The default gnutella port is 6346. However, you can usually also safely use ports between the range of 49152 - 65535. 64049 seems to work well for those who have their ISP blocking or shaping bandwidth on the 6346 port. For port forwarding, it's recommended you use the same port for both connecting & listening. However this is not mandatory. UDP & TCP can also be port forwarded separately which is recommended by some people.

jay173 September 14th, 2006 12:03 PM

my listening port is 3045 and limewire set it to that when i installed it

Lord of the Rings September 14th, 2006 01:38 PM

That's when it's running in UPnP mode. UPnP mode listening port can potentially vary from time to time. But if your device doesn't support UPnP & has internal NAT firewall then the listening port will be on mostly deaf ears. :D

NeilJ September 14th, 2006 02:58 PM

Hey Lord of the Rings. I have been having some trouble connecting and could not see the test page so i assume this is due to the 6346 port being blocked by my ISP (at first i thought it was my firewall but i switched it off and also tried the firewall setup instructions on the faq but to no avail)

Could you talk me through how to get around this 6346 port issue. I don't really know where to go to change the settings so you may have to be specific.

Thanks in advance.

1st can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
4. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? This "is" important to know! ;)
5. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
6. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
7. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
8. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

6346 port issue::: you can use anything from 6346 to 6348 and a higher listening port like in 10000-64000 range

NeilJ September 15th, 2006 03:44 PM

could you tell me how i set up the ports? Where do I have to change things. In limewire itself or is it a connection setting? sorry i am a bit thick with this stuff :-(

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 03:57 PM

I've heard of others both having problem with Clearwire Broadband & also with NextNet devices used elsewhere. AFAIK all or almost all wireless devices have internal NAT firewalls.

jay173's advice is good. Go for a very high port. 49152 - 65535 are usually the best if there's any doubt about ISP blocking of ports. A good one to try is port 64049. ie: go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port. If still no good, then try changing the connection port also.

If you speak spanish then see http://forum.emule-project.net/lofiv...p/t109149.html
If you don't speak spanish, then see a note in english near the bottom of that link page. This was all I could find when I googled your device model number.

BTW jay173, that port 3045 is officially dedicated to ResponseNet. See http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers & also http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=24523

It really depends upon how an ISP is blocking p2p. They use many techniques. It may include blocking of ports, it may include special programs that detect p2p programs & stop them in their tracks, or they may dedicate them to a lower priority bandwidth whereby they get slower speeds; aka bandwidth shaping. Proxies may 'sometimes' prove successful in cases where an isp is blocking.

NeilJ September 15th, 2006 04:09 PM

I am not too hot at spanish. Could someone step me through how and where i have to change these port settings? I really am not too sure what i am doing...

birdy September 15th, 2006 04:10 PM

Hi NeilJ,
Like LOTR said, people have problems with Clearwire:( Here's some info I found for somebody else, have a read. It's a pretty long thread!
http://www.irishisptest.com/forum/cl...broadband.html

(if you're going to change ports, you should also change the port number allowed through your XP firewall. All ports must be the same number!)

Lord of the Rings September 15th, 2006 04:14 PM

Follow birdy's advice! ;)

If you didn't see the quote in english then here it is:
We're Clearwire. We make it simple. My name is Brett.

As Yelfris has stated Clearwire is sort of protecting its self and its users. With that said we do not and will not support any P2P file usage. The reason for this is to we do not support illegal file sharing over our network. If you have any additional concerns or questions you can simply reply to this email, or contact us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by phone at 1-888-Clearwire. Thank you for using Clearwire and have a great day!

NeilJ September 15th, 2006 04:46 PM

okay....I know what to do to change the port number in my ms firewall. but where do i have to change ports within limewire itself?

So here is the situation now:

Limewire listening port: set to 64049
Router config. Manual port forwarding - set to 64049 (i also tried use UpNp)

Windows firewall:

Advanced settings for local area connection set to:

Gnutella service (check box selected)

internal and external ports both set to 64049 (for both protocols)

The only other thing, is that the IP stated in the limewire connection help doesnt seem to show up after i save. i.e. - "127.0.0.1"

It seems to default to the name of mhy laptop instead.

Any thoughts...or have we exhausted all options at this stage.

