Connection Problems after a year or so

I have been using Kazza forever, and for about a year or so have been using LimeWire. About a week ago I am suddenly not bale to use any P2P software. It can never connect.

I have DSL,
It cant be my ISP, I dont think cuz my friend with the same ISP can connect.
The webpage that says "The Test Worked" comes up everytime i press the link.
It doesnt work on either of my computers and I completely reformated one.
Tried portfowarding.
Also somtimes it conencts but the bar only goes up 3, which is your connection is getting stronger, but as soon as I try to search it disconnects.

WHAT IS GOING ON?

THANKS

Download Spybot and Ad-aware to clean out the spyware that Kazza left in your computer.

you said reformat which it didnt mean the spyware is gone. reformat just copy your partation and use the copied partation, which spyware still can be there, just download it and scan it. it not going to hurt you, you will be surpised how much spyware you got in your computer while you surfing the net

I ran a spysweeper and it didnt even find any spyware :-\ and I immunized it and everything... Now what?

It actually starts up and the connections gets to about good and then disconnects completely and it keeps doing that.

Still nothing. It sometimes connects and then when i try to search it just dissconnects it self. I've tried port forwarding, All i did was upgrade my limewire and it stopped connecting and now i cant connect with any P2p programs.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.)

Linksys routers are 'generally' quite reliable. They can utilise UPnP which allows LW to communicate directly with the router to open a port. That's if your firmware is up to date though I guess.

Windows XP has it's own firewall. You shouldn't run without any firewall. The best thing is to configure it to allow LW full access; Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? If you can connect at all, then I suspect this test should be fine. Unless you have device problems I suppose.

Check to make sure you don't have an AV or spyware, etc. utility program that requires net programs to be cleared/permission to operate. Some do apparently.

Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Speed & tick to disable Ultrapeer capabilities & press apply.

the test worked ill try configuring the firewall however.

I edited in a couple of late comments in my last post. Also perhaps this might be beneficial: http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools That's if you have SP2

FireStormZX November 4th, 2005 08:56 AM

i have both configured the windows firewall and disabled Ultra Peer capabillities. I also ran the patch. I am going to restart my compter now.

Still no luck :( I do not believe its my ISP because my friend who uses the same Modem, ISP, and Router has limewire working fine, And i have spybot and frequently delete all the spyware.

Lord of the Rings November 4th, 2005 09:36 AM

If no p2p programs work then it sounds suspiciously like the isp. It's not uncommon for isp's to only filter/block particular users.

Did you delete the LW preferences earlier like I suggested?

It might be an idea to try another gnutella program to see if the same thing happens. Frostwire is basically the same as LW. But Phex, Cabos, Bearshare, etc. might be worth trying. Links to these programs can be found in their appropriate section on the forum or Cabos http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=47493

BTW you need to give LW a reasonable time to connect. Go to Tools>Options>Connections & untick option. Then wait 10 mins for LW to settle. Then go to menu bar, File>Connect. Give it at least 30 mins to try to connect.

FireStormZX November 4th, 2005 09:53 AM

Ok i Will give it some time to connect. If my ISP has blocked me how can i get around it?

Lord of the Rings November 5th, 2005 04:44 AM

See A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions.

FireStormZX November 5th, 2005 07:48 PM

according to this https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=6346 the status of my connection is stealth meaning my firewall wont let this port to be test if its open or closed. So, i turned all the firewalls and everything on my computer, and it still doesn't work. Do you think its my Linksys router (its been updated with the newest firmware)?

imhsn November 6th, 2005 02:12 AM

Some routers do have built in Firewalls, see if you can temporarily disable it.

Lord of the Rings November 6th, 2005 02:39 AM

Linksys routers generally use UPnP which allows LW to communicate directly with it to open the port it asks for. If your Linksys has a UPnP switch then make sure it's turned on. To do the port test you've refered to, open LW & change the listening port in it to that you want to try out. Then try the port test. LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls. In my experience, that particular port test works best if LW is open anyway.

FireStormZX November 6th, 2005 03:16 PM

turned uPnP on in my router settings, im port fowarding, and i tried upnp forwadring. I tried enabling manual port forward that didnt work either :(

FireStormZX November 8th, 2005 03:43 PM

Turns out my friend whom has the same type of internet (wireless Broadband), modem, router etc. Limewire no longer works for him either. Yet a friend with a different kind of internet (Dial-Up) but same ISP connects to limewire fine.

FireStormZX November 10th, 2005 05:14 PM

I finnaly confirmed that the port 6346 is OPEN! but there is still no connection? Any Ideas?

FireStormZX November 10th, 2005 06:02 PM

this is really annoying cuz the connection gathers a few bars and then it disconnects, Ive tried uPnP and Manual Port Forward and they both do the same... Does it matter if i have SP1 or SP2, cuz I have SP1...
