Default "detected a firewall" when I don't have one

Hi all,
LW has detected a firewall on my PC even when I have none.

I have WinXP+SP2 with the firewall (and the whole Security Centre) turned off. No firewall software (or even an antivirus) has been installed (other than WinXP's native firewall) - as I hard formatted my disk and reinstalled (clean installed) everything a month back.

Limewire worked fine all this while - and suddenly refuses to connect saying a firewall has been detected. The firewall icon appears at the bottom-left corner of the program window. I double checked to see if Windows firewall had somehow started itself. It's turned off!

My TCPIP connection is patched (to allow 100 connnections). I was on uPnP - but have also manually tried forwarding on port 6346. No use. Manually added 6346 in TCP and UDP - two seperate services - one for TCP and one for UDP. I am directly connected to the internet - No router or firewall.

Uninstalled Limwire. Ran the .jar file. Clean installed again. Still no connection. Limewire would classify my connectin as Turbocharged but now it only says Starting Connection.

LimeWire has just plain suddenly stopped connecting. Any ideas what could be happening? Why is LimeWire detecting a firewall? What firewall is it detecting anyway? I have only SP2's firewall! That too, turned off.

Tried everything in the forums. Does anyone have any clues what's happening?

Thank you all.
AG

Any way to check if the firewall is outside your box? Like with the ISP?

Other than that and deleting the limewire prefs, I have no clue. Sorry

I wonder if you have caught a virus which is manifesting itself as a firewall to LW?

You should run an online scan to find out.

Strong reasons to believe I have no virus on my machine - even though I have absolute zero protection.
One - just formatted the PC (some weeks back)
Two - been with my ISP long enough to know that there aint no viruses coming thru (though past performance isn't exactly future guarantee)
Three - Have access to the best of the best antivirus programs and antispyware programs (None have ever detected any virus on my PC)

I pretty much rule out the possibility of a virus - With the protection I (usually) have on my PC, it's virtually impossible for any virus to get in. I must also admit, being totally naked, I could've been infected the in last two days - and only a scan will determine for sure. But generally, my system seems top gun! Including my internet connection.

I may have come across a "possible cause" - My internet service itself !!! And this maybe - just maybe the very problem many others are facing. Strange thing to explain though.

I use a cable internet service - 24/7 online - though the speed is only 48kbps (or 6kBps) - I am able to get online, surf the internet, download using download managers, and generally use everything on the net - at a very constant and dependable speed of about 45kbps.

However, since yesterday evening LimeWire (and since LimeWire started giving problems, Shareazaa too) is unable to connect (or takes minutes to connect). Download speeds (if any) are down to less than 1KBps. It would appear as though my ISP is blocking P2Ps.

However, I have been on two ISPs for 5 years and so I know very well that none of them bother to block P2Ps (or any other appz). This problem of not being able to connect (or establish a strong connection) has only begun since yesterday - and I did check with another user on my same ISP - he's facing this same issue. His browser and other programs run fine - using max. bandwith possible. But LimeWire is unable to establish a connection.

Rather than instantly pointing fingers at the ISPs, I think it would be wiser to learn what is happening here - and what is causing LimeWire to behave so. My ISP has been having connectivity issues of late - which were causing an extreme dip is connection speeds and also frequent disconnects. However, LimeWire would connect to the network in an instant without any errors (and go full 5 bars). Downloading would occur the minute I queue a file for download - and would utilize max possible bandwith. But his problems seemed to resolve yesterday, giving my my actual line speed maxed and the disconnections too have stopped. At this same time, LimeWire has ceased to connect to the network - thinks it's behind some firewall - and even when I have max connectivity, fails to connect (shows only one or two bars!!)

Something tells me this internet connection of mine is what's bothering LimeWire - and other users out there. I am not sure what exactly about the connection is bothering LimeWire - is it some "quality" or the speed or what?

Any ideas?

