TalkTalk UK ISP blocking p2p

Just got off the phone with TalkTalk. Since p2p applications use up a big chunk of bandwidth, they have decided starting from 1 March they will be blocking p2p file sharing between the hours of 9am to 1am to enable an efficient service to all its customers. So to all those who use TalkTalk as their ISP we only have 8 hours a day to use LW. I'll find out tonight if this is true. I hope this answers a few queries.

We were already aware of TalkTalk shaping p2p bandwidth, but that is nice to hear they don't do it 24 hrs a day! ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire I've just sent a pm to someone (yet to post) who was inquiring about their problem. And TalkTalk was their problem. So hopefully this can give them a little hope.

guys, just heard of this prob with t/t and their b/width shaping. joined t/t 1.5 months ago and have spent the last month fiddling about with my connections, ports, settings etc, etc.
gonna get up at 07.30 to see if the above is real, if it is tt/ will be a customer down.

Yes it is tough. If you do change ISP, need to shop carefully. Many ISP's in UK now shape p2p bandwidth. One of the issues is big business buying up smaller ISP's who retain their old name but use the parent company's policies or similar policies. So you may need to investigate to find out if in fact the ISP has a parent company. ;)

Tiscali is a good example. They have spread their business europe wide including the UK.

have sent an email to t/t this morning but not hoping for any forthcoming answers/solutions as it's their bandwidth that gets "clogged up" with p2p users. have asked for confirmation of times when b/width is sqeezed to accomodate average joes as I read that there are varying times being banded about. this really gets my back up as i'm now tied to this mob for 18 months and unless there is someone out there who can make technology jump another 5 years within my 18 month contract then I'm screwed - i guess it's my own fault for not checking them out properly although i had never heard of b/width shaping before yesterday.

charlatans the lot of them, whatever happened to freedom and equality for all - we're being persecuted i say

ursula July 20th, 2008 07:17 AM

Hey, gazz !

Have you tried the link in my post above ?

The SAMKNOWS site is a very good place to go if you want to stop being screwed by bad ISPs !

;)

And, of course you are being persecuted and manipulated and ripped-off.

That's what you are supposed to experience as far as the bosses are concerned.
Now, tug that forelock or go to SAMKNOWS !

hi ursula,

sorry to say this but i'm not sure how to use the info on your link. found talk talk on the left hand side - the info relates to how many households are within/outside a 1000m limit from my exchange, etc, etc. am i missing something here. even if i did found another isp i'm still tied for the duration of the contract with t/t. i was with demon for 5 years before t/t and p2p was never an issue .......damn, damn, damn. when i get a moment i will go through your site properly(sitting on a laptop at the inlaws being very anti-social just now).
thanks ursula.

ursula July 20th, 2008 03:36 PM

Yeah, gazz... I know exactly what you mean...
In-laws really can be anti-social !!!

(er, did you mean using the lap-top ?
Nah, it must be the 'out-laws' !) :p

SAMKNOWS isn't 'my' site ! I'm just posting a link to it to help others in the U.K. use a source of info that tells the truth about the normal ISP pigs. And pigs they mostly are.

Please examine the SAMKNOWS site very carefully and you will find the info you need to blow your garbage lying ISP away and find something better for you (of course, depending on your area).

Don't worry about most contracts with ISPs... You can fight them...

Study SAMKNOWS and forget the crisps and the beer when the out-laws visit you....
They'll get the hint in 5-10 years !

P2P blocking

I am wondering if this is a problem which is affecting more & more people.
I am with Demon and get a good service from them. I don't think they are up to any nasty tricks as I can often get a very respectable download speed.
I have noticed in recent days though, that a download from some single hosts seem to take ages - 3K with frequent stoppages! I have also noticed uploads doing the same in some cases, with the punter eventually disconnecting in despair. My upload speed is potentially 115K.

I have recently installed Peer Guardian after a recommendation on this forum. What a marvellous piece of software which illustrates graphically the quantity of nasty scrotes trying to upset P2P. Please install it and keep the snoopers and malcontents locked out!
