Firewall issue

I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but I tried to search the forum for this problem but couldn't find anything on this issue. I am having an issue where LW is saying that a firewall is blocking my connection, but when I look at my firewall, it's diabled, so I don't know what's going on. I've tried deleting everything that has to do with LW and have unistalled the program including the LW preferences folder, but when I reinstall LW, it doesn't prompt me to reset my preferences an it looks like it's somehow just pulling up all of my old LW files.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The firewall might be within your modem/router. Have a read through this, there's a lot of info about internal firewalls within routers & ways to solve the firewall problem (enabling UPnP & port forwarding). Rather than disable your software firewall, it's better to configure it to allow LW access. You'll find links for firewall setup within the thread. If the firewall's coming from within a device, deleting your prefs isn't going to change that.
Connection problems? Check here first!

If you have no joy there, post back with your details

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

Thanks Birdy. I actually did go in and try to configure my XP firewall and everything looked good there, but when I tried to enable UPnP, that's where I got lost. I followed the instructions and did everything that I was supposed to do, but I never got the "finish" button. So, after I made all of the changes, I hit "ok" , but my computer never brought up the "Residential Gateway Icon" in My Network Places like the instructions said it would. Mind you, I'm not very computer savvy, so that's obviously a problem as well, so I apologize ahead of time if I say something that makes you say "uh, hello!!" Lol! I really appreciate your patience with me. I thought I followed everything exactly as I was supposed to. Maybe this is where the problem lies.

WinXP
Limewire: 4.12.3
Java: 1.5.0_07
Modem/router: I honestly don't know what this is? (This is where you get to say say, uh, hello!!)
ISP?
Connection: Cable from home
I am not sharing a connection with anyone
I've actually used LW for quite a while before experiencing this problem

Don't worry, we'll find out what your router is:D What devices do you have that plug into your computer & into the cable outlet? Have a look at all the hardware you have (apart from comp & printer). Look for brand & model of anything extra. You must've logged into your router to try & enable UPnP... does it say a make & model when you bring up those router pages on your computer?

ISP is internet service provider... who do you pay for your internet access?
Is the XP firewall the only software firewall you have?

Ok, hopefullt this is what you're looking for:

My router says it's a Haltron Tech model # BRG-35202
My ISP is an off the wall company called TV Max.

I don't beleive I have another Firewall because when I go into my control panel, all I see is a "Windows firewall" and if there is another firewall running, I have no idea where to find that info. Under my firewall options, it's set up to allow LW to get through, so I don't understand why all of the sudden it's not working.

birdy June 26th, 2006 08:37 PM

I'd suggest that you ask your ISP about this. I can find a Hitron (not Haltron) BRM 35202 & BRG3520... but neither of those is the model you've said you have. I can't find any info at all to tell me whether either of those devices has an internal firewall or supports UPnP... sorry.

Hopefully your ISP can tell you why your device is causing LW to show a firewall & help you to configure it:confused:

Oh well. I certainly appreciate your attempt at helping me and all of your patience. I'll try my provider. Thanks again.

Toadsprout June 26th, 2006 08:44 PM

Actually, I went back and looked and it is a Hitron BRG35202. Sorry about that...the letters are so small, you need a magnifying glass to read it. Is it possible that you can still help me?

birdy June 26th, 2006 08:55 PM

Well that's just weird because the only 35202 I could find is a BRM... not a BRG:(

Like I said before, there just isn't much info about those at all & certainly not enough to give you any instructions for port forwarding. Did a manual come with the thing?? Is there a switch anywhere for UPnP? If you can find a UPnP switch then turn it on & choose 'use UPnP' within LW's options > advanced > firewall config, then apply.

Did you get the router from your ISP? If they sold it to you then they should be able to help you out with any problems. I'm really sorry but I can't tell you much more! Hope you can sort it out:o

Toadsprout June 26th, 2006 09:02 PM

That's just my luck! I did go in and look in my firewall config and it shows that it's using UPnP, so I have no idea what's going on here. Ay yay yay! I'll get in touch with my ISP. Thanks again and I'll stop bugging you now. :p
