solution to "Starting Connection"!!

I had a problem with my limewire it kept saying Starting Connection.
i tried re-installin it and deleting the .limewire folder but nothing worked.

it started to stop working when i made an new user and deleted the oldone.
usually wen u deleted the old account all da programs installed stay working but some go corrupt and u hav to re-install them.

as you know limewire needs Java. just the other day i decided to download the newest version of Java. wen it was installed limewire worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so if ur connection always says: "Starting Connection" then download and install the newest version of Java.

You need to read through this, it has heaps of info about connection problems
Connection problems? Check here first!

Make sure that your firewall's still set up to allow LW access. Do this test & see what happens http://www3.limewire.com:6346

Did anything change (new hardware, new firewall, new ISP or change of plan etc) before your LW stopped connecting? Are you using UPnP or port forwarding through your modem/router?
What are your details?

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

:Blue: June 16th, 2006 11:49 PM

OS(Win XP etc)=No
LW & Java version=latest
Firewall you're using=is turned on
Modem/router brand & model=internet is working,but LW just stopped
ISP=fine
Connection type=ISDN
Where you connect from=home
Are you sharing a connection with other computers=yes
Is this your first try with LW=no i have it for like 1 year..and it has happend before than i had to format my computer and it worked and then it did it again and now it just wont work

And I have done all those fire walls settings and all

AaronWalkhouse June 17th, 2006 12:13 AM

What is the name of your ISP.

:Blue: June 17th, 2006 08:13 AM

Hi Blue, could you answer the questions:D What is your OS? What is the firewall that's turned on? What are the brand name and model numbers of your modem and/or router?

Before LW stopped working, did you have any UPnP enabled for connecting or were you using port forwarding? I can't find any info about that ISP.

What happened when you tried the port test... did it work?
(sorry I missed your post yesterday...I was a bit brain-dead)

:Blue: June 18th, 2006 02:29 AM

Upnp was switched off/unchecked and it was working fine,And skytec is a south african ISP..and the firewall is the windows XP default one(dont know its name),Brand name?I dont know and my router is on the roof O.O

birdy June 18th, 2006 04:33 PM

What happened when you did the port test here?
http://www3.limewire.com:6346

You could try changing to a higher port (recommended range between 49152 - 65535). See below for instructions. Don't forget, you'll also have to change the port number for Gnutella within the XP firewall.

briannexcore June 18th, 2006 11:58 PM

the same thing is happening to me. i dont know whats wrong. ive tried everything.

:Blue: June 19th, 2006 06:59 AM

nope I did all of that in the above and the test said"Your test worked" and LW still doesnt want to work

briannexcore June 19th, 2006 10:12 AM

uggggh im having the same problem.

OS: Win XP
LW & Java version PRO 4.10.9 & 1.5.0_07
Firewall you're using: Windows Firewall, but its turned OFF
Modem/router brand & model: D-LINK Air DWL 122
ISP: AOL? i'm not sure
Connection type: DSL
Where you connect from: Home
Are you sharing a connection with other computers: Yeah, and both of their Limewires work fine.
Is this your first try with LW: On this computer, yes.

Do this test & post what result you get (does it say "your test worked"?)
http://www3.limewire.com:6346 : Yeah, it says it worked.

:Blue: June 20th, 2006 10:09 AM

Why wont it work???

foolofthehill June 20th, 2006 10:20 AM

Did you try to delete your " .limewire " preference folder as discribed in Point 2&3 in this thread:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420

By the way, did XP install some updates recently?
I'm asking, because it did with mine and then some things had changed in my TCP configuration.
;)

:Blue: June 22nd, 2006 10:38 AM

I dont know..And I have deleted lime wire completey off and still wont..I went on LM today for a check and it came on! and then it died again><

foolofthehill June 22nd, 2006 10:24 PM

Although you've deleted LW from your system, the ".limewire" folder might still be there and the next time you install LW, it will take over the preferences from that folder.
I reckon you just give it a try.....;)

:Blue: June 23rd, 2006 04:14 AM

May I ask..I installed LW on my dads PC to check if it worked,And it also said starting connection,I share a internet connection through networking so maybe he is the cause with the internet that is causing the starting connection?

foolofthehill June 23rd, 2006 07:38 AM

Well, to be able to help you, it would be nice when you answered all the questions asked already by Birdy.
Especially the question of your modem/ router besides the other unanswered questions.
Unless we get those info, we won't be able to advise you properly.;)

lilgapeach479 June 23rd, 2006 02:30 PM

sorry, but it did not work

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
;)

lilgapeach479 June 24th, 2006 09:57 AM

10.yes, 3 other wireless computers
11.first try
12.It says age connot be displayed

foolofthehill June 24th, 2006 10:36 AM

Read the post No. 12 of LOTR in the following thread regarding Belkin router:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...=Belkin+router

In the same thread you'll find a post of Birdy regarding Belkin support page.;)

And by the way, if you can't reach the page with "Your test worked" it means that your ISP is blocking the port 6346.
You must change the listening port to a higher range, such as 64049 or 47058. Do this in LW as well as in your firewall (XP) and don't use 2 firewalls at the same time. One is enough and the second one will only interfere with the first one.

lilgapeach479 June 24th, 2006 03:50 PM

S i did what you said and it worked once, but when i tried to download it said connectiong, forever an it never loaded. so i closed it and now i am back where i started......
