the old ver

uninstall the new ver

Re-install the old ver see if that works

A lot of people are having probs with the new ver

keep the old ver till you get a new ver that works for you

If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It

how does that link help, the old version isnt on it. if you try to install something from limewire itself it automatically installs the new version.

Tonight I tried to use an older free version of LimeWire, several actually, and can't get any of them to work now. I have all the latest updates, upgrades, patches etc...Still can't connect. I've used Limewire for several years and never any problems. I downloaded Pro version 4.9.11 around the 1st of August and it worked fine up until about the 20th of August. I then downloaded the upgrade to 4.9.28, thinking maybe that's what I needed, but still cannot connect. Windows firewall is disabled and I'm running Zone Alarm Pro 6.0, which I've run with Limewire previously without any problems. I'm at a loss...lol

When I contacted LimeWire support all they told me was that the purchase of the limewire software didn't gaurantee a connection to the Gnutella network. She had me do a port test at the grc.com website (shields up) which I had already done. I reported back some info they asked for and haven't heard from them since. Basically being ignored as far as I can tell.

go to www.oldversion.com , and you can find older versions of Limewire. They are the free versions though not PRO.

Lord of the Rings September 8th, 2005 09:31 PM

Which earlier versions did you try?

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
3. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
4. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
5. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
6. Who is your isp provider?
7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
8. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

Indigenous September 8th, 2005 10:02 PM

I tried 4.0 and a couple others toward the bottom of the list at oldversion.com. I deleted the .limwire folder in documents and settings each time.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? Windows XP Home Edition w/sp2

2. Connection type? Fixed base wireless/broadband

3. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? No Modem or rounter. ORiNOCO PC Card (5 volt) manufactured by Lucent Technologies. Not sure on model #.

4. Where are you trying to connect from? Connecting from home.

5. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? LimeWire 4.9.28 PRO / Java 1.5.0_04

6. Who is your isp provider? Netride

7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No.

8. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. Test Worked...

At www.grc.com I also performed a test on port 4346. The port was closed when limewire was inactive and open when limewire was trying to connect. The message I get from limewire tells me that my computer doesn't have an internet connection or is being blocked by a firewall, even when my firewall is off. The little globe icon next to the connection status shows a wall in front of it. There have been a couple of ocassions where I made connection all the way to 'turbo charged' but the connection deteriorated after only a few minutes. But on my last several attempt I haven't even gotten up to poor...lol

By the way....Thanks for for your responce and assistance!

Lord of the Rings September 8th, 2005 10:20 PM

Yep the grc port test will only work when the program you're testing is open. A bit odd!
Well most wireless devices use NAT firewalls. The question is whether yours supports UPnP (Universal Plug & play.) Do you know?
But apparently the LW 4.9 series hasn't performed as well with UPnP as 4.3-4.8.1 did.

BTW have you tried a different port. Go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change listening port to another. You could try these: 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 80, 20282, 10000, 443, 40475.

Change the port, press apply, make sure you're disconnected, or else, go to File>Disconnect, wait a minute or 2, then go File>Connect. Even re-opening LW might be better.

Indigenous September 8th, 2005 10:50 PM

I contacted my ISP and asked if they were blocking for filtering p2p applications etc. I know the people that run the service personally and they said there shouldn't be anything on their end to keep me from connecting. They are looking into it. One of the technicians said he was also having trouble with limewire, but just hadn't really had time to explore it.

I'll try the other ports to see what happens, and will report back later.

Thanks alot for your time and assistance, it's much appreciated!

Indigenous September 8th, 2005 11:23 PM

Well that didn't do anything either. I have a couple of co-workers that use limewire as well. I'll check with them and see if they have an earlier version of PRO, or if they've had problems or have any solutions. If you have any other suggestions I'm open to them. Hopefully limewire will get another version out soon that will take care of these connectivity issues. I MISS MY LIMEWIRE!!!! hehehe....Thanks again Bro!

oblivionrokz September 9th, 2005 05:27 AM

so it's not the java's fault? i'll try the reinstalling later... rather tired of un-installing then re-installing at the moment... frustrating

Indigenous September 9th, 2005 04:48 PM

Has anyone tried the 4.9.29 yet?
