says it needs to connect but then leaves me hanging!!!!!!!

so i just paid money to download pro limewire but if i try to search it says that limewire is: currently connecting to network and that my search may not return many results until i am fully connected to the network...... but then, it never connects. i changed the firewall port, blah blah, ive been trying to figure this out for hours and am getting very very frustrated. please. help.

oh oh, and i have a PC. windows, or whatever. and i dont really know how to use computers so, you know, idiot terms would help. im about to start crying. hard.

sara_also December 25th, 2005 11:51 PM

what is there no fix for this? does no one know what im talking about? anybody?>

birdy December 26th, 2005 12:06 AM

Hi Sara_also,
People have lives, be patient & someone will answer you;)

you need to give some details:
OS (Windows 2000, XP etc)
LW & Java version (in LW go to help > about LW & it will tell you)
Connection type (adsl, dial-up etc)
Modem/router brand & model number
Any firewalls you have running
Who is your ISP
Where you're connecting from ( home, school etc)
Have you used LW before, or is this your first go
What fixes you've tried that didn't work

have you read the stickies at the top of the page? If not, have a good look through them. There might be an answer there.

sara_also December 26th, 2005 12:36 AM

why doesnt it just work, hm? why when you pay money to have something work, it doesnt? not speaking to directly anyone, but why do i need to know what a proxy is, or java, or my broad band router??? why do i need to have an AA in computer science just to have a p2p WORK???
sorry just frustrated.
windows xp
LW version: 4.10.0 pro; JAVA 1.5.0_01
dsl connection
Modem/router brand & model number: i dont know what that is
Any firewalls you have running: windows security?
Who is your ISP: cable one?
connecting from home
this is my first try with LW

i tried changing the port for my firewall, ive tried changing my proxy, ive logged in under everyone else who uses this computer. ive uninstalled, ive reinstalled, ive restarted my computer. ive followed directions that people say will fix my problem. but they dont. i dont even know what else, its too hard to retrace my steps.

im sorry, i just really didnt think it would be so ridiculously hard to get a p2p, but now that ive paid them money im stuck with a program that doesnt work. i am crabby.

birdy December 26th, 2005 01:34 AM

It's frustrating when you pay for something which doesn't work as you'd hoped but...you could've got the basic version & not paid a cent;)

Have you configured your firewall to allow LW access?
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

It's important to find out your modem/router info as this is often the cause of connection probs. Your modem is the thing that plugs into your comp & lets you connect to the net. Have a good look around at all your hardware.

sara_also December 26th, 2005 02:34 AM

i already did that. it didnt work.

i bought the pro version hoping that i wouldnt have to deal with any of this crap. it still doesnt work.

its a 2wire lc_usb. whatever that means? its silver and shaped like a shark fin.

if all else fails you think ill get my money back?

murasame December 26th, 2005 03:03 AM

For someone who doesn't really know how to use computers, good job on finding all that info about your PC.
Anyway, there are a couple of reasons why LW works perfectly in some computer environments and needs a little more fiddling for others, but the gist is that every comp set up is differen and there can be factors that will hinder LW's functionality.
Blah, blah.

Whatever....

If all else fails you won't get your money back (as per the sayings of the messages you get before paying) so let's try and make this work, shall we?

You say that you've tried changing the firewall port. Does that mean that you've tried to change the port in LW (by opening and going to the options, etc etc)?
If not, try that. Here are some alternate ports, courtesy of the forums' cleaning lady: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24523

murasame December 26th, 2005 03:05 AM

If that doesn't work (or you have already tried it), try the more dangerous thing and completely disable your firewall just to see if LW wll connect.

If that fails too, try opening LW, disconnecting (File->Disconnect) the re-connecting.

sara_also December 26th, 2005 01:28 PM

nothing. it still wont work. i think ive tried everything. i think i hate limewire. they have crapped on my heart.

Lord of the Rings December 26th, 2005 01:53 PM

LW works fine for millions of people all over the world. A few have set up problems like you're having.

1. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

2. Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

3. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
4. 2wire lc_usb model number?
5. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
6. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
7. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
8. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

AFAIK 2wire devices don't use UPnP. But then again, USB devices are generally safe from this point.

Have a look at your 2wire lc & see if there's a UPnP switch on the outside of it.

Have you ever logged into your 2wire lc_usb device? Try typing each of these into your browser & tell us what happens: 1. http://172.16.0.1 & if that doesn't work then 2. http://gateway.2wire.net
You should be able to log into your modem device & see what firewall options there are. See if there's a UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) option.

murasame December 26th, 2005 04:37 PM

Hey LOTR. What up?

Some of the info you are asking for has already been provided:
3.DSL connection
5.Connects (or at least tries to) from home
6.Limewire version 4.10 Pro and Java 1.5.0_01
7.ISP is Cable one (AFAIK a "clean" ISP, i.e that doesn't block P2P)

sara_also December 26th, 2005 05:05 PM

ive already tried that firewall thing. it didnt work. people have told me to try that like 4 times on this thread. it doesnt work. i have comcast internet and a 2wire modem/router whatever you call it. the model number isnt clear but here are some numbers that are on the bottom of it: 2.4ds4. maybe thats it? any body got any new suggestions?

oh and that test thing it says: YOUR TEST WORKED!!!!!!!! !

birdy December 26th, 2005 07:27 PM

Have a go with the UPnP things that LOTR suggested:)

murasame December 26th, 2005 07:49 PM

Hey sara.

The difference between a modem and a router is important: a modem is a device that allows you to connect to the internet and, roughly, a router is a modem with a built-in firewall.
If it is a router you're having (I don't think that this is the case) then this needs to be configured too.

Lord of the Rings December 26th, 2005 08:06 PM

"none" of my questions were answered.
It's my guess your 2wire device has a model number something like *1000hw, *1000s, *1000sw, *1000W, *1000W, *1800hg, or *2700hg.
Well I guess it's a guessing game. I see something black with a white dot in the middle & ... see who's the 1st to guess what it is. :D

sara_also December 26th, 2005 08:23 PM

alright! so i figured out what kind of 2wire thing ive got. it says it has a firewall up. so that means i have 2, right? one windows security and one from the 2wire? the 2wire model is: 1000hw.
so how do i configure my router, or modem, or what have you? am i getting closer? oh and whats a punp? pnup?

Lord of the Rings December 26th, 2005 08:57 PM

Excellent, thank you. That means you will need to log into your device using your browser & make some small changes.

1. Set up a Static ip (very important - instructions in link below in #2)

2. Forward port 6346 as described here http://www.portforward.com/english/r...w/Limewire.htm

3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

This should do the trick. If not, try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.) & then repeat step #3 above. Give LW plenty of time to connect. It may take 5, 10, 20+ mins the 1st time. See how many green or blue bars you have at the bottom left of the LW interface window after this time.

BTW you shouldn't make or change proxy settings unless you have a proxy internet address. But deleting your LW prefs folder will remove this setting.

sara_also December 27th, 2005 12:39 AM

i reconfigured my firewall. then i set up a static ip and then i switched my firewall on LW to force or manual and nothing. its not working. still. after 2 days.

birdy December 27th, 2005 01:43 AM

Hi sara,
After you set up your static IP, did you set up port forwarding through your modem? The static IP is just the first step, so that port forwarding can work.

It all seems like a PITA but once you get it working, you won't look back. I had heaps of grief with mine, simply coz I forgot to press 'apply' after one of the steps!!

Once you get your port forwarding set up, then you can set LW to manual port forward within your tools > options etc.

Good luck:)
