Everytime I search, nothing comes up!

I don't understand, everytime i try to search for something, nothing happens. It stays the same everytime, can someone PLEASE explain how to work this?

thx

Blondy212 June 25th, 2006 07:20 PM

Also, on the top of the screen it says
LimeWire:Enbling Open Information Sharing
What does that mean? is that why i can't find anything?

birdy June 25th, 2006 07:34 PM

It's ok, LW always says "enabling open info sharing". For your no results problem, follow the advice in the thread below:)
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...search+results

Blondy212 June 25th, 2006 07:44 PM

I checked that, but its not the problem. What it says when i try to search is

LimeWire is currently connecting to the network... your search may not return many results until you are fully connected...

I don't understand why its not already connected, its been running for atleast 1/2 an hour, is threre anything i can do for that? HOw do i get it to be fully connected?

birdy June 25th, 2006 08:17 PM

You need to read through this. All of it.
Connection problems? Check here first!

Make sure that you're only running 1 firewall & that it's set up to allow LW access. Do the port 6346 test & see what reslut you get. Do you see the firewall icon (brick wall)? What are your details?

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

Searches don't return any results

Hey, I had the same problem as you and I couldn't figure what was wrong since none of the answers seemed to apply to my case. My searches never returned any results. I went to File and disconnected, and the green bar (only the smallest one was green!) on my connection thing went down, and then I connected again. When I searched the same song, it immediately returned me 20 hits, and the connection bar was completely green, all five of them. It also only took about 2 seconds literally for the search to finish loading, whereas the last time, it took about 5 minutes. So try disconnecting, then connecting and searching again.

tbescapee November 10th, 2007 06:30 PM

I have been having the same problem - no results from searches but disconnecting anf re-connecting hasn't helped.

birdy November 10th, 2007 06:44 PM

tbescapee,

Is your LW connected (all green/blue connection bars)? If it is, try the fixes below.

1. In LW go tools > options > searching > basic & check whether the 'show license warning' box is ticked. If it does, untick it > Apply > ok...see if that makes any difference.

2. Problems with the search

3. Delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things.

akala November 10th, 2007 07:46 PM

been using limewire for years, no probs whatsoever, but i started it the other day, and when i go tools > options, the option box quickly appears then dissapears...also everytime i close it it opens again, no matter how many times i close it...
i unistalled and installed it 3 times no but same thing....anyone help~??

if it helps, in my limewire folder in program files, there are loads of java thingys??

birdy November 10th, 2007 11:49 PM

akala,

Can you take a screenshot of all those files so that we can see what's happening?

Had you opened a newly downloaded file just before this started happening? If so, can you remember what type of file you'd downloaded (don't name the file, just tell us what type it was - wma, mp3 etc)?

There's a fix for the popping up thing here, you can give it a try. The original poster in that thread also did a system restore after running the BFU & found that it helped...so give that a try as well.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...estarting.html

I'd also update your AV & scan your computer. There's another link in that thread with further links to online scans if you want to try one of those. Please let us know if a scan finds any malware. If you're still having problems, go to one of the specialist malware removal sites mentioned in that thread.

I see now that I am not connecting. This was not a problem before. Norton firewall is supposed to allow LW. Indeed this started when the Norton firewall was not running.

jkfabf November 12th, 2007 04:57 PM

I'm also having a problem similar to this,
I've added LW as an exception to the firewall
but on the "read me first part" it said something about it saying it was permanently connecting.

I went to the connections tab to look, and there is nothing there
is this the issue?
On the tab preview in the read me file it had 10-12 sources there.

I also created a folder on where to save the downloads, not sure how that would affect its ability to connect, just though I should throw that out there since it was messing with all the presets.

birdy November 12th, 2007 05:19 PM

tbescapee & jkfabf,

Try the advice here: all of a sudden will not connect (a fix to try)
Start off by deleting LW's preferences folder & changing Java versions.

In case you have Vista, things are a bit different to XP when finding the preferences folder & other files/folders within Application Data. This thread should help with that: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

If nothing there helps, please give us your details.
System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

jkabf November 12th, 2007 05:30 PM

I searched for the .limewire folder to erase it and change it

I included all hidden etc folders
nothing was returned?

I was using a version of limewire that WAS working, and it wasn't connecting before so I updated Java and that worked
but then it stopped connecting again.

I uninstalled LW and Java, reinstalled, reupdated (after trying without the update) and it never connected.

