From Bad To Worse! What started as a firewall problem has escalated to a connection problem. I have LW Pro, but now I can only get green bars instead of blue turbo bars in the connection window. I have been a loyal customer of LW, buying my upgrades when they weren't provided gratis but now I have about had it with their support system and am on the verge of junking the program in favor of MP3 Extreme or some other program. I really do not want to do that. Iwould prefer some reliable input on SOLVING my dilemma. PLEASE HELP! |
Once again, here we go. My internet provider is roadrunner, and they have never in the past interfered with the perfomance of my LW connection. This problem JUST started about a week ago. Dell 4600 P4 3.06 GHz Win. XP 2000 Home 1024 MR DDR SDRAM @ 333MHz 258 Memory Firewall is config. for LW Roadrunner is a cable connection That's all the info I have. If you require any more I am in serious trouble...lol. |
I am wondering if LimeWire is actually having the problem with so many people having problems all of a sudden. |
No LimeWire is not having a problem It still works the same as it always has for most of us remember there are around 3 million users so relatively the number of people having problems is low. |
Zdevon Although I am not familiar with your problem the one thing I do know is that more and more ISPs are using bandwidth shaping techniques to curb, if not kill, P2P traffic. Usually, they do not tell you when and if they plan to curb P2P traffic, they just do it. And in most cases they don't even tell their help desk they have introduced P2P shaping/killing techniques. So, rather than blame LW for your woes give a quick call to your ISP and find out for sure. UK Bob PS. If you check around this forum you will find others who have suddenly become victims of their ISPs secret (and not so secret) anti-P2P policy. |
I called my ISP and they emphatically denied the use of P2P blocking or shaping. Meanwhile, the problem continues. I need some serious help here! My main problem lies in the fact that I don't have a whole lot of computer savvy. I HAVE to rely on the assistance of those who are in the know. So if you do indeed "grok" computerese, please help. |
Have you made any other changes to your computer just prior to LimeWire quiting. Different Antivirus or spyware protection. Did you reset windows firewall or anything like that. Check your firewall and set up a new connection in it for LimeWire. |
I already reconfigured my firewall, just in case. It's set up to allow LW. I think LW has been paid off by the music companies to start blocking select areas. |
LimeWire can not block any areas. What version are you using you may want to give the newest version a try if you are using an older version. The newest version is 4.12.4 |
My problem started when I downloaded 4.12.4. Now, everyone has questions but NO ONE has a solution. I've noticed quite a few others who share the same problem with their firewall. Coinsidence? I think not! If it's not intentional then it's ineptitude. So, which is it? |
On whos part? It works fine for me and thousands of others. |
Since all I did was download the program already created, you decide. Regardless, the problem exists and won't go away by its self. I've checked and rechecked my firewall settings, called my ISP to see if they are blocking P2P, checked my priorities. What did I miss? The longer this goes on the more frustrated I become. |
Hi zdevon, You've contacted your ISP & seem to be fairly confident that they're not causing you a problem. So the firewall issue must be coming from within your setup... logically it's either a software firewall or an internal firewall within a modem or router. I asked you twice in your earlier thread to give your system details but you didn't answer all of my questions! http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=58333 Hobo asked you again in this thread to answer all previous questions & still you didn't! How on earth can anybody help you if you don't give information? If LW is detecting a firewall from within your modem or router, you will have to tell us what brand & model you have. There is no crystal ball. Are you using just the XP firewall or something else (like ZoneAlarm or Norton)? Are we supposed to guess? If you're getting all green connection bars, just not 'turbo', I would worry about that later. At least you have a reasonable connection... concentrate on getting the firewall off for now. |
Birdy, In my SECOND reply in this thread I gave all the particulars of my operating system, at least all I know. I may not have mentioned that I am using Symantic (Norton) security which I have configured to accommodate LW (then reconfigured just to be sure). To make things even MORE interesting, now LW won't maintain a connection. This started today! Let me know if you require any other info. I'm not sure if I have the technical savvy to have the answer, but I will try. Dell 4600 P4 3.06 GHz w/HT Win. XP 2000 Home 1024 MR DDR SDRAM@333 MHz 258 Ram Roadrunner modem, model DCM 245 Hope this will suffice. |
