All of a sudden my firewall won't disengage

Greetings!
I have had LW for about 3 yrs. now and this is a first for me. My system is detecting my firewall and it shows on the globe at bottom of the screen as being engaged. NOTHING has changed on my computer, this just started two days ago! What's up?

Have you been through your software firewall & double checked everything?
How do you have your router set up (are you using UPnP or port forwarding)?
Check the listening port, make sure it's still the same as it's always been. Mine's a bit demented & the port number changes sometimes, which throws out the firewall settings & port forwarding;)

This happened to me too. Nothing seems to work i even tried to force ISP and it didn't help either. This happened to a lot of people at the same time it seems hm....

Have you been through & double checked your firewall settings?
Firewall setup

Are you port forwarding? If so, try going through all the port forward setup once again. What version of LW are you using, must be pretty old if it has 'force IP';)

Go through all the info here, see if anything helps

i've got the newest versio 4.12.3 or something.
If the port changes, do i have to change the settings as well?

birdy July 9th, 2006 06:30 PM

Your listening port number has to be the same as the port number that you've allowed through your software firewall. If you're port forwarding, the port number that you've forwarded has to be this same number too.

i still get a message that says i don't have an active internet or a firewall is blocking LW from connecting. I only have windows firewall and it has it on its exeptions list and in the advanced section. ports are all the same. It just started doing this when I logged in about a week ago.

What's your connection like - do you have any green bars at all?
Do this test & see if it works
http://www3.limewire.com:6346

What are your details (sorry for any repeat questions!)

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

Have you tried using any other p2p apps & if so, do you have the same problems?

Crazynut989 July 9th, 2006 07:10 PM

Windows XP
LW 4.12.3
Java
Linksys router (ethernet cable connected)
WOW internet and Cable
Connect from home
not sure what my ISP is
Router hooks up to 2 computers (mine and my family's)
Used LW for about a month
never tried P2P (not sure what that is)

birdy July 9th, 2006 07:26 PM

P2p is peer-to-peer, file sharing apps like LW, BearShare, Morpheus etc etc

Did the port test work?
Do you have any green connection bars at all?
Your ISP = internet service provider. Who do you pay for your internet service?
What's the model of your LInksys?

Crazynut989 July 10th, 2006 08:39 AM

My ISP is Wide Open West
haven't tried P2P
My router is a linksys wireless g 2.4
i get the tiny green bar when connecting
the port test did work

Firewall frenzy!

Well guys, I've tried checking all my ports and access points, etc., etc, and no luck. This just started out of the blue three days ago with no provacation. Since my computer savvy only goes so far (and that isn't far at all!) I'm at a loss.

birdy July 10th, 2006 07:06 PM

Are you fully connected (how many green bars)? Can you use LW as usual, apart from seeing the firewall or isn't anything working?
If you're not connected, do this test

it still won't connect :( i get the little green block saying it's connecting so i can't get any search results.

zdevon July 11th, 2006 06:37 PM

Firewall frenzy!

All of the bars are turbocharged blue. If I search for something I can download it but I can't seem to get any of the things that have stopped mid-download to restart. Also, where I used to get MANY people who were downloading from my site, I now get very few.

Dell 4600 P4 3.6 GHz
Win XP 2000 Home
1024 MR DDR SDRam@333 MHz
258 memory
cable connection

zdevon,
Clear the inactive downloads from the download window, go to your Incomplete folder, highlight the file & click Resume (don't do this for too many downloads at once). If there are sources online, with free upload slots, sharing that file, your download should resume. Sometimes though, it's just easier to search again.

If you're not seeing many uploads, means that not many users can push through your firewall. You are still firewalled??
Try & answer the rest of my questions in my last post;)

birdy July 11th, 2006 09:40 PM

Crazynut989,
Is there a specific model on your router (eg WRT54G)?? How did you have it set up when things were working - did you have UPnP enabled or were you port forwarding? I think some Linksys models have more success with port forwarding. Is the other computer using LW & if so, do you see the same problem?

Crazynut989 July 12th, 2006 08:20 AM

everything is set the same way it was when LW was working. It just randomly stopped connecting. First it took 3 hrs to connect at all and now it just doesn't connect. My other computer doesn't use limewire .

zdevon July 14th, 2006 07:38 PM

fRANTIC fIREWALL FRENZY!

I've tried all the advice I've been given and STILL I have my firewall up! I'm getting no downloads at all and only about 5 uploads. I've reached a point where I don't even want to deal with LW any more. Does anyone have any SOLUTIONS??? I'm tired of suggestions.
Sorry for the outburst, but it is very frustrating not being able to use LW as it is intended. ANY help is appreciated.

birdy July 14th, 2006 08:26 PM

Can I ask you again??

OS You said "Win XP 2000 home"... do you mean Win XP or Win 2000?
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc) We know it's cable
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW We know it's not

Connection problems are trial & error... what works for some people doesn't always work for others! There's not one simple solution;) All that people can really do is suggest fixes to try!

Do you still have a turbocharged connection? As I asked you before, how do you have your router set up... are you using it with UPnP enabled, port forwarding or neither of these?

Have you read this sticky? It addresses firewall problems. Have you double checked that your software firewall's configured properly? You'll find info about internal firewalls within modems & routers also.
