Didn't have connection problem before - but Now i do!, Why?

problem

after using kazza-lite successfully for over a year, i un-installed it to try-out the limewire p2p prog, but...

after i installed it ok with no errors an loaded it up, it find it just hangs there 'searching' endlessly after i ask it to find some mp3 files,
while elsewhere it just says 'connecting' forever, an dont connect!
so i re-installed kazaa an now it gives me this same prob !

so as there must be networking problem here - how do i fix it?

+ FYI...
1. OS version = Windows 98
2. i shutdown my ZA firewall before i loadup LW
3. 128mb ram
4. 5gb Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type : dialup
6. Modem = intel-536ep v92 pci, no router
7. connect from home
8. version of Limewire = 1.6b & Java = 1.3
9. isp = NTL
10. no sharing connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs
11. Its my 1st try at LW
12. dont see a brick wall in front of the bottom-left globe
13. the page of http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ did say 'Your test worked!'
14. my kazzaa-lite worked fine a month ago.

PLEASE HELP :(

My first advice would be to uninstall both Java versions (1.6 is the beta and 1.3 pretty old -both might not be suitable for your computer size.
Try to download the JRE offline installer of the newest Java version usable for your system:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Uninstall LW and Kaaza, after removing the Java, then reinstall the Java using the offline installer, reboot, then reinstall either LW or Kaaza (not both).

See if that does the trick.......

kaaza was already removed.
i dont have an offline installer for java as it was bundled with the main prog.
besides i dont see how a re-installation will change things.

still, i'm so dam desperate here i'll have to try your advice anyway!!!:o

Well, if you're so desperate to find a solution but on the other hand question suggestion made by people who deal on a daily basis with such problems, then I'm not surprised that the problem continous.

Sometimes that Java installation gets from some reason corrupted. The link I've included for Java is the place where you can download the offline installer.

Since both programs have problems, it is to assume that the problem is connected to something on your system. By ruling out possible causes, we will be able to narrow the search for the problem.

However, I stand to my advice given in my first post and reckon you trying all the suggestions made there. Another option would be to search this forum for similar problems to see what other Mods. have advised. You will see that they make/ made the same suggestions.

well if the java installation was corrupted, then me un-installing it, then re-installing it, should fix it - BUT it didnt :(

an yes i believe it is to do with my systems setup, which is why i ask what changes i need make to it, with say regedit if need be, or whatever prog...

i cant say as the p2p progs i use dont display the networks they use, just the search results.

but i have found...:)

that since ive been using the 'soulseek' p2p, it gives much more results than all its rivals ive noted.

however it does block webpages from loading when tiscali's accelarator is active :(

So, the fix is to dump Limewire? Is this what I'm seeing?

I'm having a similar problem. I used to be able to connect just fine, and now I can't. Nobody seems to know how to fix it.
