Cant Connect with new LW

I recently upgraded to 4.12.3, and it seems to not let me connect. At first opening it it tells me "Limewire was unable to set up a port to listen for incoming connections. Some features of limewire may not work as expected"

More like limewire wont work at all. I had no problems with the older version and when i upgraded that happened and i cant connect at all. So i uninstalled and got the older version back but that still happens now I can't connect through any. I went through the connection guide on the site but that didnt help. Its not any of the usual firewall etc. problems because it worked fine before I upgraded.

I have basic btw.

Any help?

Read through this sticky, it has heaps of connection & firewall info
Connection problems? Check here first!

Do you see the firewall icon? Go back through your software firewall anyway, just double check that everything's set up properly. How did you have your router set up for the old version... do you have UPnP enabled or were you port forwarding?

Do this port test & see what happens
http://www3.limewire.com:6346

If the info within that sticky's no help, post back with your details (excuse any repeat questions!)

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

:)

aceot July 23rd, 2006 07:40 PM

Yes i followed it all. The test works, I port forwarded and all of that. Still same port error and I still can't connect. Double checked the firewall. I had it on UPnP then I port forwarded. Changed back to UPnP as i'm sure. Im not running under a router. Can't figure out why this is happening. Though the only thing I installed lately is Windows Defender Beta. I'm sure it's not that because it worked fine when it was installed. All this happened when i upgraded.

AaronWalkhouse July 23rd, 2006 08:12 PM

Windows Defender is not good enough to actually use yet, which is why it is a beta.

If you have a Norton Firewall, a known bug will block upgraded programs. Delete
all rules for BearShare and let it relearn rules for the new version.

aceot July 23rd, 2006 09:15 PM

I just use xp Firewall.

aceot August 3rd, 2006 07:37 PM

I think I found a problem. Anyone know if Windows Firewall keeps running if you disable it?

Let me explain. I disabled the windows firewall and went onto LW to see if it would work. After about a hour of nothing working I notice that little icon. That says you are under a firewall. It says I am. So im confuzzled right now as why if I turn it off am I still under it? So I go to security Center and click firewall and lo and behold it says Panda 2006 Personal Firewall is ON.
Now that is probably the problem. But another problem (yes a lot of problems :) ) is........ Its not installed on my computer. Windows reports it as a firewall but I cant seem to find it to disable it. Anyone know how to kill a firewall you dont have? Or is it still lurking somewhere in my PC?

Btw. It was a trial version of Panda and their uninstaller sucks big time. So I had to get tech support and they gave me a file that uninstalled it. But I still have to Firewall Showing up.

AaronWalkhouse August 3rd, 2006 07:46 PM

Oho! Grab a copy of [HijackThis], use it to scan your system and create a
report, post that report here and we'll show you which parts of that firewall to kill.

Well I see 2 things named Panda that you should probably kill. But waite for Arron to tell you what to do before you do anything. He may advise you to run ewido also it appears to me you may have some spyware running there also.

Put checkmarks on those and let HJT fix them, then remove the Limewire rules
from the Windows firewall and create new ones.

AaronWalkhouse August 3rd, 2006 09:34 PM

Take over, somebody. I'm in the middle of moving and will be going offline for a while.

aceot August 3rd, 2006 09:58 PM

Well i've fixed the problems. Though it still reports that Panda Firewall is still there. And i've disabled windows firewall, and LW still reports a firewall. I'm not running under a router. Maybe its the ISP? (Verizon) I still can't connect though.

[EDIT] I decided to scan again and those same problems are there again. Fixing them doesent seem to help.

Grandpa August 4th, 2006 08:06 AM

In that case go to Norbie's world and post a log there. I do not know enough about it and Aaron will be offline for a while. You can get to Norbie's world by clicking on the blue Icon by my Sig at the bottom of this post.

rushfan August 5th, 2006 06:45 PM

I upgraded to 4.12 and have tried everything but to no avail. I have read every thread I could find and tried everything.....I have Win XP Pro and am using that firewall. My old version of LW worked but now I have nothing....I have tried to give it plenty of time and that doesnt seem to work either. Help??

birdy August 5th, 2006 07:16 PM

You need to give a bit more info here!
Tell us what fixes you've tried that didn't work.

Did you double check your Win firewall configuration? How did you have your router set up when LW was working... did you have UPnP enabled or were you port forwarding? Have you gone back through your router config again & double checked things? Do you see the firewall icon? Does the port test work? Do you have any green connection bars at all? Are you getting any error messages?

What are your details (as per post #2)?

rushfan August 6th, 2006 10:36 AM

still not working

OK....I tried to disable my XP firewall and I also tried the directions for allowing exceptions and putting the right port # for TCP and UDP connections. My router settings have never changed...it is the Actiontec 1524SU and my ISP is Qwest....as far as I can tell Qwest is not blocking anything at all. I do see the firewall icon and it doesn't go away after I disable XP firewall. I am running AVG Free but no firewall. The port test does not work so I put in port 6346 and that didn't work either. My other computer which is a laptop is runing side by side this system and running 4.12 no problems. I have tried to duplicate all of the settings I have on the laptop but still no luck connecting. I went through my actiontec setup and nothing is different. I get one green connection bar and it says connecting to LW but never gets there....no other error messages.

Thread Hijacked??

Anyway. Mine works now. It was all due to Panda's crappy prog's. Had to contact them directly to get rid of their firewall. That was the problem. Panda gets my Worst Uninstaller in the World Award. (As I needed 2 seperate uninstallers directly from panda). Now this makes me pissed that their crappy firewall blocked most of my most used programs (ie. games, lw,) For over 5 months.. >.<

What does "Thread Hijacked??" mean?