Regards, AG

Definitely NOT the internet speed. LimeWire was excellent even when my speed was a pathetic 1KBps. Even when my service was so intermittent, LimeWire would connect in a jiffy. I conclude LimeWire is built to work on the slowest of slowest speeds - great work guys! Good job done!

So it must be something else about the internet connection that's getting everyone so many connection issues. If only the engineers would figure what is it exactly that LimeWire is looking for in an internet connection....

Your idea makes reasonable sense to me, ( I say reasonable as I have never had this problem, but I've seen enough other posts to know there is a problem here that is not, I think, being addressed.)

Recent R&D>>> Updated my Operating System & Java

Previous Enironment: WinXP Pro updated only with SP2 - No further Windows XP updates since SP2. Windows auto update service turned off. So no updates since SP2. Java version was J2RE v1.4.2. Windows XP Firewall never ever enabled. Firewall was turned off. Ports were untouched/unaltered. No other firewall/antivirus installed on the PC.

LimeWire worked great - until one day, it suddenly stopped connecting. The only factor that changed was my ISP 'repaired' his poor speeds and constant disconnection problem. Now I have a connection that disconnects just once or twice in 24 hours. Speeds are 45-48kbps and amazingly constant. But LimeWire stopped connecting about the time the internet line was 'repaired".

Cannot say the the ISP is blocking Port 6xxx -whatever because Shareazaa is using that same port and is able to download/upload files.

Just Updated Environment: WinXP Pro + Sp2 has been updated with all updates till June2005 (using AutoPatcher XP). J2SE 1.5 is currently installed instead of the older v1.4.2. Prior to updating, LimeWire was fully uninstalled - including deleting the Settings folder. Java was completely uninstalled and PC rebooted - so that the new Java has no conflicts with the older version.

LimeWire still does not connect easily - Still thinks it's behind a firewall - Still says Need more sources!!! Even with a brand new environment and even with the latest Java change, LimeWire is not working. Windows firewall is turned on (by default after the update). After a while, LimeWire may manage to establish a connection - the offer you results for what you search - but will not download anything you select to download.

Now I turn off the Windows firewall. Quit LW and restart it. I find that LW connects though not very well. Not much of a difference. If any, I am getting 4/5 bars. Still cannot download files that get queued.

Any ideas what's going on?

Those with problems may try the same thing I did.
Uninstall Java completely - and then uninstall Limewire completely.
Make sure you remove the settings folder too.
Then reboot - Be sure to reboot the PC.
Now get yourself all the Windows updates. Make sure you are upto date. Update your antivirus/firewalls too.
Get a brand new version of LimeWire. Try a new version. Maybe it'll work for you!
Reinstall Java 1.5 first - then install LimeWire.
Before you begin the program, turn off your firewall - or configure it correctly so as to allow LW full access.

Let us know if that worked for you. If you post back, perhaps others may benefit.

Tried disconnecting and reconnecting several times over - to see if the connection problem has been eliminated.

Seems like it has! Joy Oh Joy!! LimeWire establishes a connection everytime I start it. In a few seconds!!!
This could also be a temporary burst in performance of my ISP. Only days of testing will tell perhaps, if the uninstallation, reinstallations and updating did the trick!

Now if only we could solve the download/upload issue. Off to the Download/Upload forums for now!!! See ya there!

Regards, AG

Default I think this is the reason.

Your internet provider has probably noticed the large amount of information being passed back and forth. I have been cut off twice with 2 different service providers, and have yet to find a way around it. the firewall that limewire detects is their's and not on your computer. Good luck with it.

I don't think ag101 is still waiting for help...their thread's more than 2 years old

If you think your ISP's to blame for not being able to connect to the network, you could try changing ports. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 65000 (or any port in the range of 49152 - 65535) > apply > ok.
Also try using LW outside of your ISP's peak hours.

Otherwise, you could give us your system details...maybe there's a firewall within a modem/router that's causing trouble?
