!!Solution!! to LW Problems!! If you are not able to connect to LW then try the following: Uninstall LimeWire. Then Uninstall Java. Download the latest versions of both the softwares i.e. 4.9.30 and 1.5!! Manually delete the .Limewire preferrence folder! Install Java 1.5 first and RESTART! Install LimeWire 4.9.30/Pro and again Restart!! Disable any other Firewall software tht u have and keep only Windows XP SP2 Firewall ON!! LimeWire will start working with highest possible speed i.e. excellent / Turbo-Charged for Pro!!! This worked for me since Norton Internet Security's Firewall was blocking LW even when I had given 'Permit ALL' to it!! Dont forget to RESTART!! GOOD LUCK!! |
I tried disabling Windows XP SP2 firewall and enabling Norton Personal Firewall and LimeWire was still working properly!! So cant understand what the earlier problem was but everything is fine by just reinstalling / reseting the softwares and settings!! |
It was probably updating the java that did the trick. |
Could be the Java only!! But I had the same version before and after so like I said couldnt get to the core of the problem!! Anyway its working just fine with Norton and I got to say the new version 4.9.30 is just quicker and reliable than the earlier one's!! |
Followed your instructions to a 'T' but still won't connect. I've been using LW for ages but since I upgraded to 4.3.29 it won't connect. I've got a laptop that I can connect with that I still haven't upgraded. Any other suggestions? |
See u need to only follow my instructions if ur using Windows XP SP2 and Norton Internet Security 2005 !! LimeWire 4.9.30 is really working fine for me even with NIS 2005 and I got to say its much faster and reliable than any versions before!! Reset all ur NIS 05 setting and LW preferrences and Java!! If its a firewall problem then its gotta work my way!! |
warreng We are going to need a little more info here it will help us to figure out what your problem is. Can you give us a total description of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dial up, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. Who is your isp provider? 10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. 11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is. * Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml 12. Do This test, Is the result True/False? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...757#post103757 Is the result True/False? Panzer Unfortunately there can be allot of different things that can be causing the problem other than what fixed your problem. The fix you posted has been known for a long time and is one of the fixes that works for bad install which is a problem that occasionally occurs. But there are allot of other causes routers, port settings, port forwarding, etc. IE that is not the only fix for a connection problem. |
Thts wht I said Grandpa, I meant if u are using same system and configuration as I do then only it may work my way!! My problem was unusual though!! LimeWire wasnt working even when I had all the right setting on NIS 05 plus had the latest versions of LW and Java!! Reinstalling the same thing again and it starts working is unusual!! Plus Warreng has posted some "4.3.29" version of LW so cant understand which ver his talking about!! Guys must give their whole configuration while posting problems!! |
Help out guys!! Firewall detected again! LimeWire says a Firewall has been detected!! I have configured Norton Personal Firewall 05 to 'Permit ALL' to LW but no use, the new version 4.9.30 Pro is just showing Firewall detected and then a message opens to tell tht 'the machine doesn't have a internet connection or is blocked by a firewall' This time my earlier solution to the firewall detected problem is not working!! PLS HELP Again!! My PC Details: 1) Intel P4 1.8GHz 2) RAM : 512MB 3) HD Free Space: 14GB 4) Connection: Cable 128 Kbps (Not Shared) 5) Place : Home 6) OS: Windows XP SP2 (Windows Firewall disabled) 7) Firewall: Norton Internet Security 2005 8) LimeWire and Java Versions: 4.9.30 Pro and 1.5 9) No other P2P sharing program 10)I did the simple test http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ and got 'Your Test Worked' as result 11)I did the other test too for the Bug report got a 'False' answer! |
Panzer Check out the threads below they might help http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=46350 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=46299 |
I performed the instructions in the above links 4-5 times but no use !! One thing I noticed Grandpa tht the port number 6346 (in Listen to Port < Firewall options) keeps changing to some other ports whenever I start LimeWire 4.9.30 Pro!! Cant understand why tht keeps changing!! How to keep tht stable to 6346?? Anyway even if I make it to 6346 it still doesnt connect! There is no ISP blocking problem here as I checked with them and know them since long! Infact their own offices use file-sharing softs!! Pls! Help! I turned off both firewalls (Windows and NIS 2005) but LimeWire still says 'Firewall detected'. |
