recommended settings for.....ugh....dial-up

was wonderin about what to put in options as to optimal performance for ....dial-up....like say how many simultaneous d/ls....i put 117 , also tried 7 didnt seem to matter , but was thinkin some veterans may recommend specific checkmarks or not. so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. oh while im here um whats up with browsing the hosts? and sometimes get a steady 3-5 bars......but a good amount of time stays on the 1 bar...and odd when all bars red still says few d/ls are downloadin, hmmmm
