limewire uploads restricted by ISP maybe?? I have written to this forum a number of times and still have not got a satisfactory answer to why: I can download all I want but any one who wishes access to my library gets their transfer interruped.. Why ? I have the regular firewalls up nothjing special. .I use the Shaw cable modem and highspeed.., and my virus-firwall settings are with Shaw Secure which use the F secure program. I will paste a .jpg to show picture of problem.. help ?? !! |
As you know, we can't get your ISP to remove their upload filters. I had to sign up with a competitor to show my ISP that their filters were interrupting my uploads, just like yours. Thanks to the head of help desk, the internet admins worked out a way to put my cable modem on an unfiltered line, so I stayed with them rather than switch to the competition. Try signing up with the competition (many offer a free 2 month trial), and see if that helps. If you want to know *how* the ISP's filter the uploads, google for "Sandvine." For *why?*, Google aslo has many articles on "bandwidth shaping." |
Well I wrote a letter to my Shaw provider outlining my situation here with them and got this answer back: ( so it looks like I am back at square one..) Shaw does not filter any data that is being uploaded. We don't pose restrictions other than the total bandwidth used per month. As it stands the limit is set at 60 Gigabytes/month for uploading and downloading combined and you are well below this limit. Rest assured we are not limiting your uploads. There are numerous variables involved with connection issues. Please note that the people trying to take data from your computer subscribe to different ISP's. As Shaw does not control other provider's servers we can't really properly diagnose since Shaw can only administer to its own servers. We can tell you that recent tests to your modem connection all passed with flying colors therefore indicates no problems at Shaw end. What this tells us is that the outside people trying to take data from your computer are experiencing problems at their ISP level or are encountering congestion somewhere along the route to get to your computer. It is they that will have to notify their providers if their connection keeps disconnecting. Emmanuel Shaw Internet Vancouver Help |
well--that's pretty clear. Looks like all those reports of Shaw in BC throttling are getting dated. I see you also checked out bbr http://www.dslreports.com/forum/shaw and it looks like Telus is the competition there. Is Telus offering a free trial this summer? That could confirm the letter's claims. (did you check your PM's?) |
ttodd, go to Google & search for Ellacoya. They provide a kind of traffic shaping technology (think it's called Deep Packet Inspection?) which Shaw are using:( |
yes--that was last year. The Shaw letter is much more recent. Hope the help desk is in the loop and are correct. The ISP's help desk doesn't always know what the internet admins are doing: the help desk at my ISP were about to even try replacing the underground cable before we finally tracked an upload problem to some experimental bandwidth throttling software/hardware the admins had been trying. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...light=sandvine http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=21380 was fun to review too while I looked for the name of the other bandwidth controls: Google CISCO NBAR ;) |
