STILL CANNOT CONNECT... help plz

 (have LWpro4.10)connects and then drops the connection. it says i have a firewall (i don't, actually i have no virus protection, 'cept spysweeper) and it says i don't have an active internet connection, i haven't had this prob with bearshare or morpheus. i tried the 'test' (it worked) and going to the options and the example bug report (it says false) here are PC specs (if it helps)

Win98
650mhz Pentium III
dial up internet (sasktel)
Limewire PRO 4.10.0
NO FIREWALL (i think)
10.3GB of HDD space left

i don't know what else to tell about it except it'd be a big help if U could fix it
Thanx:)

I have ran Limewire 4.9 on this computer before(basic). I didn't pay for PRO i got it from a friend... Sometimes i see the firewall icon in front of the globe and when its there it won't connect. When its not there i had no prob connecting. I have my computer sharing a phone jack with another computer. I don't know about my isp blocking it but how do i find out?

Bitz n' Bytes May 31st, 2006 04:44 PM

I understand the link, but i don't think i have a firewall, i have an anti virus program that blocks certain cookies as they are coming in but i keep it turned off as it slows my computer down. It seems every time i get something good on my computer it craps out on me. :)

Bitz n' Bytes May 31st, 2006 05:08 PM

sorry i made a mistake, im running limewire right now and there is no wall in front of the globe but it still says "starting connection"

birdy May 31st, 2006 06:33 PM

Do this test & see what result you get
http://www3.limewire.com:6346

Tell us your ISP & if you use an external modem/router, the brand & model.

Bitz n' Bytes May 31st, 2006 07:50 PM

My ISP is Sasktel (i think) but i used Sympatico to connect. Port 6346 is open according to the test and my modem is internal.

A canadian isp right? It would be interesting to find who is the parent company!

Try an experiment, try downlding a magnet link from here: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml
Tell us what happens in detail with speed & connection.

I got that one of those videos downloading right now, the connection status filled up to 'turbo-charged', and droped back down to zero, and according to LW i now have no firewall...
Its downloading from 1 host at 1 kb/s and remaining time is 8 hours. in reply to birdy's PM i have my ultrapeer capabilities diasbled. hope this info helps...

birdy June 1st, 2006 05:00 PM

Have you actually asked Sasktel/Sympatico whether they're using traffic shaping? Even though I can't find anything on Google to support the theory:o Are you still able to use Bearshare & Morpheus?? If so then I guess it blows that theory away!

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 05:07 PM

p2p shaping

looking on sasktel's site as i speak, i wish they'd get high speed availible on farms...

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 05:17 PM

shaping p2p

i couldn't find much on sasktel.com, except that they are 'ending official support for win98 and millenium'. This is of june 30th so i don't know why it might affect me.

Lord of the Rings June 1st, 2006 05:59 PM

The link I gave you should give you decent downld speeds. I haven't heard too often of dial up users being shaped for p2p use but perhaps some isp's are getting tough on all users.

You could try changing both your connection & listening port to one between 49152 - 65535 such as 64049 & see if this makes a difference. You may need to restart or reconnect LW for it to have any effect.

I checked out the 'connection problems part duex' and downloaded that jar file, but what do i do with it. i have no programs that open it.

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 07:35 PM

OK i changed my listening port to 64049 and i did the manual prot forwarding to port 62830. i don't know if it worked but ill tell u in a bit, reconnecting LW...

Lord of the Rings June 1st, 2006 07:37 PM

I'm not sure about the jar file as I've never used it. Did you downld the purger file: http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...ads/purger.jar

I'd suggest you should have both listening & connection port the same if you forwarded port 62830

could my version of java be the prob?

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 07:51 PM

thats the jar that i got, i open it and it has a bunch of letters that don't make sense, i don't think i have the right program to open it with, it says its a 'CLASS'
file ? ? ? and i changed my listening port the same as the forwarding port

Lord of the Rings June 1st, 2006 07:55 PM

So what's happening exactly?

The recommended Java is version 1.5

There is a version 1.6 beta which is improved but LW will only use it if you don't have any other Java versions on your computer. What you could do is use the add/remove control panel to remove all Java versions. Then install Java 1.6 http://java.sun.com/javase/6/download.jsp JRE "Offline" version which is a 15.72 MB download

You may also be interested in trying the LW 4.11.2 beta which has improvements: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
No need to uninstall LW, it will be removed at the beginning of installing of the new version. You might want to delete your LW prefs though. If you do you'll need to reset your firewall settings with manual port forwarding.

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 08:02 PM

ok in have that link in another tab here but it says current version 4.10
where do i click?

Lord of the Rings June 1st, 2006 08:10 PM

Go to LW's menu bar, Help menu > About LW will show both LW version & Java version.

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 08:19 PM

i have java 1.5.0_3 and LW 4.10 PRO should i upgrade?

Bitz n' Bytes June 1st, 2006 08:24 PM

when i go to that link it says download pro or basic, but they're both 4.10

birdy June 1st, 2006 08:28 PM

If you're going to download the LW beta I think you'll need at least Java 1.5.06. Try the Java beta, if it doesn't go well then you can always go for 1.5.06 later. If you're a Pro customer you can download Pro... if not go for the basic!

Lord of the Rings June 1st, 2006 08:30 PM

The beta from here http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml

And no don't upgrade to pro if you only have dial up, & whilst you're having problems.

Bitz n' Bytes June 2nd, 2006 05:45 PM

Last night, after i had logged off the forums, i had tried LW again and amazingly, it had gotten up to the 'turbo charged' bar in the connection meter. it kept like this for about 25 minutes and then went from the turbo to excellent to good, ect. This problem seems to be a random thing because i have LW running right now and its starting connection. I honestly haven't seen anything like this before, I figure it might just be a bug so im using the link above for the beta, U think i'd help?

Bitz n' Bytes June 2nd, 2006 05:53 PM

i dont know if i should get the beta java, if its 15mb id be on the net for at least 3 hours. if beta doesn't work then ill get the java.

Lord of the Rings June 2nd, 2006 06:05 PM

As said, if you get the beta 1.6 java version then uninstall all other java versions otherwise LW won't find it.