I'm using an Avast! firewall and webroot spysweeper.

birdy November 12th, 2007 05:38 PM

The folder might not be named .limewire (the old preferences folder within Documents and Settings\username was named .limewire).
Try looking for C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\LimeWire. If you have a folder named LimeWire (note: not all lower case & no dot in front), delete that one.

jkabf November 12th, 2007 06:01 PM

WOW, thank you. It worked almost instantly.

kudos =]

newbie needs help!!!

i am a first time user of limewire. and have had 3 days of headaches and frustration. i have tried to do searches, and have not had any found, even when i do a basic one, nothing comes back. im sure it has to be a glitch, or some setting that needs to be checked or unchecked. in my lower left corner, it says starting connection and only one green bar is lit, could this be the issue? please help if anycan,

birdy November 13th, 2007 05:05 PM

polotodd,

Try the fixes in post #8 of this thread. If they don't help, see post #14.

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)-VISTA
2. What firewalls you have?-1?, BUT LW IS ALLOWED
3. How much ram?-4GB
4. Hard Disk space available?-ENOUGH
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)-DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?-WESTELL VERSALINK 327W
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?-HOME
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.-THE NEWEST OF BOTH
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?-BELLSOUTH
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?-IT WORKS
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.- NOPE
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.-I USED LW YEARS AGO, BUT I JUST BOUGHT PRO VERSION
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? -YES

Yes your problem is a connection problem. You need to be properly connected to the network to do searches.

Remember Vista has its own firewall. Some Vista systems come loaded with 3rd party firewalls so choose which one to use & disable the others. Make sure LW is allowed access.

For people who are upgrading to LW Pro, it's a good idea to delete your LW prefs folder whilst LW is closed; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

In my experience the Westell devices are best port forwarded. But at least log into your Westell device & ensure UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is enabled. (a) If not, then enable it, save settings & reboot router if needed. Then try LW again. But (b) if yes UPnP is enabled, then it might not be working well and port forwarding is the way to go. Find Westell on far right column here PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall
* The very first step & most important is setting up at static ip when port forwarding. PortForward.com - Setting up a Static ip

arrrrgggg

i think i have tried what i can.
i have never used LW on my new pc, so i am not sure that i have an issue with "old LW pref folders" would i?
i am letting LW in on the only firewall setting i can find.
and i cant firgue out how to log into my westell modem to change any UpUn?setting.
im sorry if this is a basic problem to you guys, but we all had to learn to walk before we could run. so thank you for your patients.

birdy November 15th, 2007 08:05 PM

Have a look at this link.
Port Forwarding for the Westell Versalink 327W

Those instructions are for port forwarding your Westell...they also show you how to log into it;)

I found this info on an X-Box forum, it's for enabling UPnP on your model.
Quote:

Configuring UPNP on the VersaLink
To enable UPNP on the Gateway perform the following steps:
1) Select Service Configuration from the Configuration screen
2) Click the UPNP Enable box (a check mark will appear in the box).
3) Follow the instructions in the pop-up screens.
4) Click OK to Reset the Gateway.
If this is the only time that you've used LW then you won't have the old preferences folder. Did you go & delete the prefs folder that you do have?
You'll know if you deleted it properly - when you start LW it will take you through the setup wizard again (same as when you first installed LW).

polotodd November 16th, 2007 12:12 PM

many thanks for your help.
when i go to put my ip address into the address bar i get a internet explorer cant find that web page, i tried the number given whih was said to be the default, and i also looked up on my pc and it said it was a different ip #, i tried them both and neither worked. i remeber a few years ago, you could just down load the software and it would just work so easy.

polotodd November 16th, 2007 12:15 PM

yup you were right, i did delete the LW folders, and then when i went to run it again, it had me reistall it. i have just been tring to turn over ever rock to get this to work.
about the firewall issue, my pc came with a trial macafee on it, but i deleted it,and it isnt listed on my list of programs, but it is still on my firewall screen, there isnt a way for me to change it either. could that be an issue?

birdy November 16th, 2007 05:57 PM

Try using your computer's search to look for all files & folders with mcafee in the name & delete what you find.

Check your router's manual...just see whether there's a secondary IP address that you can use to log into the router. Don't know if it'll help, but you could try using a different browser to log into the router.

Edit: Try typing this into your browser's address bar

polotodd November 17th, 2007 08:54 AM

oh well, thanks for trying to help me to get LW to work, it seems i have tried just about everything to some degree. it seems like i have added this and change that preference to get it to work. and nothing seems to work. what a headache, why cant it just be loaded and have it work like it used too.
again thanks to all that tried to help,
i'm out of here.
i feel like i am chasing a bone tied to a string,
i cant waste more time trying to get it to work,
why cant it just be loaded and work like it used too.
again thanks for all the help.