NEWS FLASH - I turned on my Zone Alarm and Limewire works now. UPDATE TO POST, BELOW. I TURNED ON ZONE ALARM (BECAUSE LIMEWIRE WORKED PREVIOUSLY WHILE I RAN ZONE ALARM) AND LIMEWIRE WORKS NOW. GO FIGURE. I have tried all of your suggestions. Dumped Limewire Basic and Java 1.5. Reinstalled Java 1.5. Restarted. Reinstalled Limewire Basic. Restarted. Still, Limewire says it can't start because of Firewall problems. I also updated my network connections to allow for open Gnutella ports (6346 for UDP & TCP). I connect via Time Warner Cable's Road Runner ISP. I am running Windows XP. I use a Linksys router and am running the XP System 2 firewall as well as Norton Utilities. I tried shutting both firewalls down. I have opened ports within my router's "applications and gaming" settings. NOTHING is working. Please help. |
1 Attachment(s) Panzer You may need to manual port forward UPnP is changing you listening port because it is blocked. Make sure NIS is properly configured to give LimeWire access. |
I have done tht but no use! I dont hav a modem or a router. I get internet directly through cable wire tht goes into my LAN card! Then I have to dial through LAN to get internet access! I dont know wht this type of connection is called, its like dial-up but through LAN which verifies username and password and connects in couple of seconds! Anyway I hav unistalled NIS 2005 frm my PC, disabled Windows Firewall, Reinstalled Java, reinstalled LW 4.9.30 Pro , but with no use, LW still detects some kind of firewall!! I hav also updated Windows XP SP2 to the latest updates available , removed all junk frm my PC , removed all kinds of invalid registry values through registry cleaners even defragmented HDD for a change but no use! Now the Listen to Port stay on 6346 since I switched to Manual Port Forward but nothings changed!! I havn't tried to new LW 4.9.33 but will give it a try!! The only thing I havn't done is formated my HDD!! Which will be the last option to try! Pls keep helping!! Ur suggestions are most welcomed! |
From the description of how you connect I am guessing you live in a apartment complex and it sounds like your ISP is a PPoE service. If you are in a apartment I believe there should be a router where the trunk line is split to provide service to the different units. I really am not sure about this but if there is a router some where it could have a NAT firewall in it. And if there has been any complaints about slow Internet service where you live they could have blocked file sharing ports. You may want to try some different ports. I have read where some people are having some success on port 80. |
I tried many other ports including port 80 (which by the way is used by Google Earth Pro to connect) but no use?? Google Earth Pro works perfectly on port 80!! Still to try the new version!! U guessed it right Grandpa tht my internet connection is a PPPoE service! And I found some kind of machine on the top of my building which distributed cable wires to subscribed customers!! Couldn't see wht it was since it was closed in a locked box!! Keep sending inputs!! Thank U! |
Hey Grandpa/Panzer, I have a connection with a PPPoE service as well - with a router/switch in a secured box placed on the top of my building. Every apartment's ethernet cable line is branched from this box. I called up my ISP - they say they do not touch ports above Port# 2000. Thus GNUtella being 43xx is untouched by them. They also said they do not use any bandwidth limiters or bandwidth shapers to shape traffic on these ports or any ports - they only use of limiters was to limit speeds to suibscribers as per their subscription. But they also said that service to the end users in the city was distributed/managed/controlled by the city's cable operators. And that my subscription/service was managed/controlled by them. They said that though they do not limit/shape bandwith, certain cable operators are at the discretion to control and manage their own traffic by using limiters or shapers - or by controlling Ports. My cable operator - the one who has put the router on my building top has also said that they do not block any ports - but did mention that Kazaa is limited during the daytime and is completely opened in the nights. Kazaa however used a different port than GNUtella - and logically therefore, GNUtella should be coming thru. Also, test for 6346 give me a Your test worked! answer. So now we're wondering where could the problem possible lie. Something in that router perhaps? Like Panzer, I also noticed that my Listening port is not 4346 - but is 34979 (I swear it was 11xxx the last time I checked). Question at this point: Does the listening port HAVE TO BE set at 4346? Can't it be something else? Panzer, I'd like you to try the listening port at 34979. If that doesn't work, then have you tried it at 6346 itsef? I dont know how changing a listening port can do the trick - but perhaps it's worth a shot! Try it and let us know. As for me, I'm still stuck with my problems.... Regards, AG ag101 |
Typing error - GNUtella is 6346 (and 6347) - NOT 4346 as typed above. My apologies for the typing error. |
