newbie has firewall problem!
 

Hi everyone,
Like so many others - I also have a firewall problem. I am still able to download but cannot remove the "brick wall" to allows others to upload from me. I do connect through a router but I had no "brick wall" when I installed LW a couple of days ago. This seems to have appeared after I downloaded updates from windows. I have read all the related threads I could find but did not see any instructions or fixes I could follow because my OS is Windows 98. (I followed the link suggested in another thread and did the test. It said "your test worked") Any help would be greatly appreciated...I don't want to be a freeloader! :eek: Thanks! Retrochick.
My system details are;
OS: Windows 98SE
128 MB RAM, Pentium 2, 68% system resources free
Available space on drive C: 17895MB of 19083MB (FAT32)
Router: Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router model BEFSR41
Connection type: Cable (Rogers high speed is ISP)
No installed firewall software. Using AVG free edition 7.1.385 for AV.
Trying to connect from home. No other computers networked to me. No other p2p software installed.
LW version 4.10.9 Java 1.5.0_03
Under LW options - firewall config - router configuration: use UPnP is selected.

I can't tell you why your UPnP enabling worked & now doesn't:confused:
Your router does have a NAT firewall so it's possible that manual port forwarding is the way to go. But... there are several models of your router! You'll need to find exactly which one you have (see image).

Are you having trouble connecting to LW? Just that Rogers is known for p2p bandwidth shaping
ISPs known to block or filter p2p

Find out which version of router you have. By that time, someone else might've appeared with a better solution;)
If not, you can get instructions for manual port forwarding!

Hi Birdy, Thanks for the info. I can download from LW but it seems no one can upload from me. Because I just downloaded LW a couple of days ago, I'm not really sure if the upload ever worked - I had no files to share before I downloaded some mp3's. The "brick wall" did not appear until a day later and I assumed it had something to do with windows updates and service packs. I recently had to replace my hard drive, so the OS was reinstalled. I installed LW before I did all the updates. Maybe that was just a coincidence because I had no idea that some ISP's are blocking p2p. It could be that once I had files in the shared folder my ISP filter kicked in?:mad: It seems strange that I am able to download fairly quickly though...:confused:
p.s. I could not view any images in your attachment but my router is BEFSR41.

Do you know which version There are several versions it should be on the front of the router it will say BEFSR41 V3

Yeah, it's strange about Rogers... I would've thought you'd have connection probs & not be able to download it. Hope I didn't jinx it for you:D

If you go to this web page, you'll see what I mean about different router versions. There's no port forwarding for a plain old BEFSR41 (scroll down thru the Linksys models). But when I looked up the plain ol' version with Google, it says there's a NAT firewall... so port forwarding must be an option. Hope I'm not confusing you too much... do you get what I mean?:) I just don't want to point you towards one of those other versions in case the info's wrong for you. You could have a look through the PortForward page anyway & see what you think

Thanks birdy. I'm on the port forwarding info page. I'll see if I can figure out a fix. It may take me a while because it says "In order to forward properly you really need to understand what port forwarding is. This might seem like an irrelevant step, but it is not." :( Yes, I'm begining to see that I don't see...:)

To port forward for the v3 (it's not hard, just a bit time consuming!)

Step 1. Set up a static IP address. Don't skip this step.

Step 3. Within LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Tick 'manual port forward', making sure you add the listening port number. Apply.

Yes there is lots of reading but the instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. My promblem was that I could not get my DNS from the prompt. It returned a DHCP server number instead. I tried this number in the setup but it didn't work. (lost connectivity) I guess I'll have to call my ISP tomorrow and find out what it is. I think this will work for my LW problem. If not - I sure learned alot of stuff I didn't know! :D I'll let you know if I get it fixed. Bye for now! :)

YAY!!! It finally worked!!!:D :) :D I am a port forwarding girl! :cool: Thanks for the links to the resources. I had alot of pitfalls trying to set up my static IP. :eek: When I called my ISP they would not give me a DNS! :mad: I did find a link on the portfoward forums to get it anyway. :p Then had to reset and reconigure my router as well. For anyone else having this problem - don't forget to Apply your manual port forward choices if you want to get rid of that evil brick wall!!! ;)
