All of a Sudden: Super slow downloads?!?

Hi,

I connect via cable modem. Company is Liberty Links (Puerto Rico). My speed should be 256k. I have had LW since 4.9.3 and everything was working smooth. My pc has McAfee firewall but has been working fine with LW. All of a sudden, since yesterday I can hardly get a download of over 1k.

The file says: "Downloading from 8 hosts" but in fact it will 'download' at either 0KB/s or just 1KB/s... Files are taking forever and my uploads are also at either 0 or 1 KB/s... Can someone help? Any tips? I have read the faqs and whatnot, but the truth is that I have NOT chanmged my configuration since I started using the program, the windows FireWall is even turned off amd the LW setting seems to be OK.... any tips!?

Please....

Tnx already,

lancelott

Last thing I did was set the uploads and downloads to Unlimited bandwidth... the problem persists...

I also incresed the amount of downloads to 20 and of uploads to 10... :(

Tnx for replying!

Tnx for replying... I tried everything on the "fix" thread, but the truth is it won't change anything. Its very weird cause I think this started when my computer automatically shutted down after installing a new windows update... but maybe I'm wrong...

I have my firewall disabled. The "globe" on the LW client has no "brick wall" and is all green. I 'connect' to the hosts...but the speed.... it simply WONT go over 1KB/s... simple as that. It took 6 hours (overnight) to download a 34,000 file that usually takes 5 mins...

I download stuff, lets say from download.com, and they are super fast. So the connection is fine...

Any more ideas on what could all this be?

Try cutting back on you upload bandwidth. Do a speed test and set it to 5 or 10 KBs below your max and see if that helps. Also if your trying to d/l too many files at one time it will slow things down.

I would search google if your ISP throttles P2P. That's my bet on your issue. There is no way you can only do 1kB/s swarming from more than 1 peer.

Ciao

:(

I'll try the speed test later...

For now, I just downloaded ares (the non-spyware version... took some time to find it for free...gee...). Anyways, ares is downloading stuff RIGHT as I write THIS:

-135.5 KB/s
-123 KB/s

So... I am almost sure it has to do with LW!!!!

But to be honest, ares is nowhere near as good or as fast as LW 'used' to be... OMG... any other suggestions?

(TNX a lot for the help so far! :) )

Odds are your ISP is blocking or filtering LimeWire. Try using the same port you use for Ares.

lancelott April 16th, 2006 10:24 AM

For the less tech savvy... could you point me towards some instructions as to how I can change LW to ares port? (althoug to be honest, I'm not quite sure that is the reason- I doubt my isp [a small, independant service] would do such thing).

With LimeWire open go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Firewall Config

Hey man!!

I Live in Rio Grande (Puerto Rico) And i Have the same company as you do and im having the same problem :(

lancelott April 17th, 2006 10:41 PM

Hey Mokito!!! Great to see someone from the island!!!! :)

I think that might be the reason. I also researched a bit, and found out they had some "control issues". Turns out ppl with the 256kbs offer, had peaks at night of 1MB downloads. They were apparently giving away extra bandwidth.

Why don't you download Ares (wich works) and then forward LW to the ares port like suggested here?

I'm trying that tommorrow, and nice to hear from a fellow puertorican.

Same problem here too...

Hey, nice to see more people from PR here. :) I got the same problem with Liberty, here in Manatí. Was using Shareaza for Gnutella and my downloads, which here usually at 24 kbps fell to < 1 kbps. :( And worse: it looks like they are throttling other networks as well. I also use eMule and I usually leave it the whole night connected, but now in the morning, for weeks, it has downloaded almost nothing.

I`m downloading Ares right now. Hope it brings some light to the problem.

Thanks for the info!:)

lancelott April 19th, 2006 07:46 AM

I'm from Manati too! :) !!!!!!!

And liberty sucks then... I wish I could call them, but not only do they leave you 2 hours on the phone, they have the most un-knowledgeable tech staff in the whole world IMO.

I have tried to forward LW to the ares port, but I have been unsuccesful. If any of you know of a way to do it (or to find out which is actually ares port) I'll be very grateful...

I wish we had more broadband options around, as I would'nt mind changing isp's... what Liberty is doing is treason!!!!

Well... later guys!! :)
