Default Strange Connection problems, help plz

Basically myself and 3 housemates at uni have just got ourselfs a 2mb adsl line...split 4 ways to 4 pcs..

Internet comes in goes to a BT Voyager 205 Modem...Then to a Netgear WGT624 Router...then out via 3 cables and 1 wireless network to our pcs.

2 People seem to be able to use limewire ok without any problems occuring however when myself and the guy whos on the wireless connection (doubt its related) start up limewire we all get dissconnected from the internet.

On the Voyager modem page the connection is still active and never goes down.

If i'm doing ping google.co.uk -t the pings stop at EXACTLY the same time limewire starts/does a search.

Now i've checked with my isp (Plusnet UK based adsl provider) and they say that they do not limit any ports except 137 and 445 for virus purposes....

I've checked the router and the firewall is turned off and on the modem also...there shouldn't be anything limiting it at all...both the problems are on PCs that have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 on them. The others are different XP Home i think.

From my point of view its either A) Router problem blocking a port some how or B) Problems on our PCs

Does anybody have any suggestions? read the guides on here and i can't find anything similar really pissing us all off will be very greatful for any help

cheers

Salut mec, it is highly probable that your router can't handle more than 3 persons at any time on LW.... This is sad but probable. Did you do an upgrade of the router firmware? That might help a little. Otherwise, I highly doubt the modem is the bottleneck and you might want to check the "Disable ultrapair capacity" in the Options -> Speed of all your 4 LW, because being an UP makes more connections and higher the possibilities of hardware failure (router).

This is obviously not a firewall related problem. Must be the router.

Ciao et bonne chance

Try capping the bandwidth for uploads/downloads on all the computers. The fact that four computers are running limwire might be squeezing the bandwidth available out. That is if everyone is willing to share, and don't mind somewhat slower downloads.

Not sure if I'm reading correctly, but I'm not talking about just limiting the # of downloads. Under options, there are the sections that limit the bandwidth used for downloads, and another that limits bandwidth used for uploads. Try limiting those on all of the computers and see if that works. Also, limit the number of UL's and DL's allowed will help as well.