Hey guys the new version LW 4.9.33 is connecting, but only it fair connection! Its just not going above 'Fair'! Ag101, I tried ur suggestion too! And may be because of tht I am atleast getting 'Fair' connection! It may be because of ur trick or LW 4.9.33!! I tried ur trick 4-5 times but could only manage till 'Fair'. I am able to use port 6346 for getting Fair connection! Other ports like 80, 11xxx etc are also giving Fair connection! So pls help me restore to full connection !! Do u want any more details?? Yeh and one more thing, LimeWire 4.9.33 for the first time says 'LimeWire has not detected a firewall' which is good news but partial connection is not enough!! So need more help pls! Thank U for the inputs! |

I'm not sure why anybody's port no. within LW should change from one occasion to the next. I've heard of other people having issues in apartments where there's shared connections. And as Grandpa said, there's probably a NAT firewall within the main router. I guess you could ask the landlord if they could open port 6346. I wonder also if, with everybody sharing the one connection, whether the connection gets a bit strained at times. There's so many possibilities. Such as an unreliable router losing packets. Also, the isp provider might also be filtering/shaping against p2p sharing. It would be helpful if you could find out who the isp (internet service provider) is. |
ISP Blocking LW Hey guys !! U were all right tht my ISP might be blocking/regulating P2P ports or using file-sharing detecting software to detect LW!! For a change I just tried to connect through dial-up internet and to my suprise LimeWire immediately connected at Turbo-charged speed! So my PC setting are all optimum! Its only ISP blocking problem here!! So we hav a clear idea of my problem! Pls suggest something to get through, so I can connect to LW at perfect speed through my Cable connection(PPPOE connection). The ISP guys are denying tht they ever block any port or P2P software!! But I sense they are clearly lying! I know nothing about Proxy setting and modem/router configurations!! So PLS HELPPPPPP.................!! |
Panzer I have a feeling it might be your apartment complex that is doing the blocking. If they have been getting complaints about slow Internet from other users in the complex they may have blocked P2P networks. I have known of this happening before in apartment complexes. You best option is to try setting LimeWire for different ports until you hopefully find one that works. Someone may know of another way but I do not since you do not have access to the router. |
Hi Panzer, Guess you're correct when you're saying you're complex's operator is probably blocking p2p ports... I have the very same situation. I got a cable connection using PPPoE - I have to connect via a dialer software - and that seems to be the problem. For a few hours some days back, my PC created a strange new connection that would connect my computer to the internet automatically -WITHOUT me having to login. When this happened, LW would connect at full speeds. When I tried loging in through the dialer, LW was unable to connect. I logged off and tried using the connection my PC had created. And LW instantly connected again - at full speed. I hadn't even changed the ISP. It was the same ISP. Only once without their provided dialer. So it had to be the dialer software itself. Either that - or that connection which my PC automatically created was able to bypass all the ISP networks and firewalls and directly connect to the internet. I'm sad cause - as mysteriously as the connection was created, it also vanished. LW will not conncet as long as I am using the dialer software and a login process to connnect to the internet. Panzer, your PC settings are absolutely normal and I therefore say better not tamper with the PC/network settings. I guess your only solution is to connect to the internet through some other ISP. Regards, AG. P.S. If anyone has any idea how my PC created this new network connection (classified as Internet Gateway) the please let us know. |
Got LW to work again mates!! My LimeWire works again!! I had to just call the cable operater ,who I know for a decade and a half, and tell him to unblock GNUtella network ports!! He told me the ISP had told him to block the ports without giving any notice to subscribers so he had blocked it!! But since the blocking was under his control I could pursue him to open ports in the router on my building! So LW works perfectly with Turbo-Charged speeds!! The ISP keeps lying about they not blocking P2P ports but then mostly everything lies with cable operator, so he is the one u hav to go after!! Special Thanx to Grandpa, Ag101 and LOTR for letting me know the exact nature of my problem with ur suggestions!! Thank U!! |
Your a genius...updating java fixed my connection problem...I have windows xp, and did a windows update this am...after that my lw wouldn't connect...didn't think this would make a difference but had nothing to lose..updated to the newest java version and I'm back in bidness...Thanks for your post.. Steve |