Birdy, I did answer your questions as to my system specs. Was there something I missed? If so let me know so I can give you the information you require. LIke I mentioned, this problem started when I downloaded the latest version of LW. Up till then everything was absolutely great. So, let me know whay else you need, if you would. |
Do you have the XP firewall disabled? XP's firewall will conflict with Norton's firewall & so it should be disabled. I can't find any info about your modem having an internal firewall but most do. I think your modem supports UPnP, have you enabled it & chosen that option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config? If not, try it & see. Do you have a router as well? If you do, we'll need to know the brand & model. Like I said before, can't find any info about an internal firewall within your modem or any info about port forwarding for the device. Have a look in your manual & see if you can find anything out. |
Birdy, I have my xp firewall turned off and my norton firewall configured to accommodate LW. As far as my modem goes, your guess is as good as mine. It's my cable company's property. I don't have a manuel for it. If I were to delete the latest version of LW and reinstall my 4.10.3 v. , would i recover all my downloads? I'm getting pretty fed up with this new version. |
Providing your saved folder is still in a safe place (the default location is C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Shared). They're safe anyway, just as long as you haven't moved them to some strange location where they might be deleted if you uninstall your current version (some people have put their saved folder in weird places)! I've gone back to old versions before & never had any trouble. |
Files awaiting download Birdy, If I change back to a former version of LW I'm more concerned about losing the files awaiting download. I have already depleated the shared files in my computer. I only have about five files left there. Do you know if I will lose the files awaiting download or will I be able to retreive them? And if I haven't thanked you for your help before now forgive me and accept my thanks at this time. I truly do appreciate your help. |
If you back up the .bak & .dat files (you'll need to back up both, save them in a safe place) in your incomplete folder, you should be able to copy them into the new incomplete folder (when you revert back to the old version)... that should let your incomplete downloads resume from where they left off. I haven't had to do this myself but from what I've read... if you lose the .dat & .bak files then your download will have to start from 0% again:( |
SAving .bak & .dat files Birdy, ??????????????. I am soooo lost now! JUST WHAT EXACTLY IS A .BAK & .DAT FILE? And how do you back them up? I think I may have mentioned this before, I am not a computer whiz. More like a computer fizz...lol. If you know how to complete this operation I would appreciate the input. If not, maybe you can direct me to some one who knows. |
It might be easier for you to just copy the whole incomplete folder to a safe location & when you've installed the older version of LW, replace it's incomplete folder with the copy you've made. Maybe you should send a PM to Lord of the Rings as he's the expert. Using the forum search to look for older threads about this might help you to find some answers, too. |
One big advantage of LW 4.12 is that if you need to resume files from the incomplete folder, they will resume from the % where they were. This was not true for earlier versions, & if downgrading in versions this has always been the case of LW not recognising the newer downlds. But that also depends upon how back in versions you downgrade to. ;) |
I just disabled my entire firewall system and I still am getting a firewall notice on LW. How can that be possible? I seriously need some help here. Not just suggestions but solutions! |
So Much For The So-Called LW Gurus' What! Did I hurt someone's feelings? Well, I guess it doesn't matter now anyway. At the end of the month I will be eliminating LW from my system. I figure if I want to waste my money I'll invest in computer games. At least they work the way their supposed to! If I would have gotten some USEFUL help from the (ahem) technicians, I might have a whole different opinion of LW. As it is, I wouldn't buy another LW product if it was 90% off. |

Did you try deleting your LW preferences folder? This is often the 1st thing to try when things go awry. Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) Also try step 5. If you have SP2 you "might" be interested in seeing this http://www.lvllord.de/ Just to check, you might try FrostWire or Phex to see if you have the same problems. |
