need some help i'm pretty new at all of this but i was using limewire for a few months and then it stopped working i got a new ISP and still my limewire will not connect and it says i'm behind a firewall (brickwall in front of earth) but the only firewall i have is windows firewall which i have turned off i'm on windows xp with the service pack 2 if there is any other information that is needed i'll see what i can do to get that to you but any help at all would be very appreciated |
Don't run without a firewall, just configure the firewall to allow LW through. Read through this sticky, it tells you how to configure firewalls. Do the port test & see what result you get. If your router supports UPnP, make sure it's enabled within the router & ticked within LW's tools > options > advanced. Connection problems? Check here first! Read the stuff about NAT firewalls in modems/routers. Does yours have one? What are your details OS(Win XP etc) LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see) Firewall you're using Modem/router brand & model ISP Connection type (DSL etc) Where you connect from (home, school etc) Are you sharing a connection with other computers Is this your first try with LW |
i'm running windows xp with service pack 2 LW version 4.10.9 java version 5.0 update 6 Firewall I'm using Windows firewall that came with my windows xp my ISP is a local company yucca communications Connection type is dial up 56.k i'm connected at my house no i'm not sharing a connection with other computers this is not my first time using Limewire also when it does happen to connect for a few minutes at a time after hours of waiting the firewall disappears from in front of the earth but if i close limewire and reopen it the firewall emblem reappers. i have done the connecting through the windows firewall before but it didnt do anything |
Did you configure your firewall? What was the result of the port test? What's the brand & model of your router? Does it support UPnP & if so have you got it enabled? The firewall might be within your modem/router. It's still better to run with the Win firewall than no firewall at all. |
the port test says Your test worked! i tried the configure firewall but still nothing same thing. i have no idea what a router is but the UPnP is enabled |
Your router is a piece of hardware. What boxes do you have that are connected to your computer? Have a look around & see what you can find. It might have 'router' written on it or 'modem' or 'modem/router'. It will have LEDs... some will blink & some will just stay lit. |
i dont have anything like that on my computer |
What plugs into your phone line to let you connect to the net? |

my phone line just plugs into my modem |
What's the brand & model of your modem???:D |
the brand is gateway the only thing about the model i can come up with is that its an ESSENTIAL |
1 Attachment(s) See if you can find the model somewhere. See the jpeg below, these are the Gateway models listed on portforward.com's page. Yours might be one of them:) |
i've found that its a Gateway 56K AC-Link Voice Modem and i didnt see that on the list. i dont know if thats the correct information but its all i could find but either way i want to thank you for having the patience in dealing with me in all this |
Ok, I think you're talking about a modem within the computer, rather than an external modem that plugs in to your computer. Might have to ask some other people to look at this thread! Stay tuned....;) |
1 Attachment(s) I think you are using an internal modem. I doubt it has a firewall in it. Have you called your ISP and asked if they block or filter P2P networks. Also are you running any of the new Microsoft Beta security software. Does your ISP supply a firewall with your service. Edit: I did a Internet search of your ISP the page said they supplied one type of protection against viruses. Ask them if this protection is a firewall. |
i havent talked to my ISP yet but i will and i will get back to you on that but i dont think it is a firewall because there are rare occasions where my limewire will connect for a few minutes and the firewall icon disappears i dont know if that is revalent to this problem but maybe and i dont think i have any Microsoft Beta security software, i usually dont have anything that is beta. |
There are patches you can download for SP2 to help with connections. This link courtesy of LOTR:) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...419#post105419 |
i tried the patch your talking about but still nothing |
You said you had turned your firewall off, but have you configured it in any case to allow LW? Configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) |
If you are able to connect on rare occasions. The odds are it is on your ISP end. Either they are blocking or shaping P2P traffic or there is a firewall that is not configured properly. Try setting LimeWire to higher ports. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...7&d=1145212675 |
i configured my firewall anyways and still the same thing. it worked for a few minutes it got up to 3 bars then disconnected. i am begining to think it is my ISP i'll talk to them on monday but if it is my ISP is there any way to get around that? |
Like Grandpa said, you could try changing ports. There's no guarantee it will work but you could give it a shot! Some more info here Alternative Ports |
i tried changing different ports but it didnt work. ah well guess i'll just talk to my ISP see what the deal is if its on their end or what but thanks for all your help |
Try using some of the higher numbered ports. Try between 50,000 and 60,000 just try different numbers. Sometimes they don't block the higher ports. With LimeWire open go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Firewall config choose Manuel port forward and put the number you want in the box. Also set the listing port to the same number. But I think your ISP may be supplying you with a firewall that needs to be configured. I do not know what the other kind of protection they are referring to in the screen shot I provided above is. But it may be a firewall. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...7&d=1145212675 I must really be getting slow. 2 replys while I typed out 1:D |
Sometimes just keeping the connection port to upnp & the listening port to a higher port does the trick. Safest ports are 49152 - 65535 for example, 64049. But after making changes, you may need to reconnect or disconnect & reconnect within LW whilst waiting a minute in between. |
