Default help! Java problem is making me crazy

I have been trying to access LimeWire for a week with no success!!! It shouldn't be this hard!!!!
I download the software but always get an error reading, "LW failed to install Java. Installation will continue but LW will not start until you install the Java Runtime Environment from Java.com"

Ok...so I install the current version of JRE from Java.com....and I click on the LimeWire icon and it still says I must download a newer version of Java........
So I uninstall the Java and then reinstall it...same thing. so I uninstall LimeWire and reinstall that....same thing.....
I have talked to microsoft people, Dell people, and looked all over the internet trying to figure out this darn Java issue and no one has ever heard of this before or can offer any solutions.
I have XP and run Internet Explorer.
Does anyone out there have any idea what to do to resolve this????? I would just like to start enjoying LimeWire, but if I end up in a mental ward, it won't be very enjoyable, now will it! ha!
Pleeeeez someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried to install Java using it's offline installer? I think that you sometimes run into probs when installing over the net

Don't worry... if you end up in a mental ward, there'll be a lot of other forum members there to talk to!

Have you tried installing the Java 1.6 beta? Here's a link & take the JRE. Make sure you uninstall your old version of Java first.
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/

After you've done that, reinstall LW using it's offline installer
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
(no need to uninstall first, LW will do it when you install the new version)

Unhappy still no luck

I followed the Beta install and reinstalled LW....still the same problem. LW Install hangs up on 'installing Java' for a vary long time, then tells me Java was unable to be installed and to go to java.com to install newer version.
Any more ideas?????

This advice is from Grandpa

Go to Start/Controll Pannel/C:/Program Files and delete the java folder. With that completed try installing Java usually when you get thre message you are recieveing you have a previous install of Java hung.

Birdy,
Thanks for passing on Grandpa's suggestion. I have deleted everything I can find as far as Java is concerned and then reinstalled....to no avail.
I do want to tell you that when I downloaded the Beta version, as per your previous thread, I do have the Java icon on my control panel that now takes me to the Java Control Panel. This is a first. Something obviously improved...however, LW still won't open...still saying I need a newer version of java.