Thanks for evcerything so far....i would just love to get one over on my provider now.....

birdy September 15th, 2006 05:58 PM

Have a look at the 2 links in this post

Here's some extra explanations for setting up XP firewall (don't know if they'll be of help but worth looking at): (i) Settings for XP Firewall, & also (ii) Setting Up WinXP Pro FireWall

NeilJ

Well try alternatives & see if you have the same problem: 1. FrostWire, ___ 2. Phex (great program!!!), ___ 3. BearShare (earlier version!!!)

nevermind im using unassighned port 12169

jay173 September 16th, 2006 07:38 PM

I couldnt get limewire working either with just configering my ext port using port forwarding i had to open my int and ext port for limewire in upnp forwarding and chose tcp settings then click enable. I know its working because if i try diffrent listening port my limewire says theres firewall.

i am having soo many troubles. for one i cant deleted the LW perfences but i deleted the whole folder but i cant delete LW pro i duno if that matters though. once i clicked sumthin and my computer went crazii like 19 internet explore windows came up soo i had to restart the computer. soo is there any way possible you can hack into my computer and fix it. this one guy i knew use to make my computer faster that way.

. Delete the LW Preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed!) & found here: Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire OR
Windows 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents" (BUT make a note of all your LW settings 1st, b/c after you delete the LW prefs folder you'll need to reset them.) See sample images below in next post. This process applies to users of 4.9.x or earlier or those who have updated to a later version than 4.9.x & are deleting their LW preferences for the 1st time since updating.

3. * New name & location for preferences folder for LW 4.10 or later: For LW 4.10 or later: Delete the LW Preferences folder called limewire (whilst LW is closed!) found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\limewire

i did number 2 i think but number 3 i cant find out how to do that. :( sorry im soo slow with computers :bangh: i did the hidden thing though and change somthing to Windows NT too

birdy September 21st, 2006 10:53 PM

tiffanyyy,
Please keep your replies in one place, it's a headspin going from thread to thread with you & it's not going to help anybody with the same problem if they have half an answer here & half somewhere else;)
Maybe a mod could merge this with
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...459#post230459
:)

Did you update your Java?

To delete the prefs folder: Start by going (in Windows) tools > folder options > view > show hidden files & folders > apply > ok. That's to double check that you do have hidden files & folders showing, cos the prefs folder is hidden.

Now go start > my computer > local disk(C) > documents and settings > your name > application data. Once you're in there, you should see a folder called LimeWire. That's the one you have to delete.

TO NeilJ/ anyone else whos good with computers :) - Clearwire Broadband

HI there. I am currently with Clearwire as well. But can not do the port forwarding to download from Limewire (paid account) and UTorrent. The p2p companys say i have to set the router to port forwarding but when i contacted Clearwire about this they said;

"Peer to Peer (P2P) applications treat your computer as both
‘client’ and ‘server’ meaning any information you
download to your computer using a P2P application, is then available for
upload. Once you have installed the application your computer can act as a
server and information is continuously uploaded from it, through our network.
This is in direct contravention to the Clearwire terms of service.

Section 10 of your terms of service state that you may not use the service or
take any action that will result in excessive consumption or utilization of
Clearwire’s network resources. Such prohibited actions include but are
not limited to: using the service to host a web server, continuously uploading
or downloading streaming video or audio, or continuous FTP uploading or
downloading."

Which means in Laymans terms - No we wont let you!-

would you have any idea how i would do this anyway because it seems that you are able to do it. I have the exact same router as you and use a 2Mbs speed.

Thanks NeilJ-- or anyone else who can answer this.

mickjapa108 March 23rd, 2007 06:15 AM

Hi Sean.
When an ISP is making an effort to stop P2P traffic, these fixes usuly are just temporary.
You Have 3 options, Give up P2P, Chase your Tail, or Get another ISP.

This is my opinion, others may have a mirecall up there sleve, PLEASE
Peace.

Grandpa March 23rd, 2007 07:08 AM

Don't forget option #4 Blame your P2P program for not working properly. :laugh_2:

mickjapa108 March 23rd, 2007 07:38 AM

Hi Grandpa.
And option 5 blame L/W cos the program they paid $$$ for at scam.com wont
connect.

sean051283 March 23rd, 2007 08:03 AM

Don't think i like them options

LOL I'm not sure i really like them opitions 1-5 lol i have read on the internet that Clearwire are not that helpful in these areas of P2P and of course this is after i got them lol. the story of my life :D

If any of you guys can reccommend an Irish SP that doesn't need a Phone line it would be mych appreacitated. (not sure about that spelling) :P

Im living in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland and we dont have much of a choice appart from clearwire (that doesn't need a phone line)

We have rip off Eircon that say they can install a wireless Dish on the side of your house, but after a friend got this she found out it was a one way signal.... hum... that means you STILL need a phone line. now shes stuck in a 12 month contract paying for the internet signal AND the phone line.

Im hopeing not to make her mistake....or mine for that matter...again and putting it out there for Kind hearted people :xeri_ok1ani: to maybe help me with this area in finding the right SP for me.

Thanks a million guys for the quick responces.

Sean.
