Who is your isp and are you in a college or somewhere similar that might be capping p2p use ?

Re-check your firewall configuration. You don't need to turn it off, just configure it for LW. Don't have 2 firewalls running at once. Do the port test. Instructions for all here:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=50390

Try deleting your LW preferences while LW's closed. Try reinstalling Java using the "offline"installer. Instructions for all here:

You might have probs with an internal firewall in your modem/router(info in 1st link). What's your set up? (see 1st link for info needed)

:)

There has been a long history of problems with optimum online ... back in December all their p2p clients could not connect ... The problem eas a technical one and a lot of posts were made here about the subject in such a way that finding them is not exactly easy lol:) So we really don't know if the problems have been fully resolved.

Please get on to them and tell them your problem , and if they say here is not and has never has been a problem, get some one who knows what they are talking about. Search above right for optimum or OOL and see what else you can find ... but please update us as to what happens when you speak to optimum.

I have no idea if Birdy's reply or mine will solve your problem ... but I'm fairly sure one of them will :):)

well im about at the end of my ropes lol.
i called optimum and the guy said that my modem was bad and maybe that was the cause for the problem. he said it was just dumping all the large information packets and whatnot, so he suggested i come in for a new one. so i did. came home, hooked it up, internet works fine obviously. so i go to connect to limewire, and what do you know?
still doesnt work.
i did that test-y thing, i got the "Your test worked!" message, and yet still, noooo connection. i also updated my java, and deleted my preferences folder completely. no luck.

please help, i just want my limewire back lol

If it's not your ISP causing the problem, it might be your modem (a lot of them have their own internal firewall).

Did you configure your firewall for LW? Instructions are in the first thread I posted yesterday;) Just make sure you only have one firewall running.

What's your set up?
OS is Win 98
What Java version? (help > about LW & it'll tell you)
Connection type (ADSL, dial-up etc)
Modem/router brand & model
What firewalls you're running
How long was LW working well for, before this happened
Do you share a connection with other computers

If your new modem uses UPnP, make sure it's enabled in the modem & also within LW (tools > options > advanced > firewall config > tick 'use UPnP, apply)

xoxshortcake21xox January 31st, 2006 03:43 PM

and if this helps you at all....

1. OS version? Windows 98
2. What firewalls you have? it was uninstalled but i had norton.. now all i have is antivirus and internet worm
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available? 12.65 GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) CABLE
6. *** Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorola SB4200 SURFboard
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire 4.10.5 & JAVA 1.5.0_06
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? no
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says Your test worked
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. its a new problem

From what I've read, I think your modem has UPnP. So, check your manual, enable UPnP & then within LW too.

You're better off having one firewall running, configured for LW, than not using one at all!

I can't find any info about an internal firewall in your modem, but it might still be a problem.

birdy January 31st, 2006 07:14 PM

shortcake,
Your modem's not listed at the PortForward site, I'm guessing people don't have trouble with any internal f/wall.

If setting the UPnP does no good, I'd probably give your ISP another call (hopefully you'll speak to someone with a clue) & just double check that they're not the ones causing your problem.

**Maybe someone else here can suggest another fix???
