Now, can someone tell me what the heck they want? Blood?

Chriselle November 5th, 2005 08:07 AM

I too have suddenly started getting a error message on start up. A box keeps poping up stating ' Limewire was unable to write a necessary file because you do not have the necessary permission. Your preferences may not be maintained the next time you start Limewire or Limewire may behave in unexpected ways'
Everything was working fine until just recently. Does anyone know what could have possibly changed for this error message to suddenly appear.
The connection still stays on when the pop up box keeps repeatedly coming up. I have a firewall but have not adjusted it at all.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing but I still get the error pop up box.
Any suggestions, anyone.

I also see the error message above is missing some vital info. It's impossible to make sense out of an incomplete error message. Follow the instruction given to you. And provide for them details about your set up. Here's some clues:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

Chriselle: "I have a firewall but have not adjusted it at all." Well you should have. It may be blocking LW from opening or accessing the net depending on the FW. Configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Chriselle, I suspect you have a corrupt installation of either LW or Java. Might I suggest you start from scratch. ie: Use the Add/remove control panel & remove Java. Then reinstall it using the "Offline" installer. Find a link to it in point #1 here: Fixes for Limewire Also do point #2 in this link.
Then get the "Offline" installer from http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml & reinstall LW. No need to uninstall LW as it will uninstall itself during the installation process.

If same problems after all that, then uninstall Java again, & get the "Offline" installer for Java 1.4.2 Sometimes Java 1.5 doesn't behave well on some people's systems.
