Major PC Problems

I was having trouble connecting to Limewire,it kept disconnecting. I followed the instructions (http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml)
in order to connect to the network, part of it was to configure my Firewall to open a port for Gnutella. Even since I completed these instructions I had nothing but problems with my pc.

I lost my ip address a TCP/IP problem as a result of this . I cannot access the internet through my broadband connection. A popup message saying "limited or no connectivity" appears. Also my XP firewall is OFF and I cant access it to turn it back ON due to a problem with "ICP". I cant even establish a new connection. The "Networking" tab in Network Connection settings is GONE!
I have tried MS Dos commands but my ip address/subnet mask/gateway info dont show, when I retry this the Dos screen fills with thousands of letter "H"..??
I uninstalled the network card the used my restore cd roms but nothing happened so I created a restore point to undo the uninstall. I have ran McAfee, Spysweeper, NoAdware, Adaware and everything else in my pc protection arsenal but no related treats were detected.

I finally got command prompt up, the result as follows:

Host Name: your-ntjdlffqll
Primary Dns Suffix: (blank)
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State: Media disconnected
Description: 3com 3C910 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller(3CSOHO100B-TX Compatible)
Physical Address: 00-40-2B-7C-22-BE

I have tried everything that I am capable of doing and I am at a loss what to do!
Please, I appreciate any advice you have for me.

go to your control panel>network connections and right click on the local area connection icon and choose repair...see what that does

If your TCP/IP installation has become corrupt, and every internet related app has gone "south", then a complete reinstallation of windows is called for.

However, it may be possible to just delete and re-install TCP/IP but I have never heard of anyone just reinstalling TCP/IP in a modern windows setup.

Let me first clear up a little confusion on your part, you said:

This forum and it's volunteers have no financial stake in or any commercial connection with the LW Org. We help out here because we have (and in most causes like) the LW app. So go back to LW Org and ask them for a refund.

Secondly, from the description you have given your equipment I presume you have not tried to PORT FORWARD your router or realise that your router comes with a built in firewall.

OK, all that said, I suggest that you check the model number of your router then click on this link:

PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Find the instructions then configure your router accordingly.

Good Luck

I must have missed this post when it was originally made...unless the TCP/IP configuration in the OS has been deleted, the steps I outlined do work as I have done it before when my LAN card disappeared for some odd reason from the OS...and I'm pretty sure one can import the files for networking back into the OS from the install disc...but as you noted (and I agree because of the time one many times spends 'fixing' a problem) a reformat and a clean install is many times the 'best' fix!
