I use cable (well wireless)

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?

7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
I'm connecting from home

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.:
LW 4.12.6 and Java 1.5.0

9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?:
My ISP is Microsoft Internet Explorer

10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
The page won't connect

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
no i'm not

12. Is this a your 1st try at FW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
this is my first try with limewire (FW?)

P.S. in the sticky i read that if the test page for LW 6346 doesn't work there are ways around it in order to enjoy limewire. what are? what exact steps do i have to follow now?

Thanx a mill,
RLC:confused:

Your ISP is your internet service provider...the company that you pay for internet access.

No router, any modem? Any external devices? Are you connecting from an apartment complex?

RLC November 9th, 2006 03:46 PM

Your ISP is your internet service provider...the company that you pay for internet access.

I pay a company called TKS

No router, any modem? Any external devices? Are you connecting from an apartment complex?

Yes I have a modem and yes I am in an apt.

RLC November 9th, 2006 03:57 PM

TKS is a cable service located in Germany. If thats not the answer that you're looking for then how do I find out what is my ISP exactly. Also I have tried that website to see if the 6346 port is closed or open for my computer and it said "stealth." What is that? Okay so what do i o again to get LW to work?:bangh:

birdy November 9th, 2006 04:04 PM

What's the brand & model of your modem?

Yeah I found TKS info, so far it doesn't look like they have an anti-p2p policy.

RLC November 9th, 2006 04:23 PM

hey birdie i just went to the portfowarding website and found the info for motorola sb900. now what do i do? should i click on easy file sharing web server?

RLC November 9th, 2006 04:25 PM

or do i click on limewire?

RLC November 9th, 2006 04:38 PM

u know what i just finished reviewing the website and that seems like a lot of work. tell me that is not what i have to do. is that what i have to do???

by the way thnx for responding so quick to my messages.

RLC November 9th, 2006 05:01 PM

I just noticed this. There is a red brick in front of a blue globe (ball). When I put the mouse on there it says that LW has detected a firewall.

birdy November 9th, 2006 05:22 PM

At the port forwarding site, click on LimeWire in the programs list.

Providing your Norton firewall's configured properly, the firewall that LW's detecting is either coming from your modem or (not too sure about this but it may be a possibility) from some firewall associated with the apartment's internet setup. Have you tried using any other p2p apps? If so, could you connect?

If your port 6346 test doesn't work, means LW's default port is blocked. Try changing LW's listening port to something higher (say 64049). Tools > options > advanced > firewall config will bring you to the page. Change the listening port there. You'll also need to change port numbers allowed through your software firewall and any port numbers forwarded through a modem/router. All port numbers used must be the same;)

If you're going to set up port forwarding, make sure to set up a static IP address first or p/f won't work. You'll find a link for this within the port forwarding guide for your modem.

the_hashimo November 9th, 2006 06:08 PM

my limewire isn't connecting.
and i see that limewire has detected a firewall, so i tried my best to do what people have said to do to fix this problem.
like with the listening port numbers and stuff.
but i really dont know what i'm doing, and nothing's changed yet.

birdy November 9th, 2006 06:25 PM

the_hashimo,
Read the sticky below & make sure that you're only using 1 software firewall which is configured properly. If you're connecting through a modem/router, they usually have their own internal firewall...see the info about enabling UPnP & port forwarding.
Connection problems? Check here first!

If you're stuck, please give us your details. Post #2 of the sticky shows the info that we need.

the_hashimo November 9th, 2006 06:31 PM

1.my test worked
2.Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access? i dont understand how to do it. like i dont know how to open network connections.

the_hashimo November 9th, 2006 06:46 PM

the connection firewall thing tells me to:
3.Go to Start -> Control Panel
4.Open Network Connections
but i can't even find start on my limewire
=/

birdy November 9th, 2006 06:51 PM

That's Start on your computer;)

the_hashimo November 9th, 2006 06:53 PM

the_hashimo November 9th, 2006 07:12 PM

again, thanks for all the help!

birdy November 9th, 2006 09:15 PM

You might have to find out from your parents the make & model of your modem, they've probably got a manual around somewhere if there's no writing visible on the modem. Also the ISP.

You could try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's closed (check in task manager to see it's properly closed). See points 2 & 3 below. You're using a very old version, so unless you've also installed & used a newer version recently, your prefs folder should be in the location described in point 2.
Fixes for LimeWire

Have you thought of updating to a newer version? LW's up to 4.12.6 now. It's really up to you but sometimes people do have trouble with older versions. If you love your 4.9.33 & still have the installer, you could save it somewhere safe & that way you can revert to it later on if you like. Updating to a newer version will uninstall the old one, so unless you've saved your 4.9.33 installer, you'd lose that version if you updated.

You should really get a firewall. There are some good free ones around. It's a bit dangerous to be using the internet without some protection for your computer;) There are some free ones within the link below

and some more info about free security products within this thread

RLC November 10th, 2006 02:22 AM

No i cant use any other p2p systems (i.e. Morpheus), and the listening port that my limewire is set to is 35506:confused: . So what else do i need to set to this number? Also, under firewall options in limewire the section related to router info "uPnP is checked"

RLC November 10th, 2006 02:49 AM

is my firewalll configured properly????

i just noticed that in my firewall advanced settings the port stealthing option is checked. It says, "this options ensures that blocked and inactive ports do not respond to connection attempts." Should i uncheck this option????

birdy November 10th, 2006 03:14 AM

First off, I don't know the Norton firewall & I really don't understand much about port stealthing but I think you can leave it checked...you'll open whatever ports you need within your firewall anyway.
Someone else here probably knows more about this & can add to the thread if my advice isn't right in this instance:D

'Use UPnP' should be checked if you're using a modem/router with UPnP enabled. If you're going to try port forwarding, you'll have to check the 'Manual port forward' button & add the port number you've forwarded in the box.

When you've chosen a new listening port number, change it within the firewall config page, within your Norton firewall & also use this same number when port forwarding within your modem. Same number in the manual port forward box too.

RLC November 10th, 2006 08:30 AM

I decided not to setup portfowarding right now because Limewire says that in most cases it can work aroung firewalls, and Norton firewall is a pretty popular software. I do not have my Windows XP firewall on and under the Norton firewall options "use UPnP" is checked. As stated earlier I am using Motorola SBG900 modem, Could this be whats possibly blocking LW? And, is there any way LW (or some other source) can tell me exactly where the firewall is coming from? If so, where do I find this info to correct it?

RLC November 10th, 2006 08:33 AM

oh yea and i only have one green bar under network connection.

RLC November 10th, 2006 08:40 AM

I will follow any instructions given to help LW connect--even the portfowarding one providing it is absolutly neccessary. Because I read that if I had to restart my computer for some reason the new static IP address may be reset and then I would have to start all over again, Is that true?
I have like several different new questions on this thread. Sorry that they're not all in one message, but right after I send the message I'll think of a new point to make/ask. thanx a mill. RLC

RLC November 10th, 2006 09:10 AM

Do you think it willl help any if I download the international version of LW?

RLC November 10th, 2006 09:49 AM

I temperarily turned off my norton firewall and then rechecked limewire and the red brick wall was still blocking the blue globe, so what to do now?
